iRig2 for iOS, Android – Time to Rock on Your Guitar – CES 2015

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI have been a big fan of IK Multimedia and the iRig. However, since I moved to Android devices, it got tougher to use these great musical additions. At CES 2015, they changed that with the new iRig 2 guitar interface which now supports Android devices. I talked with Derek of IK Multimedia about the new iRig 2 adapter for your guitar. Along with the Amplitude for Android you can now add pedal effects to your guitar for practice or performance. With the additional bluetooth pedal board, you can preset your sounds and have them ready at a touch of a button. Of course you can also use your iOS device the exact same way with the Amplitude for iOS. The iRig 2 includes a amplifier out, headphone out, gain control and FX-through switch so you can even connect to your existing...

Motorola Droid Turbo Give Battery Life to Your Phone

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIn today’s mobile world, we want one thing from our smartphones – the ability to hold battery life. The Motorola DROID Turbo is the latest in high-end battery smartphones that not only holds charge, but can recharge 30% within 15 minutes. On the Verizon Network it becomes the workhorse you need for when you need it. Now usually I take a week or two to get to know the phone then review. Every now and then I like to slow a review period down to really get to know the phone. Would it become a phone I could use for the next two years? I also took it with me to the biggest battleground I know of. The Consumer Electronics Show. If you’ve ever went to a major event like this, you know two things – at the end of the day...

Zolt Charger Plus: Alternate Power Brick for Your Laptop – CES 2015

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSOur laptops are getting smaller and smaller. Yet the power brick you use to charge up the battery seems to stay the same large device. The folks at Zolt want to change that with the Zolt Power charger – a laptop charger that is a fraction of the size. The Zolt power charger looks similar to any tablet or smartphone charging wart. Four times smaller than your laptop charger, this could fit into your bag easy. Best part – your laptop charger can stay at home on the desk. Zolt Charges More than Laptops Zolt is for 60 or 70 Watt laptop chargers. Best part – there are two more USB ports for your smartphone or tablet. Neil Young’s Pono Player Brings Hi-Fi Mobile Music

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSBack at SXSW, Neil Young talked about a new media compression algorithm that keeps a lot more of the music at a comparable filesize. The Pono music system allows you to listen to music at a higher fidelity than even 320 kbps MP3 files. I got to talk with the folks at Pono while at CES 2015 and check out the player itself. The Pono player itself looks pretty simple but big. Inside is 64 GB for storage with a removable 64 GB card slot for more music and albums. It has two 3.5 mm jack options – one for headphones and one for high quality stereo output. This system could give you at least 5,000 songs on your player at any given time. Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSStopping at the Flir booth at CES, I learned about how Flir has improved on their new FlirOne thermal imaging system for iPhone. They retooled the device and made it an attachment working for all iOS devices. Further, they added an Android version. I talked with Travis Merrill from Flir. Now there is a new iOS platform, they decided to go with a more portable connector – for iOS anything with a Lightning connector, and Android with micro-USB connector. Gogo Inflight Internet is Improving Your Connections – CES 2015

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile at the International CES show, I got to talk with Steve Nolan of Gogo inflight Internet. We learned about how their planes have the 2nd generation technology which tripled the bandwidth. Gogo is working on their third generation satellite system which will improve the speeds up to 20 times more. “The technology that helps us bring more bandwidth has to do with the type of antenna we use. Its a very low-profile phased array antenna. We actually used two – one for send and another for receive. The benefits are numerous – the consumers will receive significantly more bandwidth to the plane.” The first planes to get 3rd generation technology will be Aero Mexico and Virgin Atlantic with more coming throughout the year. Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile at the North American International Auto Show, Ford unveiled a bunch of items. They officially introduced Sync 3.0 – the newest version of their in-car computer system. But it was more about the cars, and Ford didn’t disappoint. First off was the Ford F-150 Raptor. This all-terrain truck with 3.5L EcoBoost V8 delivers 411 horsepower and over 400 ft. of torque. The Raptor is a little wider than the F-150 for stability. The best part is this truck will be built right in the new Ford truck plant right in Dearborn, MI. Next up – the Mustang Shelby GT350R. This car was stripped down enough to be street legal with a lot of creature comforts removed – including air conditioning. New Fiesta ST and Focus ST models were also shown, but it was more about the newest car in the line...

