Sony Laptop Recall 0

Sony Laptop Recall

Sony Laptops once more have an overheating problem, according to a report in the Guardian; this time, it’s not hardware, but a software problem: The overheating is caused by a bug in the bios (basic input output system) software which provides the basic functionality for the machine, rather than the Windows operating system which runs on top of it. The bios is embedded in the chips of the machine, but can be upgraded. Sony says that people should either apply the update themselves, or take the affected machines to a Sony repair centre. Affected models sold outside Japan are the VPCCW25FG/B, VPCCW25FG/P and VPCCW25FG/W. Approximately three quarters of a million machines are thought to be affected. The BBC reports that, though no one has been harmed, the flaw can damage machines: Although there are no reports of any users suffering burns, Sony say it has received a number...

Rent 4G with Cheetah for Business Trips 0

Rent 4G with Cheetah for Business Trips

Of course, last week I was in Las Vegas. I was dreading the possibility that I had to do uploading / downloading from a hotel connection. Last year, I paid $14.95 a day for 512 down / 256 up on average. Not great if you need to push video for a major event. Terri from Ivy Worldwide turned me on to Cheetah – a local company that rented 4G cards using the Clear 4G network. Their website – 4G4rent – went through the steps – rent the service (pre-pay), they drop the card off at your hotel. Use the service, then when you check out, you leave the card at the front desk. Pretty simple. What was better, though, was the price. I purchased the service from Sunday to Friday and it only cost me $54.00. That was $9 a day. So how was the speed? Well look...

Day 3 Wrapup – HP Technology Forum

The sound was the culprit and it wasn’t fixable through filters like compressors or gates. Andy and I found a nice spot to go over the last day of the HP Tech Forum. In retrospect, we produced 11 interviews and a few coffee table discussions. We caught all the keynotes and had about 3-4 booth interviews. We also had a host of guests that helped out. Of course, the folks at HP and Ivy Worldwide. Then we had Kevin Houston from Blades Made Simple, John Obeto of AbsolutelyWindows, Stephen Fosket of Gestaltit, Frank Owen of Techvirtuoso and Jordan Spencer Cunningham of OSNews. It was a great week of learning and content creation. Now it’s time to mix down and put up on...

FTC and the Twitter Hacks 0

FTC and the Twitter Hacks

From Merriam-Webster, one of the oldest meanings of the word “hack,” dating from the early 1700s: 1 : working for hire especially with mediocre professional standards 2 : performed by, suited to, or characteristic of a hack It was not so much that Twitter was hacked. It seems, instead, that Twitter had hacks. The Guardian reports the FTC has reached settlement with Twitter over security breaches involving users’ data. No fines were assessed, but an outside auditor must review Twitter’s security practices for the next ten years and Twitter is enjoined from making false statements about its security practices for 20 years. (Personally, I think the bloom will be off the Tweet long before then.) Hackers (the geeky kind, that is) gained access to Twitter users’ data because of poor security practices by Twitter employees. The short version is that Twitter employees with various levels of administrative rights...
