Help Keep the Day in Technology History Podcast Going – Kickstarter Project

One of the shows I create has been a labor of love. For the last 5 years, I have been putting together a timeline of technology history on posting on first a weekly, then daily basis. The Day in Tech History was first called the “Week in Tech History” when started in January of 2008. In August, I knew it needed to move to a daily show. Since then, I have recorded 7 days a week – 365 days a year going into it’s fourth season. The show had many great sponsors that have helped the Day in Tech History keep running. However – especially in the last year – Sponsors have been spotty. Besides, I never liked putting sponsors in the middle of a show – however, the cost of living pretty much told me I needed to do this. But then I had a revelation. Actually,...

Are You Addicted to Google+ (Google Plus)?

Hi. I’m Jeffrey Powers and I’m a Google+ addict. I was in a hangout last night that was going pretty well. We were talking about developing in different program languages. But there was a point where I stopped talking and listened (I guess I was getting tired). After 20 minutes of listening, I knew that it was time to turn off from the computer altogether. But I didn’t. Instead, a new friend jumped on and I stayed another hour. When I finally did get off hangout, I got up and noticed that those pesky dishes didn’t get done. I remembered that I filled the sink with soap and water, then filled the pans to soak. I grabbed a quick snack and sat down, looking at my email. Since it was GMail, I noticed the alerts (someone either friended me or responded to posts). That is what sucked me...

Why did Google+ Allow Animated GIF (aka Please stop the Animated GIF) 1

Why did Google+ Allow Animated GIF (aka Please stop the Animated GIF)

The animated GIF has been around for years. In early days, it was a way to send moving images in a low resolution format. Sites like Geocities would have tons of animated blinking signs and moving photos. However, it’s 2011 and the animated GIF pretty much looks like a bad picture. So why did Google+ choose to allow animated GIF files on their social network? Better yet, can I stop these things from loading up? Definition of animated GIF: GIF stands for Graphics Interchange Format. Compuserve introduced it in 1987 that supports up to 8 bits per pixel, therefore creating 256 colors. There are two types 87a (images) and 89a (supporting animation). If you want to read more on GIF, check Wikipedia. How Big is that Animated GIF? Let’s address the first problem with an animated GIF. They can be larger in size. Whereas a jpg is compressed...

Drawing Lines in the Sand: Google+ is Not Facebook. At Least Not Just YET… 1

Drawing Lines in the Sand: Google+ is Not Facebook. At Least Not Just YET…

There are a lot of people that snapped up the Google+ invite when they had the chance. It’s right now mostly made up of Tech-savvy and Social Mediates.  Since it’s introduction last week, there has been a lot of Buzz about it (no, not Google Buzz) – Some have even made the statement that they are moving to Google+ from Facebook. That may not be the best move right now and we’ll talk about why. The Google+ Project Google+ was created to compete with Facebook. Who are you and what are you doing with audio, pictures and video. Google+ is (right now) a social network. People sharing items back and forth with others, people commenting and giving a “+1” (compared to the Facebook Like button). Google+ big difference is how you catalog your friends. You can put them into circles, from the 4 categories they give you (Family, Friends, Acquaintances and...

Social Media Breakfast Madison 4-20-11: Jacob Harlow, Century House

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIn the first half of the Social Media House – Madison, Jacob Harlow from Century House talks about how his business uses social media. He talks about making the experience personal and not being a “bot” on your Twitter or Facebook. Don’t worry about getting lots of followers, just the ones that give or bring you business. During the video, you will see shots of the Century House showroom. Social Media Breakfast is a non-profit organization with focus on educating people on networking. More than just social networking, it’s a morning meeting (usually around 7:30 am) to talk about how you can increase business using different social means. The video was shot looking at a window, which doesn’t always make for best picture.

Dropbox Turns into Social Network with Frenzy for Mac 0

Dropbox Turns into Social Network with Frenzy for Mac

Dropbox is a Cloud service that allows you to place and retrieve files wherever you are. Since it’s inception in 2008, Dropbox has been a great way to share pictures, documents and more. But I never expected it to become a Social Network, too. Frenzy is an application for Mac OS X (what, no Windows?) that sits in the menubar and monitors the Dropbox shares. You add your friends to your lists. When you share a file, they can get notified. When they share or update a file, you can get notified. You can even update statuses and find out what is going on with the friends or colleagues in your network. Frenzy is a great option for those Small businesses that need to share files and communicate, but don’t want to do that through Facebook or Twitter. The Reality is: Frenzy will be a great way for...
