Sony HT-Z9F Sound Bar is Wireless, 4k HDR 3.1 Sound

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSSony showed off the Sony HT-Z9F Sound Bar at CES this year. This sound bar promises total immersion, with exceptional realism, which is exactly what we want in a sound bar. We want to become a part of the movie we are watching and audio is a big part of that. This 3.1ch Dolby Atmos/DTS:X soundbar still has the great horizontal sound engine from previous models, but Sony has added the new Vertical Surround Engine in a soundbar that will fit perfectly in your home. The horizontal engine delivers that virtual sound you already know, while the vertical engine will deliver still richer sounds. Think height, like rain falling, maybe an explosion from up high. This is accomplished with two front speakers facing up. Everything you watch will be in maximum 7.1.2ch sound thanks to digital signal processing that converts any audio...

Sense ThermoPeanut Smart Wireless Thermometer

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSAs we get into the colder months, we make the plans to weatherize and even smart-plan our home. Maybe we got an IoT based thermometer. I just personally bought an Infra-red heat fireplace because this house doesn’t have a fireplace and I miss it. But as we try to keep our homes energy efficiant and warm, we still are looking for the advantage. Maybe the kids say their room is colder than yours at night. Without putting a thermostat in every room, we can only guess if that’s true. Now we can put a thermostat in every room to take the guess out. Last year the folks at Sense came out with the Sense ThermoPeanut. A Bluetooth enabled device that can be placed anywhere and bring back temperature data. SensePeanut data can be sent to any iOS or Android device to...

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge – My Love – Hate Relationship with this Phone

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS  Samsung has always tried to be on the cutting edge of mobile technology. They have continuously tout they have cooler features than the iPhone, and in some cases, they are right. However, the newest phone in their arsenal – the S6 Edge – while cool, shows that not all ideas are great. Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Specs This is a 32 GB device and this particular one is on the Verizon Network. The “Revolutionary design” is basically a side-less phone. The edge of the screen wraps around the phone and can serve as a small display that can tell the time, let you know if someone has called, get calendar alerts, and more. The phone itself is a 5.1 inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass to protect from scratches and drops. The rest of the phone...

TASCAM DR-44WL Four Track Recorder with iPhone, Android Remote

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile at the International CES 2015, I got to sit down with Jeff Laity of TASCAM to learn about new products coming soon. A fan of TASCAM recorders for many years (I still have my TASCAM 4-track tape recorder in the basement) and owner of the DR-60D, I was excited to learn about the DR-44WL and other new recorders coming out. TASCAM DR-22WL and 44WL Jeff showed off the DR-44WL in the video. This is a 4 track recorder with 2 XLR inputs, XY pattern microphone and dual recording feature so you can record a high-quality .WAV file and a lower quality audio file which could be transferred quickly to the web. Both devices handle sound pressure up to 132dB and reduce noise if you are holding the recorder in your hand with cradled shock mounts. The Microphone preamp in the...

In the kitchen you could have a tablet that holds recipes, store utensils, and have a workspace while you are making a meal. In the living room maybe the tech remote could be charging, you could have pens and notepaper at the ready or just make it a charging station. Even out in the garage you could have a small workstation to place your laptop when working on projects...

Top 5 Videos of Geekazine in 2014

Its been a fun ride creating videos this last year. I made some major changes with shows, which really paid off in the end. Geek Smack! got a major overhaul to something more manageable. Here are the top videos you watched: Chromecast vs. Apple TV vs. Roku Throwdown You guys were very interested in Over the Top Television (OTT) and set top boxes. This video had audio issues but you watched it. I even made another version which corrected the audio issues but you still watched this one. That is the power of Social media! Netflix, Amazon or Hulu – the Throwdown It makes sense this would be the 2nd most watched in 2014. You purchased your set top box, you want to know about the programs you can get for it. I talk over each streaming service and which one you might be interested in putting your...

