Goodbye, Steve Jobs. Thanks for all the Fish….

As you probably heard by now, Steve Jobs – Apple CEO – has stepped down from that role. They initiated an executive order and Tim Cook took over as CEO. Steve instantly became Chairman of the Board. “Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company,” said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple’s Board. “Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration.” – Official Press Release Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak went from 2 guys in a garage to 2,000 employees. Roku 2 Set Top Box Changes the OTT Game, adds Angry Birds [Unbox Me]

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSEver since I got my Roku last year, I was completely sold. This set top box was the David to Apple’s Goliath (Apple TV). The prices matched Apple’s and the content was plentiful – It even had content Apple didn’t. Now, it’s taking the game one step further. By making this into a gaming system. Adding Angry Birds to the line-up, you can now play the game on the big screen. But how will this stack up? Unbox Me is brought to you by: Tech Assitance in a Flash try secure and reliable Goto Assist Express Today! Size Does Matter, if it’s smaller The first noticeable difference is the size.  From 5″ x5″ to 3 – 3/8″ square (which is smaller than Apple TV), the Roku 2 could be placed closer to a TV set. The puck-like shape connected to HDMI, composite, USB and micro SD cards. The...

Why Blockbuster doesn’t Get It. Get on Roku, Boxee, iPad, Kiosks! 1

Why Blockbuster doesn’t Get It. Get on Roku, Boxee, iPad, Kiosks!

Yesterday I read that More Blockbuster stores are closing. Blockbuster is falling – with a losing 2010 and not a very great first half of 2011. Yet Netflix and Redbox seem to be doing pretty well. I don’t get it – Doesn’t Blockbuster see the writings on the wall? More important, why are they not on a platforms that work, like Roku or Boxee? I remember when Blockbuster gobbled up local retailer Doorstep Video (they actually delivered movies like pizza), then Video Station. A little company from Texas really put the screws to local video retailers. If you wanted a video, pull that Blockbuster card out of your back pocket. But the movie environment changed. I also remember 2002, I had a Netflix membership for 6 months. Their disk system was horrible – when I did get a new DVD, 2/3 of the time the disk skipped or...

OTT #6: Where to Host Your Videos for OTT Distrobution

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSOn Episode 6, we get into the content creation side of the OTT. You have created your videos, now it’s time to send to the world. But where are you going to upload your videos to? In this episode, Jeffrey Powers talks the current news of OTT. He then gets into locations you can look into purchasing space to upload video. The most important thing to note is never put your audio/video where you host your website. It simply cannot handle traffic if a video goes viral. Last thing you need is a website that went down due to bandwidth or visitors. News of OTT: IE9 RTM is now out. Apple iPad2 is out AppleTV gets MLB, NBA Channels Places to look at uploading video: – Blip.tv – YouTube – Limited STB use, though – Host your own, like Amazon EC2,...

Malware Removed from the Android Marketplace (Updated)

Malware Removed from the Android Marketplace (Updated)

The BBC reports that about 50 virus-infected apps have been removed from the Android Marketplace. Apparently, the authors of the malware took legitimate apps, injected them with malware, and then republished them under under a different name from the legitimate author. From the story: The virus-laden apps were discovered by a Reddit user called Lompolo who realised that one program was listed under the name of a publisher he knew had not written it. He found that the app, which let people play guitar on their handset, was the same as the original but for a name change and some virus code buried within it. Lompolo said the rogue apps had been downloaded between 50,000 and 200,000 times since they were placed on the Marketplace. Unfortunately, the article did not have a list of the infected apps, which have already been removed from the Android Marketplace. If I...

How Verizon Half-Assed the iPhone 0

How Verizon Half-Assed the iPhone

So I was sitting in Houston, TX with Jake Luddington. I made this prediction (the night before the announcement) that the iPhone on Verizon was going to hit 40 million in the first 30-60 days. It was a stretch, but it was based on the masses who have been waiting patiently for the CDMA iphone, mixed with those 3GS, 3G and first gen iPhone users also biding their time. Jake said I was insane to make that prediction. That is because I thought Verizon would have at least the patience to wait for the iPhone 5 to come out. With the 4G service and Verizon network, I could see that population do a mass-exodus like no other phone would. But then Verizon had to go ruin it. Of course, we heard that Verizon is going to release the CDMA version of the iPhone4. You cannot do data on at...

Apple iPad Gains in Business Market 0

Apple iPad Gains in Business Market

Bloomberg reports that JPMorgan is going to supply its investment bankers with iPads. This cannot be good news for RIM, the manufacturers of Blackberry, as iPhones are starting to challenge Blackberries in their stronghold of business users. Apple is building on its momentum in the tablet space, leveraging its 95 percent market share to expand from its traditional consumer base into the corporate market as RIM readies a rival device, the BlackBerry PlayBook. The Canadian maker of smartphones is trying to catch up with Apple as banks including Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse Group AG unveil applications for the iPad and Citigroup Inc. and Bank of America Corp. consider letting employees use iPhones instead of Wall Street’s 11-year-old device of choice, the BlackBerry. In the early days of personal computing, Apple was dominant because, until the IBM PC came out, they were the only significant player for desktop...

Library of Congress: Jailbreaking iPhone Not a Copyright Issue 0

Library of Congress: Jailbreaking iPhone Not a Copyright Issue

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSToday I learned that the Librarian of Congress is required every three years to clarify requirements of the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) (primarily, I gather, to take into account changes in technology). The latest update, issued today, included a ruling that copyright cannot be used to prevent purchasers of smartphones, including iPhones, from jailbreaking them so they can install applications not approved by the manufacturer. The Bloomberg report indicates the reasoning for this is that jailbreaking for this purpose is not to duplicate or steal anything, but to promote interoperability. From the Bloomberg report: Owners of Apple Inc.’s iPhone can unlock the device in order to use applications not authorized by the company, the U.S. Library of Congress said. Librarian of Congress James H. Billington added the practice, described in the ruling as “jailbreaking,” to a list of actions that don’t...
