SXSW 2018: Comfort Bots Steal Show Floor

Meet Chappet, the talking yellow button with a voice babies must love. It can be affixed to any object and allows you to communicate remotely, or it can communicate for you. When sensing a baby is crying, Chappet will start playing lullabies to soothe it, and parents can talk to the baby through the iOS and Android app. Black Mirror applications include spooking friends at a party or bugging a meeting in states where wiretapping is legal. Battery life is 1.2 hours and the app is compatible with iOS 9.0 and Android 55.0+. Available on Amazon for $54.99. I have yet to try the one the company gave me but was able to get this demo at the booth: Japan-based comfortbot, Qoobo, the pillow with a tail, was also on the show floor, featured here playing with Sony’s robot dog, Aibo. Switcher Studio Uses Your Phone for Facebook Live Cameras

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThis is not a new idea, but it is a newer innovation. Systems have tried to incorporate mobile video in their production switchers, but there has normally been a fail, especially when audio is involved. Switcher Studio has worked out that problem and turned their program to all mobile devices. I first saw this program at SXSW when a one-on-one interview was being conducted. Two phones, one iPad (for switching the video content). The phones would connect to the iPad via WiFi, then the iPad would not only swap out the video, but also add lower 3rds, graphics, and pre-recorded scenes. I grilled Switcher Studio on the latency issues. The biggest issue being lag from a phone to the audio track being supplied. I was assured that as long as audio came into the iPad via Lightning or headset, it will...

There is a bad joke out there saying Scott Baio took him over the line after the announcement that...

Choetech 5 Port USB Surge Protector, Griffin Reversible Lightning Cable

Today, I take a look at two USB products in the Choetech Surge protected 5-USB port charger, and the Griffin reversible USB to Lightning connector. Both are great products to have for your USB or iOS needs. Griffin Reversible USB to Lightning Cable Don’t you hate it when you can’t plug the USB cable in, so you think it’s backwards and flip it around only to find out the first way was right? Back in January, Griffin showed their solution to this problem in the reversible USB cable.  Now, the cable is out and ready for use. I checked out the 5 foot cable – a braided nylon cable with a more protective jacket at the plug ends. I put it in a high-traffic room to see how it would fair. Whereas my standard iPad/iPhone cable looked very dirty and sticky after a few days in this area,...

ZAGG Pocket Wireless Keyboard: Foldable Keyboard for your Smartphone

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSMobile devices have become more powerful, but sometimes their size makes it harder to do things like type up notes, messages and more. ZAGG is helping those who need to use their phones in more of a laptop setting with the ZAGG Pocket foldable keyboard. I have used ZAGG products for a few years now. The Folio on my iPad has turned that tablet into a more powerful machine and I don’t have to bring my laptop to everything. That is where the Pocket comes in even handier – all you need is a pocket to put the keyboard into. About the ZAGG Pocket Foldable Keyboard The Pocket folds up into the size of a pencil case. Unfold it to reveal a slightly smaller keyboard, stand for your phone, and kickstand to hold it at an angle. Bluetooth connection to the...

Saloote is the Best Way to Collaborate with Others Through Your IOS Device

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSSometimes musicians just want to jam with others. It gets difficult because there might not be others around. But Saloote might be able to help as it uses your iPhone to record and mash up videos to create your virtual band. Saloote is an app that allows you to sing or play an instrument with your favorite song. You could be all about that Bass, Happy, or just want to stay together. You record your track and look for other instrumentalists to help give you that one-of-a-kind sound. If you find someone better, simply replace them in the mash-up. Create videos and share them with friends. You might even be able to practice with some musicians in another town to see if they could actually play out when you get there. Dylan even mentioned a collaboration version, which will be in...

iRig2 for iOS, Android – Time to Rock on Your Guitar – CES 2015

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI have been a big fan of IK Multimedia and the iRig. However, since I moved to Android devices, it got tougher to use these great musical additions. At CES 2015, they changed that with the new iRig 2 guitar interface which now supports Android devices. I talked with Derek of IK Multimedia about the new iRig 2 adapter for your guitar. Along with the Amplitude for Android you can now add pedal effects to your guitar for practice or performance. With the additional bluetooth pedal board, you can preset your sounds and have them ready at a touch of a button. Of course you can also use your iOS device the exact same way with the Amplitude for iOS. The iRig 2 includes a amplifier out, headphone out, gain control and FX-through switch so you can even connect to your existing...

FlirOne Thermal Imaging for iOS and Android – CES 2015

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSStopping at the Flir booth at CES, I learned about how Flir has improved on their new FlirOne thermal imaging system for iPhone. They retooled the device and made it an attachment working for all iOS devices. Further, they added an Android version. I talked with Travis Merrill from Flir. Now there is a new iOS platform, they decided to go with a more portable connector – for iOS anything with a Lightning connector, and Android with micro-USB connector. Flir made some enhancements to the first generation FlirOne. The major enhancement is this device is four times the resolution. The camera has two optics – one with thermal imaging and a regular camera so you can overlay the two. Auto shutter gives you a constant temperature and no manual calibration. Finally, the FlirOne has a 1,400 mAh battery, giving it a...