SleepPhones is a Headband with Headphones – CES 2015

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSSometimes I put in earbuds to fall asleep to. They are uncomfortable and harder to get in a relaxing position. Big headphones are also bulky and hard to work with. That is where SleepPhones comes in. Dubbed “Pajamas for your ears”, SleepPhones are a headband with headphones inside. They don’t go in the ear and they are not big and bulky. You simply put the headband on, turn on the music and sleep. Or run. Or take it on the plane with you. SleepPhones come in different fabrics for your need. They are machine washable (take out the headphones first) and come with a 1 year warranty. CES 2015 INNOVATION: The company also put out a conductive charger system. They look like decorative pieces and they sit on your nightstand like a lamp. When you are done, dock the headphones up...

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSYou might have seen the lot of tablets on the sidelines. Microsoft Surfaces in not only coaches but also players hands. That is how the teams are reviewing plays – getting away from the printouts. I talked with Beth at CES Unveiled about how Microsoft Surface was being used. They have created a cart system that allows the surface devices to be stored and charged along with kept cool or warm in extreme temperatures. The cases are built to be waterproof and can take a beating if a Quarterback or coach didn’t like the plays on the screen. A hand strap is on the bottom for ease of use and when returned to the cart, they connect to the charger to stay at 100%. The system takes two stills – before the play and after – to show what happened and...

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhen I create content – especially as a one person crew – I’m always looking for ways to make my cameras do more. When I saw the Motrr Galelieo last year I thought this would be a great way to do that. But not living in an iPhone world, it wasn’t a device I could use. Now, Motrr has come out with the GoPro mount to the Galelio. This compliments my video as I can now put the GoPro on a table or up on a tripod to pan audiences or get a timelapse of an event. Get the Motrr Galileo Bluetooth at Amazon About the Motrr Galileo Lets look at the unit itself. The Motrr comes white or black and looks like a hockey puck. Gallery Hotel, Barcelona Spain – Hotel Walkthrough

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIt was my first time in Barcelona and I cannot express how memorized I was with the experience. The capitol of Catalonia, this urban area is a mixture of old Roman buildings, designs by Antoni Gaudi and some pretty impressive graffiti. But my focus is on a hotel in the heart of Barcelona – the Gallery Hotel. Going in December means an average high of 55-60 degrees (12-14 Celsius) but a lot of rain. In the week I was there it was only sunny 2 of the days. Coming from a wintery area, the rain smelled more like spring to me and I was fine with that. About the Gallery Hotel The Gallery Hotel is found down the street of one of the major shopping areas in Barcelona on Carrer del Rosselló and only a block from the subway (Metro Station). This...

How HP Helped “Share a Coke”

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThis year, Coca-Cola had a very popular campaign in “Share a Coke”. So who did they get to help print all the names on the sides of the bottles? HP had that honor. I talked with Doris Brown-McNally from HP’s Graphics Solutions Business about the campaign at HP Discover, the new artwork campaign starting and what that could lead to for businesses. The Target of “Share a Coke” Coke did a survey and found the “Tweeners” (between 8-18 years of age) did not know if they have tried a Coke before. They wanted to tailor a campaign around bringing that demographic in. Coke wanted the bottle to “Visually speak to them”. This campaign did just that. The results of that campaign – According to the Wall Street Journal, Coke’s volumes in the US rose .4% for the summer months whereas sales...

HP Digital Context Aware: Connecting Wearable Technology to Enterprise – HP Discover

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile at HP Discover Barcelona, I got to talk with Dave Gibson and Cliff Wilke – both Chief Technologists at HP. They are spearheading the next wave in Enterprise with Wearable Technology in what they call Digital Context Aware (DCA). DCA is the ability to work cross-platform on all wearable devices with an API to attach to their program so they can send information on the go. The program checks to see if a device is available, then sends information. If one devices is not available, it will move to the next item. A smartphone, smartwatch, Glass, or other content-aware wearable. A service person could get directions to a job, then instructions on performing duties. A first responder could get to the scene of an accident faster and possibly be able to connect with a doctor if the situation is beyond...

