SmallHD Focus External Monitor with Visibility in Daylight

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSAs a sole camera operator in my travels, I find it difficult at times to see the camera screen. The new Canon M5 screen doesn’t articulate right, so sometimes I have to frame a videos, then trust it’s position. If I had to do a close-focus shot from a lens, that could definitely go south. SmallHD makes video monitors for your camera. Not only ones that allow you to position for yourself, but also ones that add extra features so your camera shot is the best it can be. With a full touchscreen, the 5 inch Focus is for the Vlogger or Video podcaster like myself. About the SmallHD Focus The Focus will show you a 720p resolution video, 294 PPI, and 800 nits. This allows for viewing the screen even if the sun is beating down on you. The camera works...

Cam Caddie Lightweight Handle Helps Stabilize Video

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSCameras are getting smaller and harder to grip at times. If you are trying to get video at cool angles, it’s harder to hold the camera and keep it stabilized. That is where Cam Caddie can help. Their lightweight handles allow you to not only hold the camera in positions that keep you upright, but also add lights, microphones, monitors, and even a second camera to get a backup shot. I checked out the Scorpion EX at Vidcon. This device can hold my Canon M5 camera without issue. The Rode camera mic could actually get positioned closer to the interview subject. An amazing system and the price was too good to not purchase one ($59.99). You can get a Scorpion EX here.

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSIf you’ve played guitar, you’ve seen other’s guitar pedal rigs. A big box filled with pedals and power cords so they can get the right sound for a song. But what if you could jam that all into one pedal? What if I said you can with an iPad, two apps, and a single pedal? You can then play your guitar and make it sound as close to the actual artist as possible. My guitar setup Simply put, I have an iPad Pro 10.5 (2017 model). Inside are two apps: Tonebridge, and Tabs. Both of these apps are made by Ultimate Guitar. Tonebridge App A simple app that turns the tone of a song into a simple pedal. Want to play “Stairway to Heaven”? New in Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2017

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSAl Mooney sat down with me at NAB 2017 to let me know all the cool new features that Premiere Pro contains. Lots of cool beta programs that you can start to use right away. Just like the Character Animator, which programs such as the Late Show with Stephen Colbert started using right away. This is part of an “Instant on” option: when something gets announced, you can start using it by updating the program. This is true for all Adobe Creative Cloud programs. As for Premiere Pro, it’s more than just editing. Color, audio, and motion graphics have been the main focus. For color, Adobe added a lumetri color panel. Audio also has a panel that gives you a essential sound panel – a visual screen to help clean up sound points. An auto-match loudness will normalize all sound clips. Easier for...

AirScouter Wearable Display from Brother for Monitoring Video

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSAs a videographer, sometimes you can’t poise a camera to view through the eyepiece or even the display. If you are moving with your camera, sometimes you have to trust it’s capturing the way you want it. External monitors help, but you can’t always keep your eyes on it while moving. Brother has a solution to this in the AirScouter. This is a head-worn device that displays a 720p image in one eye. As you move throughout the shot, you can simply glance up to the screen to see if you are in the frame you envisioned. This is a wired pack, connected through SDI (HDMI version may also become available). Brother does make a wireless AirScouter for drone use. If you need to shield the sun, simply wear a hat. If you need even more light removal, you can get the...

Adobe Character Animator Uses Facial Recognition to Animate in Real Time

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSIf you have been watching Late Show with Stephen Colbert, you might have seen cartoon Donald Trump get interviewed from time to time. What if I told you the software they use you can get for only $49.99 a month? Adobe has been beta testing the new Character Animator with anyone that has a Creative Cloud subscription. Character Animator allows you to bring a Photoshop or Illustrator image in to make the animation happen. Using facial recognition, you can control the character you make in real-time. I got to check out this program at NAB this week. You can talk through the character like Terry Fator talks through his puppets. This brings a new level of video production as audio podcasters can now create videos without having a camera on them – well, sort of. Other animation options allow you to move arms and legs...

Wirecast 7.6 Adds NDI Support, Allows Adobe Character Animator

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSA long time user of Telestream Wirecast, I was really happy to spend some time in their booth at NAB to learn about 7.6. Since the release of Wirecast 7, they have stepped up the game with cool features that really compete in the live streaming space. And now with incorporating NewTek’s open architecture Netrwork Device Interface (NDI), Wirecast can go in a lot of cool directions. For starters, Wirecast can bring in Adobe Character Animator into a scene. The program allows you to make a 3D character, then use facial recognition to give the animation life. Just like with what Stephen Colbert does with Cartoon Donald Trump. Down the road you will be able to bring an NDI connected camera into a scene. You could have your team live in different parts of the world, and work the Titler Live from their...

ChromaKey using ReflecMedia light, backdrop

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSMost of us that use Chromakey have painted a wall green or blue. But what if you didn’t have to paint a wall? What if you could put down a grey backdrop, then, with a light, create the chromakey so you can wear that green shirt or blue pants? ReflecMedia has a great solution for your chromakey need. Using a specialized backdrop and a ring-style light around the camera, the backdrop turns the color of the light. A simple system starts at $1900.

Switcher Studio Uses Your Phone for Facebook Live Cameras

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSThis is not a new idea, but it is a newer innovation. Systems have tried to incorporate mobile video in their production switchers, but there has normally been a fail, especially when audio is involved. Switcher Studio has worked out that problem and turned their program to all mobile devices. I first saw this program at SXSW when a one-on-one interview was being conducted. Two phones, one iPad (for switching the video content). The phones would connect to the iPad via WiFi, then the iPad would not only swap out the video, but also add lower 3rds, graphics, and pre-recorded scenes. I grilled Switcher Studio on the latency issues. The biggest issue being lag from a phone to the audio track being supplied. I was assured that as long as audio came into the iPad via Lightning or headset, it will match...

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSI use Vegas Pro for most of my video post-production. I love the fact it’s a one-time purchase, along with the idea which started in my home town. Last year, Magix purchased the software suite. They have since upgraded both Vegas and Movie Studio software. But which one should you get? Before you start, check out the review of Vegas 14 on Geekazine. Differences Between Vegas Pro and Movie Studio Overall, these are the main differences between the two versions.