Motrr Galileo Robotic Gimbal with GoPro Mount Review

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhen I create content – especially as a one person crew – I’m always looking for ways to make my cameras do more. When I saw the Motrr Galelieo last year I thought this would be a great way to do that. But not living in an iPhone world, it wasn’t a device I could use. Now, Motrr has come out with the GoPro mount to the Galelio. This compliments my video as I can now put the GoPro on a table or up on a tripod to pan audiences or get a timelapse of an event. Get the Motrr Galileo Bluetooth at Amazon About the Motrr Galileo Lets look at the unit itself. The Motrr comes white or black and looks like a hockey puck. The Motrr can rotate clockwise or counter and its top can be twisted vertical so you...

Podcast Microphones: Audio-Technica ATR2100 vs. IK Multimedia iRig mic HD

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWe have another podcast microphone showdown as I look at two USB podcast mics that you can use for recording audio. Audio-Technica’s popular ATR2100 USB/XLR hybrid microphone and IK Multimedia’s iRig Mic HD USB/iPad microphone. I have pitted the 2100 against the 2500 but now we’re looking at podcast microphone vs. podcast microphone. You can use these microphones with all iOS, Mac and PC software. These microphones will not work on an Android phone without 3rd party adapters. IK Multimedia iRig Mic HD This is a Condenser microphone only in USB format. The micro USB cord is interchangable with USB, iOS 30-pin and lightning cables. One side of the microphone is a db volume dial and the other is an indicator light. The light is blue during passive sound states, green when signal is coming through and red if the signal is clipping. The...

Acoustic Stream is a Bluetooth Wireless Guitar and Microphone

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSImagine a device that can send your guitar signal and vocals to the amp, then give you a wireless in-ear. That is what Acoustic Stream is all about. Acoustic or electric guitar – Acoustic stream could be the bluetooth wireless alternative. Backed as a Kickstarter, Acoustic Stream was able to raise the money to continue development to this device. The Bluetooth dongle pairs with an iOS or Android device to turn into a recording unit, tuner, or push the signal to an amplifier. Best part is you don’t need a pickup on the guitar – the Acoustic Stream will become that pickup. I talked with Bob Bean – creator of the device. He has been working on this project and plans to turn this into your 4-in-1 wireless device. That means you will be able to also connect a microphone and...

Voycee: Your History Free Social Network – Disrupt 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThe easiest way to say it – it’s Snapchat for social networking. Voycee is an incognito social network. You create your post and send it. People read the post then it disappears into the night. I talked with Ilfan Radoncic of Voycee – suited up like the Men in Black – who showed me the network. He states there are certain celebrities and sports stars that want to post something and not have it blow up on social networks. With Voycee, there is no timeline, no archived posts. Nothing to say that post existed. You can say something that people can read in the moment and then let it go in the wind. Voycee is available now for iOS with an Android app coming soon. Day 1 of NAB 2014 – Cases, Lights and Streaming Boxes

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSDay 1 of the NAB show expo was informative and eye-opening. As a video podcaster, I checked out a lot of great items and new ways to create content. My first travels went to the North hall which saw a lot of broadcast specific items. These were hardware and software solutions which would cost broadcasters $10,ooo or more. While these are not things a normal podcaster would invest in, I still got to understand how things like closed captioning, satellite feeds, multi-studio broadcasting, and more worked. Central hall brought products I could sink my teeth into. I started with a company that produces camera teleprompters. This is something I see more home creators get into. You can set up an iPad with software, then place it in this device to read during your show. Control the speed with an app or...

Absolute Lo-Jack Challenge

Absolute LoJack Challenge & My Stolen iPhone Story

NOTE: This is a post brought to you by Absolute LoJack. The Contest part is over. All opinions on software are those of Geekazine. Last week I announced a contest and talked about going #DigitallyDark for the Absolute LoJack Challenge. I have actually had this happen to me, which is a far better story than any “recreation” I could make. That is when I started thinking about better protecting my devices, especially since  I need them to do my job. Remember: A Laptop is stolen every 50 seconds. That laptop could have your vacation or kids photos, tax or other business documents, or even a list of all your passcodes for home and work. Worse yet, Consumer Reports states that 1.6 million smart phones were stolen. 100 devices stolen in 60 seconds! Some of them were NOT from cherry pickers (those who grab phones sitting on a table or bar). Some...

iStopMotion by Boinx – Create Stop Motion Videos

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSStop motion is an art that some excel in. Claymation and LEGO motion are both types of Stop motion video. Movies like Wallace and Grommet and Chicken Run use this technique. Now you can, too! A couple weeks ago, Boinx software sent me the iStopMotion software to play with on my Mac and iPad. I am not a stop motion expert by any means, but this software made is easy to create my own videos and animated GIFs. Advantages of iStopMotion The ghost images show you where your items were so adjustments can be made. You can load an audio track so the stop motion can sync with it. You can even load in a video to create a stop motion version. Imagine re-creating Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer with this software! You can also put up a chromakey background to put your...

Roku Stick: Now on Available for MHL Compliant TVs – CES 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSMobile High-Definition Link. That is what an MHL port is. It looks like an HDMI port but MHL does more. For example, it can power small devices like the Roku Streaming Stick. An MHL port in a MHL compliant TV is indicated with a purple enclosure. Roku has utilized this port to take the Set top box out of the equation. No more cables and the stick gets powered through the TV. You do get the power of Roku’s 700 channels, games and more through this small stick. When TV shopping, look for the “Roku compliant” or “MHL Ready” stickers. You can then shop between those models.
