Dan Lynch interviews Vinton Cerf – Founding Internet Father: Interop 2011

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIt’s always a treat when you get to hear from one of the people that helped create the technology  we use today. Vinton Cerf is one of those people. If it wasn’t for his efforts (along with Bob Kahn), we might not have the infrastructure that is around today. Another legend in his own right, Dan Lynch is the founder of Interop, and in his own words, “Retired Bum”. The two sat down to talk technology, history and more. Vinton talks about his time now at Google. He mentions how ambitious the kids there are. He concludes with “It is a good day for me if I can make two 26 year-olds tired”. The two also discuss ARPANET. Vinton gives Dan a segment of the original cable on a plaque. Dan quips back by mentioning that he gave Vinton the segment...

Don’t Forget to “Fall Back” – Clocks Back 1 Hour on Nov 7th 0

Don’t Forget to “Fall Back” – Clocks Back 1 Hour on Nov 7th

If you live in an area that observes Daylight Savings Time, then it’s time to change the clocks. Fall back; Spring forward. Since it’s fall, we take it back one hour. You get an extra hour of sleep (unless you’re up until the rooster calls), as 2PM on Sat. Nov 6th becomes 1 AM. Need to figure out how your VCR, microwave or stove clock gets set? Check out a handy little site from Retrevo, which shows you how to set your clock back. For those of you with an iPhone, Europe had a problem with DST. The clocks didn’t set the alarms right. Therefore, you might want to have an alternate standing by Monday morning. Have a great weekend of fun and don’t forget to fall back. Otherwise you’ll be at work way too early on Monday.

Top 10 People to meet @BlogWorld 0

Top 10 People to meet @BlogWorld

Well, BlogWorld is only a couple days away and it is poised to be one of the most informative shows for any blogger, podcaster or videopodcaster out there. The list of names reads like a United Nations summit of people in Social Media. The most interesting part of BlogWorld & New Media Expo is that you start to realize – We all don’t live in one spot anymore. While the West coast still has a great deal of Celebloggers, you will soon see that since you can create content from anywhere around the world, not all of those celebloggers and celebpodcasters reside there. Here is a list of 10 people you should meet and learn from this weekend. As any list goes, we could go on forever. Nonetheless, here are my picks: Adam Corolla Of course, Adam has been a powerful name in the space. The best part...

Want a Viral Video? Get it Banned!

In retrospect, Katy Perry’s “Hot and Cold” remake video with Elmo from Sessame Street that got banned was really not that questionable. I mean, we’ve pretty much allowed shorter skirts since the 1960’s. The song was reworded as a friendship, as opposed to sex. Yet this video – which really wasn’t that great and most likely forgettable in one week – became viral in only a couple days. Why? Because someone felt it was too racy and pulled it. So because of that, everybody has to see what is so bad about this video. It also became fodder for comedians and skit shows. Those like Saturday Night Live. Katy participated in a skit called “Bronx Beat”: one of those segments that I normally ignore because they always seem to be over the top and have little thought in them. But Katy comes out as Maureen Dichico, a teen who “Blossomed”...

That HP x310 Data Vault Saved My Butt Last Week…

7-21 editors Note: Small mistake on verbage. It said backing up is detrimental instead of Fundamental. Thanks to Tom for pointing it out… A few weeks ago, I noticed a small problem with my system. A hard disk issue was afoot. I made some quick changes and got back to stable, while I waited for replacements. However, I did back up with Mozy and I also backed up on the HP x310 Data Vault. Then, it happened. Disk 1 went down. The new disks were here and being prepped, so when it happened, I had to make a quick change. Especially since I had a phone meeting in an hour. I swapped the drives out, reinitialized and got the missing drives back. I then did the restore through Windows Home Server. Within an hour, all 600 gig of active data was restored. The best part was the speed. An...

Announcement: Blogworld Expo – Digital Broadcast Committe

A couple days ago, I accepted the role as “Track Leader” to Blogworld Expo’s Digital Broadcast Committee. The role is to meet with the committee and plan the tracks for Blogworld New Media Expo. The best part is I will be in some pretty good company. Todd Cochrane from Geek News Central, Jim Lauderback and Cali Lewis from Revision 3 and Geekbeat.tv,  Dave Hamilton from Dave the Nerd, Daisy Whitney from New Media Minute, Rob Walsch with more on the way. Of course, we will be trying to get content that you really want to see and hear. But if we don’t see or hear from you, we can only put on content we would like to see and hear. Therefore, I would like to hear from you. Let us know what you think. If you attend a 1 hour discussion, what would it be on; within the...

