Free Commander File Manager for Windows 0

Free Commander File Manager for Windows

I’ve been learning my way around Windows 7. So far, there’s not much to learn, but I’ve been chaffing under the “libraries” overlay in Windows Explorer. So I went looking for some new file managers. Back in the olden Windows 3.1 days, I had Windows File Manager configured to show two panes on startup. When Windows File Manager morphed into Windows Explorer, that was no longer an option. For a long time, I ran a commercial program called Power Desk, which was what Windows Explorer should have been and worth every penny I paid for it. I found two freeware file managers worthy of consideration. One of them is Free Commander; the other, File Organizer, will be the subject of a future post (there apparently is at least one other shareware/commercial program called File Organizer). Free Commander by default offers a split vertical view: Each pane can be...

Xirrus WiFi Array – Interop 2011

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS WiFi is getting more complex. We want to connect wirelessly anywhere, anytime. Only problem is if you are in a room full of people who want to do the same thing, it makes the connection a little tougher. That is where Xirrus comes in. They make WiFi access points only. In what look like little UFO’s, these discs can extend wireless to a conference or classroom. Jeffrey Powers talks with Brian Mason and Dariann Lucarelli on Xirrus and what it takes to connect a conference. Dragon Age 2 Review (Xbox 360) – GameBreak 1

Dragon Age 2 Review (Xbox 360) – GameBreak

Stepping off the heels of Dragon Age Origins would be a big challenge for anyone. I’m sure I’m not the only one that waited eagerly to see if Bioware could do what we all know they are capable of. So did it live  up to the hype? Am I eagerly waiting for any DLC that will come next? Or did this turn me off enough that I almost didn’t finish? Right away I noticed was how streamlined everything had become. Instead of having a list of races to choose from, you pick a male or female human with the last name Hawke. A friend of mine complained, saying this took away from a lot of the choices the game gave you. In replacement though, the main character now has voiced dialog. So I was alright with the trade. Dragon Age 2 picks up right after the attack on...

Where Has Frank Been?

My previous post has been my first post here in weeks. I have not abandoned Geekazine, but I am in a semi-hiatus. I have decided to study for some certifications and this has taken away, not the time to write posts, but the time to research for posts. And I don’t think many readers would be interesting in the finer points setting up LVGs in CentOS. But I shall be back from time-to-time.

Make a Motherboard with Comit Systems – Interop

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Computer motherboard, modem board, router or just a special prototype board that you want to build. When you have the basic design, check out COMIT Systems. They design and create your ideas in technology. It’s pretty cool, because I know my way around a motherboard, but I would guess that if I tried to build one it would not go over too well. Nonetheless, my idea for anything from video games to digital cameras and full computers can be accomplished by COMIT. They have a team that goes over your designs and creates the finished product. COMIT has been doing this for years and they even make commercial items you might have in your home. Things like six-generations of the U-Verse modems. Setting Up My New Lenovo ThinkCentre M90Z 0

Setting Up My New Lenovo ThinkCentre M90Z

I had been warned that FedEx was on the way. The package arrived yesterday. I waited until both of us were present to open it find a Lenovo ThinkCentre M90Z, from a benefactor (I don’t know whether he wants to be named–I will leave that to him). So I was up until much later than I am used to setting it up. I love setting up a new computer and I had been wondering for some time what strategy to adopt to learn Windows 7 without spending gobs of money, so this was double the fun. I took it up to my computer corner and dug out a hub and couple of cables, since the existing hub was full; the box has built-in wireless, but I prefer cables when I can use them. I moved the printer to another location to make room on the walnut desk I...

Canon VIXIA R30 0

Canon VIXIA HF R20 Video Camera Unbox, Review [Video]

For the last couple weeks I have been using a new video camera to capture all my video. Although my Kodak Playtouch is a great camera (which I still use), I needed something with an optical zoom. However, I couldn’t find the right camera with everything I needed (which included a mic-in jack that wasn’t going to ruin the sound). When I heard that Canon VIXIA was making a camera that had a lot of functionality I needed and more, I was excited. I mean, the mic-in jack – that is a pretty basic need for a camera, right? I also purchased the R20 over the higher end version because the main difference was internal memory – 32 GB over 8. Since it had dual SD card slots that could take up to 64 GB worth of video and also Eye-Fi ready, I wasn’t too concerned on paying...

Dan Lynch interviews Vinton Cerf – Founding Internet Father: Interop 2011

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIt’s always a treat when you get to hear from one of the people that helped create the technology  we use today. Vinton Cerf is one of those people. If it wasn’t for his efforts (along with Bob Kahn), we might not have the infrastructure that is around today. Another legend in his own right, Dan Lynch is the founder of Interop, and in his own words, “Retired Bum”. The two sat down to talk technology, history and more. Vinton talks about his time now at Google. He mentions how ambitious the kids there are. He concludes with “It is a good day for me if I can make two 26 year-olds tired”. The two also discuss ARPANET. Vinton gives Dan a segment of the original cable on a plaque. Dan quips back by mentioning that he gave Vinton the segment...

Four Bloggers Walking Vegas Strip – Interop 0

Four Bloggers Walking Vegas Strip – Interop

I have been to Vegas before, but never really did the “tourist” thing. Bob, Greg and especially Aaron (who has never been to Vegas) wanted to walk around and see the sights. We started by going from Four Seasons, to the tram and to the monorail to about mid-point in Caesar’s Palace. We then walked back to Mandalay Bay, while seeing all the great images the strip had to offer. It was a fun time and even I got to see stuff I haven’t before.

My Flight to Vegas: via GeoNova 0

My Flight to Vegas: via GeoNova

Last year I flew in my first plane that had this feature. It was a Geotracking system that let me see where I exactly was. No more guessing if I was over the Rockies, Mount Rushmore, or the Grand Canyon. No more being afraid that the plane is going the wrong direction… Well, maybe not the last part… On this Frontier plane, they had little TV’s that you can watch 25 satellite channels. One channel was called GeoNova. I could track where we were specifically. Not exactly handy when over Dubuque, IA, but cool when we are going over the Rockies. I could better gauge where I was so I knew if it was worth pulling out the laptop, or just sitting back and relaxing. The channel let me know the altitude and that we were flying at 460 mph. Pretty cool how technology has gotten us 25 on-air channels...