Amazon Fire TV Stick vs. Fire TV: A Two TV Solution Under $200

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSEarlier this year Amazon announced the FireTV – a competitor to the Roku and Apple TV. Doubling the specs of both devices, this became my goto choice for over the top television. Now, Amazon has come out with their lower cost version in the Fire TV Stick – mostly to compete with Chromecast and Roku Stick. This $40 device plugs right into your HDMI port in the TV, with a combined power USB cable which – depending on the TV you own – can be powered right through the USB port for a cord-free TV. Before we accellerate on the subject: keep in mind you DO NOT need an Amazon Prime subscription to own or use Fire TV. It does enhance the experience with more content. You can easily just run Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and other apps on Fire TV but...

Motorola Moto-X 2nd Generation with Bamboo Back

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSMost of my phones that I’ve owned made mostly of plastic – From the Nokia 910 to the Razr, iPhone and even the Nexus 5 I currently own. If I ever wanted another texture, I would buy the case. But a phone with a wood back – Better yet, a Bamboo back? What a change in experience THAT is… I am taking a look at the 2nd Generation Moto X in Bamboo, which is now available on the Verizon network. This is one of three backing plates for the device. Also in leather and plastic, along with a soon-to-be released teak, walnut and ebony models, the Moto X not only doesn’t need a case, it IS its own case. The best part is how well it feels in your hand. In the last year I’ve held onto some small, medium and...

Taking the Amtrak Train: Walkthrough of the Roomette Sleeper Car

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSJennifer and I took a vacation to New York City. Instead of flying out, we did something a little more unorthodox in this day and age – took the train. From Chicago to New York City, we clacked around the Midwest and East coast with the Amtrak Cardinal line, coming home via the Amtrak Lakeshore. An amazing experience that not only let us see the sights but also appreciated the travel. Walkthrough of the Amtrak Roomette Sleeper Car There are three ways to travel via the train – in the coach seating, through a Roomette or the Viewliner bedroom. We stayed in the roomette through our travel, but I was also able to walkthrough the higher end viewliner. The roomette is a 3.5 foot by 6 foot room for two people the two seats turn into a single sleeper bed while...

This is the newest GoPro camera for live action recording. You might have seen skydivers, skateboarders, custom car owners, and other groups create some awesome video and this little device is ususally taking the video. As you can see, its a little larger than a box of Tictacs – with the waterproof case you could easily fit it in your pocket ready for any life moment to happen. There are three buttons on the HERO4 – a power button, shutter button and settings button. Each button has multiple options so you can create video, take stills or continuous shots. Podcast Microphones: Audio-Technica ATR2100 vs. IK Multimedia iRig mic HD

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWe have another podcast microphone showdown as I look at two USB podcast mics that you can use for recording audio. Audio-Technica’s popular ATR2100 USB/XLR hybrid microphone and IK Multimedia’s iRig Mic HD USB/iPad microphone. I have pitted the 2100 against the 2500 but now we’re looking at podcast microphone vs. podcast microphone. You can use these microphones with all iOS, Mac and PC software. These microphones will not work on an Android phone without 3rd party adapters. IK Multimedia iRig Mic HD This is a Condenser microphone only in USB format. The micro USB cord is interchangable with USB, iOS 30-pin and lightning cables. One side of the microphone is a db volume dial and the other is an indicator light. The light is blue during passive sound states, green when signal is coming through and red if the signal is clipping. The Future of Terrestrial TV with ATSC 3.0 and FUTURECAST

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSLast night I got to experience something just as amazing as the first television broadcast signal in 1928. Ultra HD content broadcast from a tower only a few miles away. With the new ATSC 3.0 format was a technology developed by LG and Zenith called FUTURECAST. I sat down and talked with industry professionals to find out more about this concept. What is ATSC 3.0 It stands for Advanced Television Systems Commitee. Currently, DTV runs on ATSC 1.0, which pushes a MPEG-2 or H.264 video across airwaves. This is a one-way signal that can get easily interrupted if you have poor line-of-sight with your TV tower. I live less than a mile from towers and my signal was always poor-to-moderate. ATSC 3.0 is the newest revision that improves greatly on performance and bandwidth. In order to do so, it is not as...