Amazon Fire TV Stick vs. Fire TV: A Two TV Solution Under $200

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSEarlier this year Amazon announced the FireTV – a competitor to the Roku and Apple TV. Doubling the specs of both devices, this became my goto choice for over the top television. Now, Amazon has come out with their lower cost version in the Fire TV Stick – mostly to compete with Chromecast and Roku Stick. This $40 device plugs right into your HDMI port in the TV, with a combined power USB cable which – depending on the TV you own – can be powered right through the USB port for a cord-free TV. Before we accellerate on the subject: keep in mind you DO NOT need an Amazon Prime subscription to own or use Fire TV. It does enhance the experience with more content. You can easily just run Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and other apps on Fire TV but...

AmpRidge Mighty Mic S: iPhone, Android Boom Microphone

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSToday I am looking at the AmpRidge Mighty Mic S. This is a boom style microphone which you can use for your iOS or Andriod device – anything with a 3-pole headset. The microphone is small so it can fit in your pocket. A windscreen is provided to help keep wind noise down and a case is also provided so it doesn’t get pocket lint. The mic also has a headphone jack so you can monitor the recording. AmpRidge doesn’t give any specs to this microphone, but within testing via a Real Time Analyzer, the microphone can reduce the background noise by 5-10 db. That means if you are trying to record that rock concert and someone behind you is talking, you hear less of him and more of the music. Get the Ampridge MightyMic S Shotgun Video Microphone MMS at Amazon...

HTC One M8 vs. Samsung Galaxy S5: Smartphone Throwdown Part 2

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSLast week I showed you the Samsung Galaxy S5 and all its glory. This week, we turn the tables and look at the HTC One M8. These phones are loaners from Verizon, so I thank them for allowing to use for comparison. Next up is the HTC One M8 phone. This device has a definite feel difference since its got a metal back design. You even have color options in gun metal grey, champagne, gold, and now red – which is a Verizon exclusive. The HTC One has added the UltraPixel module for depth of field. So if you are a shutterbug, this device not only will get you the best pictures, but also some great selfies. The phone comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core at 2.3 GHz. The screen is 4.7 inches with 440 ppi. The HTC One also...

DPA d:fine Headset Microphones – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI am always looking for a good microphone to create content with. Recently I ditched the big microphone for most of my video content with a headset mic. I might just be switching again as I checked out the DPA Microphones d:fine series. The d:fine headsets have one big advantage over some of the others on the market – the earpiece isn’t a solid piece of metal. In fact, the DPA d:fine has an interesting curly-q design (I was calling a pig tail). The flexible hook allows to go over anybody’s ear comfortably. Get DPA d:fine microphones at Amazon You can get the d:fine series in 4088 directional or 4066 omnidirectional capsules. The boom arm is completely adjustable and removeable from the ear mount and cable. What this does is allows you to easily adjust the boom (even move the boom...

Zoom H6 Handy High Resolution Audio Recording Device – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI got to see some great recording devices for getting that interview or keynote recorded. One in particular – the Zoom H6 Handy Recorder – is a multi-function recorder that I could use to mic a 6 person interview, a room for an event, a 2-3 person band, and more. The H6 is designed for everyone – musicians to journalists – videographers to sound professionals that don’t want to carry the whole studio with them. The H6 has multiple attachments along with the 4 XLR/TRS inputs. The Zoom H6 can track 6 channels for many different options. At the top is an attachment for a XY microphone, boom mic (with dead cat) or a mid/size capsule for up-close interviews. The unit is fairly small for what it can do. Weighing in at less than 10 ounces you will be able to...

