Nuu Media Shows their Stuff with The Nuu Player: Streaming, WebKit and More – CES 2010

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThe media player of CES this year was Nuu Media’s Nuu Player, not the Boxee Box. Hidden in one of the back corners of the South Hall of the Consumer Electronics Show was the people at Nuu Media with their player that will retail for a bit more than the other media player boxes, but it’ll also do more than the other media player boxes. The Nuu Player from Nuu Media does Boxee, so let’s shelve the comparisons right there. It does Boxee and has a 160 GB internal hard drive, which lets us place aside the Apple TV comparisons. On top of that, it streams media from most places that allow it, like CNN, Pandora, YouTube, Facebook video, last.fm, Netflix, MLB.TV, Comedy Central and Flickr. The press release states it plays “all available codecs in any form – video, music,...

File-Sharing Phishing Scam 0

File-Sharing Phishing Scam

The BBC reports that a phishing scam involving torrents has been uncovered. Their headline implies that it targets Twitter. It doesn’t, not specifically. Twitter seems to have been responsible for revealing it. The way it worked was really quite clever. After “doing some digging” the firm (Twitter) found a network of compromised torrent sites that had been set up with the sole aim of stealing logon information. “It appears that for a number of years, a person has been creating torrent sites that require a login and password as well as creating forums set up for torrent site usage and then selling these purportedly well-crafted sites and forums to other people innocently looking to start a download site of their very own,” said the firm. The sites also contained security exploits allowing the person to steal usernames and passwords. After a while, the malware would phone home with...

Facebook Privacy Settings 1

Facebook Privacy Settings

There was an uproar recently when Facebook changed its privacy settings routine. This proves one thing: There is an uproar when Facebook changes anything. Most of the uproar seems to have been that the new default settings are, in the opinion of many, biased towards making more, rather than less, available to “Everyone.” Even the ACLU and the EFF joined in, as this report in the Vancouver Sun points out. I find the critics’ reaction a bit over the top. The critics seem to assume that Facebook users will accept Facebook’s suggested defaults, which do in my opinion make the settings far too liberal. Maybe many persons will, but, frankly, I think that is their problem, not Facebook’s. Somewhere along the line, folks who use computers need to also use their heads and realize that the internet is a public place. The New York Times today had a...

Status Updates and Mad Men 0

Status Updates and Mad Men

I started my career answering hate mail from customers in customer service. Statistics at that time, back when persons communicated by telephone, letter, or even occasionally face-to-face, showed that someone who got bad service would tell, on the average, 10 persons; someone who got good service–that is, someone who got what he or she paid for–might tell one person. Social media may be increasing the reach of negative comments, as Bloomberg reports. A negative review or comment on the Twitter, Facebook or Youtube Web sites can lose companies as many as 30 customers, according to a survey by Convergys Corp. A customer review on one of the sites reaches an average audience of 45 people, two-thirds of whom would avoid or completely stop doing business with a company they heard bad things about, Convergys said, citing its own survey.

#bwe09 day 3 – the expo begins

Started the day on a down note, the phone had some problems. A call to AT&T fixed the problem, but it made me late getting things going. Add to that a problem with uploading video last night and a show that is still in the prep area. Oh well, life doesn’t stop, so it gets left behind for now. Get to the hall to the keynote with Richard Jalichandra from Technorati. He tala about the state of the blogosphere. Basically, where we are in blogging and where we are going. Richard showed us the increasing numbers of bloggers and where they come from. He then says something that got me into new media to begin with.. One thing that still hits hard today. Be Passionate. Next up: the panel keynote – the death and rebirth of journalism.Brian Solis, Joanna Drake Earl, Jay Rosen and Hugh Hewitt are on...

Have Bad Guys Automated Creation of Facebook Accounts? 0

Have Bad Guys Automated Creation of Facebook Accounts?

I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago just through happenstance. Todd Cochrane mentioned it in Friday’s podcast. The Guardian reports a new twist. Roger Thompson of AVG thinks that the bad guys have figured out how to automate creation of phony Facebook accounts. According to Roger Thompson, chief research officer with antivirus company AVG Labs, a rising number of bogus profiles were being used to try and tempt the social network’s users into downloading viruses. In a post on the AVG Labs blog, he explained how the fake accounts had appeared, with a request to download a video. If unsuspecting users clicked on the link, it downloaded a piece of malicious software to their computer. “Clearly, the data snatchers have found a way to automate the creation of Facebook accounts,” Thompson wrote. “I’m sure Facebook will deactivate all these accounts as quickly as they find them,...

What’s the Latin for “Upload Link”? 0

What’s the Latin for “Upload Link”?

Reuters reports that Facebook is unveiling a Latin language option. Like all languages on Facebook, the Latin translation was created by Facebook’s users. According to Facebook there are an additional 55 languages currently being translated or in beta testing including Sanskrit, another language of the past. This would not doubt give great joy to Miss Jacobs, my high school Latin teacher. She was also the high school French teacher. It was a very small country high school. The school didn’t care about your self-esteem–back then, schools realized that achievement builds self-esteem, not vicey-versey–but, by the time you finished, you could by gum read, write, and cipher. All joking aside, I learned more about English grammar in two years of Latin than I learned in 12 years of English classes. Go figure. A personal note: I’m getting my house ready for market. Normal insanity resumes when the paint cans...

Close Encounters of a Viral Kind (Updated) 2

Close Encounters of a Viral Kind (Updated)

(Update at the end.) There’s some malware circulating around Facebook in bogus messages with subject lines like “Wow! Are you really in this video?” I received an email from a friend of mine this morning that contained a forwarded Facebook message: Could you check this out? AVG says it’s a dangerous Trojan Horse virus. Not sure what that is, but don’t want it. (snip signature) [Redacted] sent you a message. Subject: Wow! Are you really in this video? “:) http://www.facebook.com/l/[redacted]:[redacted]” The colon in the web address is significant; more on that later.
