Finding the Right Network Protection for Your SMB for 2014

Last week I had a friend go through a major problem with his company — a cyber-attack happened and they lost data. I remember when it happened to me years ago. We built a strong infrastructure, but one wrong move by a overactive employee set us back a few months as we had to rebuild some vital databases. When we talked about it, he thought they had the right protection. Looking into it deeper, they didn’t have any. It wasn’t a real surprise since this group is just starting out. It might even be a lucky move for them because the data loss could have been years worth of work. Around this time, I report on my Day in Tech History podcast how many hackers attack during the holiday season. Heck, we just saw Target go into a major issue with their credit card system getting hacked. Small or...

Geekazine 2013 in Review

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS I am still running a snails pace and several websites that have not been up regularly since December 6th. I have been told everything from my plugins causing problems to getting a DDOS. The reality is – the site went down the day it was transferred to a new server by GoDaddy. But the show must go on! Therefore, I am writing this in an alternate spot in hopes that I can post it today. After all, I wrote 3 posts yesterday and they were still finally all posted this morning. TWIGG was a slower pace since I was about ready to collapse. I still had to go shovel snow! Nonetheless, we talked about the new prescription Glass and how you can play Duck Hunt. Ford was Awesome! I got some great video on their new driver assist project and how...

Ford Fusion Hybrid Driver Assist Car Project

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSFord unveiled a new project to help make driving safer; a part of Ford’s Blueprint for Mobility project. The Ford Fusion Hybrid Driver Assist Car Project is not a driverless car but more of a pre-emptive option so everyone can stay safe. The Ford concept car is not going to be out on the road anytime soon and definitely will not have any weird-looking spinning cameras on the roof. When the technology is ready (10-20 years), the car will 3D model its surroundings so it can watch for any anomalies — a child running to get a ball, a deer coming out of the woods, or the car in front of the other that had to stop abruptly. The Ford driver assist will then spring into action by applying the brakes before you can. Ford partnered with the University of Michigan and...

96 Hours of Hell and Websites

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS It was a horrible 96 hours as last Friday, GoDaddy decided to move my websites from a retiring server to a new box. The problems started from there. Wikazine is completely down. Geekazine gets 500 and 503 errors. But I still want to get a show out to you guys. So this will be a shorter version of the podcast. Fitbug Orb – Activity Monitor: Track Your Steps, Sleep Patterns

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSFor the last couple weeks I have been wearing a Fitbug Orb – a device that tracks my steps and sleep patterns. I know a little more and have changed my activities for a more healthy lifestyle. We all know that 20 minutes of heart-raising activity, three times a week will make us healthier. We also know that 6-8 hours of good REM sleep will relieve stress and heart health. But do we know if we’re achieving those goals? A device such as the Fitbug Orb will help us understand these goals. We can then loose weight and live longer. The Orb is a disc that you can wear on your body – via watch strap, belt clip or just in your pocket. The orb communicates via iOS device and certain Android devices via bluetooth. Simply press the button to transfer...

Is an Amazon Drone Even Possible?

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Today’s the day I get my Google Nexus 5. I also got the new iPad Air from Black Friday, which I went over on iPad365. Our TPN crowdfund is still happening and really needs your help — get a T-shirt! Bought a FreedomPop Mifi puck last night on Cyber Monday deal. You can find out more and help me get free usage. Black Friday From Underwear? Better Than Doing it on Thursday!

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS The first snow of the season hit Madison Monday. I actually had to break the shovel out – and Google Glass. Manga Studio EX5, Wacom Intuos Manga Tablet: Computer to Graphics Station

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI was asked to check out the new version of Manga Studio EX5, but I couldn’t do much with only a mouse. Therefore, I got a Intuos Manga pen-tablet to work with it. The one-two punch helped me create some fun anime and other graphics. Manga Studio EX5 Get the Manga Studio EX 5 at Amazon I wish I had this computer drawing software back when I was drawing my comic “Cybeeks”. Manga Studio EX5 is a great way to create graphic novels, storyboards, logos and a whole bunch more. I haven’t drawn in a while, so I wasn’t going to make many masterpieces. Yet, I really didn’t need to. The software has multiple options and staged 3D characters for you to create a quick image the way you like it. You can also use the 3D models as tracing dummies around...

The Changing YouTube – Trolls Beware!