Day 4: Microphones, Sliders, Recorders – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSFinal day at NAB. This is my chance to get around and catch the interviews I missed before. Especially for those audio podcasters out there. I’m intrigued how radio broadcasting is further from audio podcasting. Sure, you can get a radio mixer for a podcast but it would be a little overkill. Still, there are some who like sliders over dials – and are willing to spring for the good stuff if it makes their podcasts better. Omnirax Broadcast Furniture I spent some time talking with Phillip of Omnirax – a company that creates furniture for the broadcaster. We talked about how a podcaster, videocaster, or even voice-over artists could use a well organized desk setup for their recordings. The desk I was at felt good to sit at and record. I was able to get up to the microphone and...

Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast – the Throwdown II

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSLast year when the Chromecast came out, I wanted to highlight the pros and cons of the top set top box devices. That included the Apple TV and Roku. What I called the Throwdown. Yesterday, Amazon announced their entry into the streaming box market. Their set top box made a big splash with the community. Faster than the other media boxes, the Fire TV also plans to compete with the gaming market and an additional wireless controller system. Therefore, I had to bring the competitors back for… The Set Top Box Throwdown II Amazon Fire TV If you have an Amazon Prime account and want to use it more, this box is for you. The Fire TV is  the larger of the four – at 4.5 inches by 4.5 inches. Inside the box is a Snapdragon quad-core processor – just like...

Sony Cybershot DSC QX10 Smartphone Add-On Camera – SXSW 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile at SXSW, I got to try the Sony Cybershot DSC QX10 camera. This is the camera that wirelessly connects to the smartphone and takes over the camera. The 18 megapixel camera can bring higher quality photos into your camera. The add-on lens is one of 2 in the Sony line (QX100 being the higher-end version). The advantages of this camera are you can use your smartphone to capture, then upload photos using the 3G/4G service. You can also disconnect the lens to hold up high while you watch the viewfinder to take the pictures. Finally, the optical zoom of 10x lets you get close-up shots of about 20 feet away. The disadvantages are this lens needs to be charged to use, although you can switch out battery packs for continued photos. The other downfall is how the lens weighs down...

Is Google Hangouts Trying to Get Rid of your Phone Number?

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS What an awesome week in Austin TX for SXSW! Of course, we cannot forget the tragedy that followed the event this year. If that would have happened 24 hours earlier, I might have been part of it. That is how fragile life is. I took NAB off the schedule for now unless I find a last minute sponsor. If you would like to help out, let me know. This weekend, Jennifer and I went to her sister’s house. We watched Frozen for the first time. Its interesting how a good movie can change your mindset. Let it go. Two new products in the review bin – the AMD R7 250 video card and the Blue Mic Nessie (which I am using in this episode). I give my thoughts on these products. Show notes are getting a slight change – moving the...

Absolute Lo-Jack Challenge

I’m Taking the Absolute LoJack Challenge

We are at an age where if we lose our connected devices, we feel lost or even violated. Not only is this a gateway to our friends and family through social apps, but it also contains our pictures, documents, lives – all on a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Last July I had my iPhone stolen (also known as “Cherry picked”), which put me in a loop. I technically went through this challenge back then unwittingly. I ended up getting a $15 “burner” phone while I was on a 2 day trip, then replaced with an old smartphone to save money. Of course we know that a laptop is stolen every 50 seconds. The price of any iPhone on the black market is a couple hundred bucks – while you spend over $600 to replace it yourself. You might have insurance through renters or home owners insurance, but the...

Podcast Microphones: Audio Technica ATR2100 vs. ATR2500

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThe coolest thing about microphone technology is for under $100 you can get a decent microphone for video recording, podcasting or music. A lot of podcasters have been using the Audio-Technica ATR2100, which I reviewed here. But I just got the ATR2500 model and I am truely impressed with the sound it gives. Therefore, this video is a comparison of these two microphones. Audio-Technica ATR2100 This is a handheld dynamic microphone. The mic is meant to be used by musicians, comedians or anyone that needs to hold the microphone at times. It should be placed only a few inches from your mouth. This is a hybrid microphone – XLR to plug into a mixer and USB to plug straight into the computer. You can plug in both XLR and USB, then record from 2 sources. The ATR2100 has a range of...