Day 3 Wrapup – HP Technology Forum

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWell, yesterday’s video had some problems in the recording end. Too bad, I thought it was the best of the videos. The sound was the culprit and it wasn’t fixable through filters like compressors or gates. Andy and I found a nice spot to go over the last day of the HP Tech Forum. In retrospect, we produced 11 interviews and a few coffee table discussions. We caught all the keynotes and had about 3-4 booth interviews. We also had a host of guests that helped out. Of course, the folks at HP and Ivy Worldwide. Then we had Kevin Houston from Blades Made Simple, John Obeto of AbsolutelyWindows, Stephen Fosket of Gestaltit, Frank Owen of Techvirtuoso and Jordan Spencer Cunningham of OSNews. It was a great week of learning and content creation. Now it’s time to mix down and put up on...

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThe 2nd day of the HP Tech Forum is over, but what a fun day from the Studio. An amazing 30 minutes for myself and Andy McCaskey.

HP Technology Forum Day 2: Keynote, Embargo press releases

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSMonday morning, wake up in Vegas to the sun coming up over the mountain side. Pretty cool stuff. I looked at the clock and saw 8 AM, but in all reality it was 10 AM. Once again – pretty cool. Met up with Andy and Joe where we had the morning breakfast – planning meeting. Afterwards, we went to register for the HP Tech Forum. Then it was time to check out the Studio. It’s pretty amazing what they have done to make the Blogger lounge and our studio look so good. Hats off to Becca Taylor and crew! The first session we attended was in Embargo. We recorded the event, which will go up as soon as possible. David Donatelli brought in a series of guests to talk about the new improvements in… Well, we’re still in embargo. Sorry. Check...

HP Tech Forum 2010 Day 1 – Walk around the Hall

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI got into Vegas on Sunday, where I instantly ran into Tom Augenthaler from Ivy Worldwide. After a quick dump of stuff in the hotel, I went down and met up with Kristi Popp and Becca Taylor. We had a nice lunch at the Border Grill, then headed over to the conference hall where we saw the booth we will be broadcasting from. We also walked through the arena where the keynotes take place. This is the hall where major concerts (like Rick Springfield last Saturday) and over events happen. The hall this year looks amazing and I cannot wait to begin recording video at the show. We broke for a couple hours as I went upstairs and rested up. Joined back up with Tom, and Frank Owen for dinner. John Obeto, Andy McCaskey, Joe Palowsky and Stephen joined up during...

Day 1 with Ford Taurus SHO: Ford SYNC System 0

Day 1 with Ford Taurus SHO: Ford SYNC System

A rainy Wednesday morning – I sit in anticipation like an expectant father. A knock at the door and the dogs start barking uncontrollably. They always want to meet who’s at the door – and so did I. For today was a special day; I was getting a new car… Well, at least for a week. Last month I was talking to the guys at Ford, looking to do an over-the-phone interview. However, they came back and said “Well, do you just want to drive the car around for a week?” That set me back a little. “Sure.” I replied. That is what set this whole thing in motion. The car arrived at the house about 10:45 A.M. A 2010 Grey Ford Taurus SHO with the built in SYNC system. Signed some paperwork and I was off to the races!  I was ready to take this vehicle wherever...

Introducing Wikazine 0

Introducing Wikazine

A couple days ago I started working with some others who will be writing for Geekazine. Building the ranks, sort of speak. But as I was doing that, I realized there isn’t a great place for people to go and get more information about Geekazine, Dorkazine, Sportazine and even the Day in Tech History. The collaboration of DITH was the reason why I set up Wikazine. So people can help build Tech History events for the podcast. I also realized that the Wikazine can be used to bring together all of the web site properties. A Wikipedia for Podcasting. Hence, Wikazine is now part of the fold of websites.

Win HP Elite 2530p Notebook from HP – HP Road Show Converged Infrastructure

THIS CONTEST IS OVER. Thanks to all who participated. Within the next few days on Geekazine and SDRNews.com, you will be seeing some great videos on Converged Infrastructure. From redesigning the blades, virtualizing the network, to even monitoring and adjusting the network bandwidth. 6 – 30 minute presentations, and 6 – 8 minute one-on0one discussions with the presenters. The best part is that if you watch the videos, you will see codewords. Go over to Geekazine (right side panel), or SDRNews and you can enter those codewords in the form for a chance to win! What are we giving away? Well, it’s an HP Elite 2530p Notebook. It’s a Intel Core 2 Duo ULV at 1.2 GHz and a 3 MB L2 cache. It contains DDR2 800 MHZ memory, a SATA hard drive, DVD-RW, Mobile Intel GMA X4500...

