A More In-Depth Look at Amazon FireTV

Subscribe: iTunes | Android | RSS Lots of great stuff this week as I prepare for NYC and TechCrunch Disrupt. Finishing up the NAB videos this week. Also catching up on some products I had in the wings for a couple months. The studio is getting a spring cleaning so it may look a little different. My office is a mess with boxes and gear I set to the side. I can barely walk through the room anymore! Still waiting on the Aereo vs ABC supreme court ruling. I’ll keep you updated if anything changes. TWIGG was awesome last night but I am having a hard time trying to really understand Google Hangouts. The service took my microphone sound and clipped it. Since I can’t hear my own voice, I had no idea until it posted. I’ll have it fixed by next show. Thanks to all that emailed...

Netflix, Amazon, or Hulu Plus – the Throwdown

This week, Amazon mentioned they may be raising the yearly fee by up to $40. This would make the Amazon Prime service $120 a year, or about $10 a month. Netflix and Hulu Plus have their service for $8 a month. While Amazon offers more to their Prime service, is it worth keeping with the price increase. Better yet, if you only had $10 / month to spend on a service, which one would you buy? The Good and Bad of Netflix Netflix has a streaming service and a DVD rental service. They used to be one entity, but were split into two, with hopes to sell the DVD rental side. Once Qwikster fell apart, the company focused on the streaming — especially TV shows. Netflix is great for TV enthusiasts and kids. There are a ton of shows they can watch over and over again. I have...

Record Shows on your PC with Hauppauge Win-TV DCR-2650

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSI have been very busy these last few weeks and have missed a lot of TV. In the past, I would have just shrugged it off and possibly caught it through On-Demand or HuluPlus. Before I left, I set up a Hauppauge Win-TV DCR-2650 to a Windows PC running Windows Media Center and recorded all my favorite shows. About the Hauppauge DCR-2650 Win-TV device The Hauppauge is a unit that connects your cable to a machine running Windows 7 and Media Center. The unit requires an M-Card, which is a card you can get from your cable company (for a rental fee). The DCR-2650 features a dual tuner mode so you can record one show and watch another. Simply connect your coaxial cable to the DCR-2650 unit. Connect the USB cable to the computer and install the driver software. You will have...

This will feature more than 50 international programming channels including Hindi, Arabic, Urdu, Bangla and Brazilian channels. DISHWorld enables DISH to expand its distribution of ethnic channels into markets harder to reach by satellite. “We view Roku’s extensive product distribution and established platform as an excellent match for our international content offerings as we look to develop markets that historically have been difficult for us to reach,” said Chris Kuelling, vice president of international programming at DISH. “Consumers in apartment buildings, condos and dormitories who seek ethnic programming now have an easy way to enjoy their favorite channels without the need for a satellite dish.” ABOUT ROKU:  A simple device that delivers streaming services to various HDTV’s, consoles, and Blue Ray Players. Hulu Plus on Roku 0

Hulu Plus on Roku

Roku officially launched the Hulu Plus application. Sad news is you can only get Hulu on Roku if you pay $7.99 and that doesn’t limit the amount of commercials. Nonetheless, we are one step closer in cutting the proverbial cable cord. The service will hit other boxes like PS3 and XBox360 soon. “We are excited to bring Hulu Plus to all Roku users,” said Pete Distad, VP of Content Distribution for Hulu. “With Hulu Plus on Roku, TV fans will have an easy way to streamto their TVs the shows they love, whenever they want.” The $7.99 price change has given Netflix a run for their money. With a less than 24 hour turnaround for NBC, ABC and FOX content, you can definitely watch the shows when you want. On the other hand, Netflix doesn’t put commercials in movies and TV. The content is uncut and gives you...

What Does YouTube Need To Do to Cover Costs – Quickcast

Subscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSYouTube has established it’s name for the last 4 years as the place to post your videos. It didn’t matter what they were – as long as they were not of adult or copyrighted material. They’ve also seen some growing pains attached to pushing out home made content. The Baby dancing to a Prince song is a good example. With Hulu coming on to the scene and the ever rising cost of bandwidth use, YouTube has realized they have to change their business plan to survive. However, it seems that their new business model might just create an adverse effect because it makes more work for the people pushing the content. So where is YouTubes’ Happy Medium?

Most Interesting Error in Going to Hulu… 7

Most Interesting Error in Going to Hulu…

I went to Hulu this afternoon to catch up on my HEROES. I didn’t get to see it on Monday, so I knew that I could go up there and watch the show without issue. Or COULD I? Turns out Avast won’t have it. It is blocking the SWF from playing and saying “Malicious Code”. Tried a few times in Firefox and IE. Every show or movie I try to play comes up with the same thing. Here’s the kicker – neither Avast nor the Event viewer is showing any more info. In fact, it’s not even logging the event! Could this be a malicious code? Could it be that Avasts’ database is off? Maybe Hulu changed some stuff to thwart Boxee from going through the RSS backdoor? Well, there is a way around that. I went to NBC.com and watched the episode. I hope it’s not a...
