The Death of the Floppy May Be Overstated 0

The Death of the Floppy May Be Overstated

In the closet just over there I have two boxes of floppy disks, carefully organized and labeled. Some of it is stuff I may need again: data files, pictures from the early days of digital imaging, documents from previous jobs, old resumes, and the like. Others have stuff I probably won’t ever use again, like the 16-disk installation library and three service packs for OS2/Warp 2.0, but find myself reluctant to discard (maybe I’ll load it up on my test computer on a rainy day just to see how it performs on a P3). I would compare the boxes of floppies to old books and papers that I expect I might need sometime, but don’t actively use. The only time in the past two years I’ve used one of them about a year ago, when I dug out DOS 6.2 Disk One so I could boot to DOS...

Announcing the Summer of Podcasts II contest: June 1st through Aug 31st

For Immediate Release: Apr. 27, 2010: Podcast Madness – www.podcastmadness.com – has announced the 2nd Summer of Podcasts contest. A contest that brings podcasters and listeners together during the summer months, while giving away some great prizes. The Summer of Podcasts contest started in 2009. The idea was simple: to help listeners find new shows and help podcasters grow their audience. Last year the contest was run by 15 participants giving 21 prizes to 125 entrants. This year, Podcast Madness hopes to have more diverse shows and a broader reach. “I met some great people during last years contest and gained a few listeners to my shows.” Says Jeffrey Powers, organizer of Podcast Madness. “We had a great turnout and I hope to use this vehicle to really push all shows. And the best part is we are accepting all podcasts and videocasts from around the world.” Sponsors...

Clouds over the Cloud 0

Clouds over the Cloud

Settling on my house sale has turned into an ordeal that has consumed all my psychic energy, with delay following delay on the other end (it’s not the buyer–it’s the lender). It’s tentatively scheduled to be over tomorrow, but I’m still waiting for the fat lady to sing. In the meantime, I’ve been pretty worthless from the waiting. I noticed this item, though, in one of my favorite radio shows. Here’s the synopis: Written in 1986, the Stored Communications Act allows the government to obtain emails hosted on the internet more easily than they would those stored on your computer. Ryan Singel, blogger for wired.com, talks about how this law came to exist, and why it has advocacy groups and mail hosts like Google and Yahoo up-in-arms. Follow the link to listen to the segment. The transcript is not up yet, but it’s scheduled to be up later...

Power of Woot: How Woot Drove Traffic to Geekazine 1

Power of Woot: How Woot Drove Traffic to Geekazine

Geekazine has modest, but good traffic to the site. With the help of CES video and what the writers do in this space, I bring a good number to the board. But today, something happened that blew me away. Over 10x my normal traffic – and still going. All because of a Forum Post. So I got home at about 12:30 A.M. from a calm night. After an hour of preparing podcasts, I got up on Geekazine to check yesterday’s numbers. What was interesting was I hit my daily average for today only an hour and a half from Day’s start. I noticed the post was for a video we did at CES 2009 – the Hantech Tablo. It’s a device you connect to your laptop and turn into a touchscreen. I was happy I hit my numbers for the day and then went to bed. However, it...

Day 2: Don’t Have to Pull Anything Out of my Pockets – Ford SYNC 0

Day 2: Don’t Have to Pull Anything Out of my Pockets – Ford SYNC

So I walk to the car, press a button and open the door. I press the brake and push the start button – The car starts. Pretty cool. As long as I have that FAB, I feel like I don’t have to lock the car. Maybe I can get a car that looks like an orange Charger where I can weld the doors shut… So anyway, I’m driving down the road and I get a call from my brother. I answer the phone via the dash and have a good 5 min conversation with him. When were done, the music on the iPod kicks back in. The best part about this story? I didn’t have to take a thing out of my pocket. With my vehicle, if I wanted to do that, I had to take the phone out and plug it into the audio cable. I still...

Day 1 with Ford Taurus SHO: Ford SYNC System 0

Day 1 with Ford Taurus SHO: Ford SYNC System

A rainy Wednesday morning – I sit in anticipation like an expectant father. A knock at the door and the dogs start barking uncontrollably. They always want to meet who’s at the door – and so did I. For today was a special day; I was getting a new car… Well, at least for a week. Last month I was talking to the guys at Ford, looking to do an over-the-phone interview. However, they came back and said “Well, do you just want to drive the car around for a week?” That set me back a little. “Sure.” I replied. That is what set this whole thing in motion. The car arrived at the house about 10:45 A.M. A 2010 Grey Ford Taurus SHO with the built in SYNC system. Signed some paperwork and I was off to the races!  I was ready to take this vehicle wherever...

When SPARC is Gone: Bill Allen – HP Road Show Converged Infrastructure

We all hate the word. It means extra hours and that one thing that hangs up the project until someone goes “Wait, this is how it works” and everything just makes sense. Migration We are coming up to a point where even old software needs to move forward. Legacy is not the way to go in this day and age. Staying on Legacy equipment may mean you are going to pay even more when you don’t have a choice. Bill Allen talks about why it is important to get off the old Legacy and get on a system that will bring a Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) back to the company. Bill mentions the dedicated migration centers of HP, and their single source support for Linux, Solaris, Windows and HP-UX. Most important, you will be upgrading to machines that will do the job in a fraction of time...

Introducing Wikazine 0

Introducing Wikazine

A couple days ago I started working with some others who will be writing for Geekazine. Building the ranks, sort of speak. But as I was doing that, I realized there isn’t a great place for people to go and get more information about Geekazine, Dorkazine, Sportazine and even the Day in Tech History. The collaboration of DITH was the reason why I set up Wikazine. So people can help build Tech History events for the podcast. I also realized that the Wikazine can be used to bring together all of the web site properties. A Wikipedia for Podcasting. Hence, Wikazine is now part of the fold of websites.