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS I am officially a Google Helpouts mentor. You can ask me questions not only about Podcasting, but also help with Wirecast. Last night’s TWIGG was awesome collection of news. We talked about XE11, surgeons on Glass and more. I have officially moved TWIGG to its own YouTube channel – you can now find at youtube.com/thisweekinglass . Was in Tucson last week for Techonomy13. Awesome sessions from many people. Tony Hsiesh was the most prolific, as he talked about moving the company into Vegas and the change from shoes to much more. TPN Crowdfund is still going. T-shirts are great stocking stuffers! 2014 Ford Mustang First Drive

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile I was in Tucson, AZ I got to drive the 2014 Ford Mustang V6. I was joined by Todd Cochrane where we both got to drive the car and give our points of view. The Mustang V6 is a 3.5 liter, 2 door coupe. While this is the introductory model Mustang, there are still 305 horses under the hood. Put the pedal to the floor and you can see how you can pass the slow cars easily. The 2014 Mustang V6 has an all leather interior and seats four. It has a good distance of wheelbase (107″ x 81″) so it handles really well. I even tested the vented four-wheel disc brakes on the road and it stopped like a champ. This drive also was recorded via Google Glass. This is the full recording from Glass. Other features include HID headlamps,...

The Satellite Has Changed: Interview with Peter Platzer – NanoSatisfi

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIf I was to ask you to draw a picture of a satellite, would you draw a big bulky device with solar wings? If I was to ask you how much a satellite costs, would you say billions of dollars? Now let me tell you that is all about to change… I got the opportunity to talk with Peter Platzer of NanoSatisfi.com. They are making satellites a little larger than the size of a Rubik cube. Hundreds of these satellites get launched into space and hover over earth without being seen by the naked eye. Best part – they will be able to cover the planet a lot easier than that billion dollar dish. These Satellites are already in space. They keep their orbit, transmitting data back and forth. When they die, the device simply falls back to earth and disintegrated...

Podcast Microphones: Audio Technica ATR2100 vs. ATR2500

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThe coolest thing about microphone technology is for under $100 you can get a decent microphone for video recording, podcasting or music. A lot of podcasters have been using the Audio-Technica ATR2100, which I reviewed here. But I just got the ATR2500 model and I am truely impressed with the sound it gives. Therefore, this video is a comparison of these two microphones. Audio-Technica ATR2100 This is a handheld dynamic microphone. The mic is meant to be used by musicians, comedians or anyone that needs to hold the microphone at times. It should be placed only a few inches from your mouth. This is a hybrid microphone – XLR to plug into a mixer and USB to plug straight into the computer. You can plug in both XLR and USB, then record from 2 sources. The ATR2100 has a range of...

Geekazine 6th Anniversary Episode: FAA Changes Rules: Keep Your Device On

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Six years ago, I started a website called Geekazine. It’s six years later and I am still going! Spoke at UW Platteville on Google Glass. Was an awesome time learning about the entrepreneur program there. Last nights TWIGG was phenomenal with Chris Pick and seeing Glass v.2. We tried to figure out the differences, but they must all be inside. iPad365 was nominated for a PodcastAward. Please go vote for the show! Did you see the Habitat for Humanity Ford F150 video? Habitat for Humanity with Ford F150

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI got to drive some Ford F-150 trucks across Detroit and do it for a cause. Habitat for Humanity builds and repairs houses for those who need a place to live. Being in Detroit, there are a lot of run down areas. We got to visit a couple of them while we were there. Boarded up windows, broken concrete and grass that hasn’t been mowed for a while. I was joined by Judie of Gear Diary as we took our Ford F-150 Lariat across Detroit to the 100th home build. Once there, we unloaded the wood, found out a little more about Habitat for Humanity, visited the location the house will be built and finally came back to Ford. It was a fun experience as we drove across the city. Wood was provided by Home Depot. Thanks to Judie for making the...

iStopMotion by Boinx – Create Stop Motion Videos

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSStop motion is an art that some excel in. Claymation and LEGO motion are both types of Stop motion video. Movies like Wallace and Grommet and Chicken Run use this technique. Now you can, too! A couple weeks ago, Boinx software sent me the iStopMotion software to play with on my Mac and iPad. I am not a stop motion expert by any means, but this software made is easy to create my own videos and animated GIFs. Advantages of iStopMotion The ghost images show you where your items were so adjustments can be made. You can load an audio track so the stop motion can sync with it. You can even load in a video to create a stop motion version. Imagine re-creating Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer with this software! You can also put up a chromakey background to put your...