GoDaddy Fail Brings Geekazine Down for Day

At 10:30 A.M, it was brought to my attention that Geekazine.com wasn’t resolving correctly. It would bring up a 403: Forbidden error. After giving it a half hour, I knew it wasn’t correcting itself. I then called GoDaddy support in where I was told that their internal process seemed to have corrupted the permissions on my sites. I was assured that it would be resolved in a couple hours. I told the support agent of the urgency, especially since this is a podcast day. A couple hours passed and no resolution to the hosting had been made. I went ahead with the show anyway, but come 4 PM, nothing had changed. I called GoDaddy up again, in which I was told the same thing and that this call was to be escalated. Being on a tight schedule as it was, I decided to head out and hope things would...

The WavIT from ThinkOptics Turns Your iPod, iPhone Into a Fully Functional Remote Control – CES 2010

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Editors Note: I would love to point to the website right now of ThinkOptics and the Wavit, but for the last few days it’s been reporting a trojan on the site. Therefore, no links will be given at this time. When I scanned through North Hall, I found a lot of cool new products out there. This one was the most impressive. Not only could it turn your iPod or iPhone into a presentation remote, it could also turn it into a fully functional remote control. The device is called WavIT from ThinkOptics. They have made presentation devices before, but this one you can plug your Apple device in and use it as a presentation device. Use the pointer, draw on the screen or flip through a Powerpoint. But the more impressive item was it could turn into a fully...

Ch Ch Ch Ch Changes – Moving Servers

Well, as Geekazine grows, we have to accommodate for it. In the last 60 days the site has seen a decent amount of traffic. However, for this smaller server, it can’t handle the load. Therefore, within the next few days, Geekazine will be moving to a new server. Something I’ve been contemplating doing, but at this point, I have no real choice anymore. Because of this, you might see some down time from Dec 13-15th, 2009. Although the site is down, you can get to all the Podcasts – they reside on a different server. You can get them through iTunes easily. Thanks to all who have visited Geekazine. More important – Thanks for making me move to another server. Because of that, I know the sites’ popularity is growing. Jeffrey Powers

A sad day – Ending relations with Mevio – Eastbay Sponsor

This will be the only time I talk about this: Two weeks ago while attending Blogworld – New Media Expo 2009, I went to upload my video content to TVazine – hosted by Mevio. The uploader didn’t work. After trying to get a solution from the online forums, I was told that the person who could help me was not in the office and I wouldn’t have a solution until “the weekend, maybe later”. Because of this issue, I lost out on 4 days of video content. I had put some of it up on geekazine.blip.tv. That uploader was working just fine. I took a week off from producing video content. The decision was made earlier this week and I had begun moving content. I am not sure if I will put up past episodes on blip.tv just yet. Certain videos will be up there, like the “Window7...

Geekazine Original – Blogworld Bound

O.K. I was a little bored tonight, so I put together a song for this next week’s Blogworld – New Media Expo. It’s only a few days away and I am pumped to meet and learn (and relax a bit). Are you going to the show? Let me know. I get there on Wednesday, so we could easily meet up for a “Pre Blogworld drink”. If someone has a guitar with them, I might just pull out the song again. This time with a little bit of practice. After all, I’m a drummer – not a Guitar playing Harmonica hasher…. But for now, here’s an unofficial Blogworld song. If you want to sing along: Doesn’t matter if I got no money. Doesn’t matter at all. I set me a path and now I’m heading down this road. (cause I’m)Blogworld bound – That’s where I’m gonna be. And baby...

999 on 9-09-09 (technically)

OK, so I was looking at my numbers just after midnight CST and found out that Geekazine has pushed 998 articles in the last 2 years. That makes this one 999, with the next being 1000. It’s a great milestone that just happened to do so on 9-9-09. And technically there are some still in the lucky / unlucky day (depending on how you look at it). For me, it was just productive. Worked on DITH, rebuilt a club’s sound system, fixed a couple issues on the site, learned a new song for the acoustic show. Downloaded the Apple 3.1 update and Madden10. That’s how I roll. Once again, the next post will make 1000. 100 podcasts, 1000 posts and 2 years of Geekazine coming up in October. Amazing numbers – Hopefully we’ll double those in less time. Of course if anyone wants to contribute to Geekazine, feel...