Appeals Court Deals Setback to Net Neutrality 0

Appeals Court Deals Setback to Net Neutrality

MSNBC reports: A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that the Federal Communications Commission lacks the authority to require broadband providers to give equal treatment to all Internet traffic flowing over their networks. Note that it is an appeals court, not the Supreme Court, but I find it a bad omen. I believe that cable providers and other ISPs should be viewed as utilities who provide the pipes. They shouldn’t be able to restrict or shut off the pipes for content or content-providers they don’t like and open them for those they do want. I think that the issue for the ISPs is controlling access to entertainment media, and not to, say, websites like Geekazine. Comcast has a number of cable channels and entertainment companies under its control and is trying to add more. It has also been trying to convert its cable internet website into a portal. I...

One on One: Grant Jacobson – HP Road Show Converged Infrastructure 1

One on One: Grant Jacobson – HP Road Show Converged Infrastructure

Earlier today we got to learn about Flex Fabric using the Flex 10. Jeffrey Powers sits down with Grant and talks about how this great technology can help an IT infrastructure. Think of it this way: If you have an office in China and another on the East coast and West coast. China gets a bigger pipe during their office hours while the West coast would get reduced bandwidth. If the East coast gets slammed with work, the network admin can reorganize the pipe to reduce any bottleneck. Of course, don’t forget to collect the code during the presentation for a chance to win a HP Elitebook 2530p – a $1600 value! You can enter codes here, or at SDRNews.com

Grant Jacobson on Flex Fabric – HP Road Show Converged Infrastructure 1

Grant Jacobson on Flex Fabric – HP Road Show Converged Infrastructure

It sounds like something a tailor would be working on. Who knew that the tailor is HP. Flex Fabric brings demand for a more manageable infrastructure. That is where Grant Jacobson comes in – to talk about how to make a flexable network. Virtual connect: to make management easier and more predictable. That is what Grant begins showing us in this video. He discusses the problems with data centers and networking those together. With Policies, they can move connections with workloads. The most impressive part of this discussion is how the Flex 10 Virtual connect will make that happen. Devices that replace tons of cables into a manageable pipe that can be controlled via software. Reliability and Predictability. Two things you want in your network. Of course, don’t forget to collect the code during the presentation for a chance to win a HP Elitebook 2530p – a $1600 value! Google Tweaks Buzz Privacy 0

Google Tweaks Buzz Privacy

The BBC reports that Google is updating Google Buzz’s privacy settings in reaction to complaints that it revealed too much too soon. The story at the link contains a long discussion of the buzz over Buzz privacy (is that “buzz squared”?). If you Buzz, you might want to buzz over to Buzz and check your settings. The search giant will ask all its users to confirm or change their privacy settings, starting on 5 April. The firm was forced to make a series of changes to Buzz just days after launch, following a backlash from users worried about privacy intrusions. I don’t see a lot of indication that Buzz is the buzz of social networking. I’m not buzzing; heck, I can’t keep up with the stuff I need to keep up with, let alone with other stuff, and I see no benefits to me or mine in buzzing....

Baby Boomers… Why Numbers, Markets Keep Growing 0

Baby Boomers… Why Numbers, Markets Keep Growing

“You know, Norman, you really are the sweetest man in the world, but I’m the only one who knows it.” – Ethel – On Golden Pond (Universal Pictures, 1981) The Internet celebrated its 40th anniversary in September. It wasn’t such a big deal for the first 10 years until the PC got some traction. Our son can’t imagine how people survived in the “Dark Ages” without email, texting, cell phones, social sites, MP3, Tweets. He also can’t believe that some of the rock stars of that era are still going strong. Last September, Ringo Starr (The Beatles) was 69 Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones) was 68 Bruce (The Boss) Springsteen was 60 When he hears ages like that, Golden Pond’s Billy Ray and he agree…“Man, that’s really old.” Boy, that hurts! Wait a minute!! As eMarketer reported recently, boomers may be aging, but they don’t expect to get old. Add the Numbers...

Quickcast – Netflix Review, Ford Sync, Trip to San Fran

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThis month I took some time to check out Netflix and how they have changed since I last used them. I had Netflix back in 2002, where you would have to wait a whole week and a half for the next 3 movies in the queue. It was an upgrade when they put in a new distribution center closer to me, therefore movies only took a week. I moved over to Blockbuster simply because of convenience. That year I also switched banks because of convenience – More locations, more options. But this last year I closed that bank account and went back to my credit union. Online banking made it easy for me to get stuff done. So I figured, if I can do it with banking, I can do it with movie rentals. Sponsor:  14 Day Gold Membership & 1 FREE audio book...

Opera Mini 5 for Android G1 0

Opera Mini 5 for Android G1

Over the last two and a half weeks, I have packed up and cleaned out my old house and finished the move to Virginia Beach, Va., where spring is well under way. I’m ready to start paying attention to tech again. Yesterday, I was mucking about in the Android Marketplace and discovered that Opera Mini 5 Beta was available for download, so I downloaded it immediately. It is much better that Opera Mini 4 for Android, which I understand from the Opera newsgroups was as much a proof-of-concept version as anything else. The new version includes tabbed browsing (which Opera invented) adapted to a mobile device, improved bookmark and settings management as compared to v. 4, and better responsiveness to the touch screen.