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS I got my 5th pair of Google Glass last week, but they didn’t come from San Francisco. I talk about it all on TWIGG as Luke shows off the Texas state fair. Got a Fitbug Orb in the mail, so I’ll be testing out my health for the next couple weeks. Netflix courts Cable. Roku, Apple TV Should do the Same?

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Monday was a long but productive day. At Midnight, we launched the TPN at CES crowdfund – a crowdfund project for our trip out to CES. I talk about why we need it. Last night on TWIGG.TV we talked with Kathi Browne about Google Glass and Healthcare. It was a great hour worth of content about what the medical profession is planning for Glass. I’m also in the hunt for a new computer. Its time to get a newer processor so video can be processed faster. Twitter’s IPO: Is it Facebook IPO all Over Again? Geek Smack! 6th Anniversary Episode

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS 6th anniversary of the podcast is upon us! I started this show back in 2007 – named “The Show”. Fourth pair of Google Glass is going back to Google. This time, the camera died. I talk about it on TWIGG. My EmpireAvenue account is at 112 but more interesting is the numbers watching and listening increased. Crowdfund for CES is looking great – we’re planning T-shirts for backer levels. Getting closer to launching the new website to bring more validation to podcasts. I’ve been trying out StreetJelly in the last week – a website where you can listen to musicians playing live. You can even tip them tokens. I spent about 10 hours over the weekend working on my acoustic show once again. Hotline – 608-205-4378 – geekazine (at) gmail.com Download the audio version Subscribe to the podcast via: iTunes –...

Why Apple, Google Bested Coca-Cola as Top Global Brand

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Was proud of iPad365 – not only on “New and Noteworthy”, but also on “What’s Hot” in Technology. I broke down and joined Empire Avenue. My stock jumped to $58.51 in the first two days. Does that mean I’m rich?  Spent the weekend relaxing – on Sunday we did Tandem Kayaking on Lake Monona. Not an easy task at times. Last night’s TWIGG we talked on XE10 and the upcoming GDK for Google Glass. I also tried Google Hangouts with Q&A. While I liked how it worked, in the end the quality wasn’t there. Not sure if the problem wasn’t as much Google as it was my Macbook Pro. I really need to find a way to upgrade my computer so that doesn’t happen again. CES planning is underway. This year – we’re doing a Crowdfund! Expect it to start Oct...

HDMI 2.0: What You Need to Know

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Laid back week this week. Finally tested out my Google Glass with the band – the packing tape over the power button seems to be working! We’ll see what happens over the next couple weeks, although its getting colder here (a actually had to pull out a jacket today!) Last nights’ TWIGG was an awesome show – next week we will be bringing on a guest and talk about Glass in healthcare. Day in Tech History’s 1,500th episode went out today. 365 episodes a day since Aug 10, 2009. Also continued to be attacked by brute force attackers. Had to increase security. Epson Expression Home XP410 All-in-One Printer

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThis week I take a look at the Epson Expression home XP 410 printer. This is a smaller All-in-on printer that doesn’t need to connect to a computer to be set up or printed to. In fact, you don’t even need to be at home to print pictures to this printer. I personally use Epson printers at home. The Artisan 810 has been my main printer for the last couple years. The XP410 is meant to be a smaller printer – so no paper tray, no duplexer and no sheet feeder. What it does do – it prints. The XP410 is a 4-color printer (CYM-B). Epson uses DURABrite Ultra pigment ink, so pictures are smudge, fade and water resistant on glossy paper. The XP410 can print 8.7 pages per minute (ppm) and 4.5 ppm in color. The Epson scanner will do...

Maker Studios Acquires Blip.tv

This actually happened last week, but I finally got the email this morning stating that Blip will be acquired by Maker Studios – on of the largest YouTube MCNs, with over 4 billion views monthly through 60,000 channels. The announcement went as follows: I’m excited to announce that Blip has been acquired by Maker Studios, a next-generation media company and the world’s largest multi-channel network of online video content. This means exciting things for the future of Blip and our community of talented independent producers. Your passion for creating entertaining, informative, and engaging video is part of Blip’s DNA. We want that collaborative relationship to continue. A few things that are important to clarify: the core Blip toolset (producer dashboard, video player and monetization tools) will remain the same; Blip.com will continue to operate as a robust entertainment destination; and the industry-leading Blip sales team will be ramping up their sales game....
