Ford Traffic Tamer App Challenge to Help Reduce Road Congestion

Over the years, I have talked with K. Venkatesh Prasad about Ford’s open source initiative. Today, I was invited to talk with the group over a Google Hangout on the Traffic Tamer app challenge. This is a contest for the open source community to help mash data up and open streets. The challenge is to build hardware and software that can help reduce congestion in urban areas. Whether it be an app that avoids a traffic incident, a reroute if there is a situation, community ride sharing or another new idea, you will be able to submit for a chance at $10,000. Anyone can register. Maybe you are not a coder — that is OK. Put an idea together and post your ideas. You can find others that might also are interested in the idea and could turn it to reality. Ford also works with TechShop to help build...

Ford Fusion Hybrid Driver Assist Car Project

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSFord unveiled a new project to help make driving safer; a part of Ford’s Blueprint for Mobility project. The Ford Fusion Hybrid Driver Assist Car Project is not a driverless car but more of a pre-emptive option so everyone can stay safe. The Ford concept car is not going to be out on the road anytime soon and definitely will not have any weird-looking spinning cameras on the roof. When the technology is ready (10-20 years), the car will 3D model its surroundings so it can watch for any anomalies — a child running to get a ball, a deer coming out of the woods, or the car in front of the other that had to stop abruptly. The Ford driver assist will then spring into action by applying the brakes before you can. Ford partnered with the University of Michigan and...

Windows Phone 7 on Ford’s Microsoft SYNC – Go Further

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI got the opportunity to talk with Chris Elliott – Senior marketing communications manager at Microsoft – about SYNC and Windows Phone 7. Of course, there are many models of Windows Phone, including the Nokia Lumina 900. Chris talks about how SYNC works with all phones – including that old flip phone you might still have. You could be on your phone before you get in your car. As soon as you turn on the car, it transfers the call to the car. You never have to pair it more than once. If your wife has a phone, you can pair a bunch of phones, you can have your favorite, but if they get in the car, they should be able to use it themselves. We also talk about the life cycle of the phone as opposed to the life cycle...
