Did the Geekazine 2008 Predictions Come True? 0

Did the Geekazine 2008 Predictions Come True?

Wow. It was about a year ago I asked for people to send in thoughts as to what to expect in 2008. I also made some Technology predictions. But the real question was – How far off was I? This is actually part 1 of a 2-part story. This first part reviews the predictions I made last year and how far off I was. Part 2 will have this years predictions, including predictions from CEO’s CTO’s TechPodcasters and even a Psychic. So without any further ado, let’s pick apart my idiocy from last year: OLPC will have some growing pains. The first part of OLPC will be the easiest. Maintaining the machines will be the trick. Microsoft coming onboard will muddy the water, but they might be able to do things like offer a better support network to third world countries.

December 16th 1988, Kevin Mitnick is charged for breaking into and stealing software from DEC. He also gained control of MCI codes in England and LA. Mitnick became a martr for some computer geeks as he bucked the system in ways people were unsuseptable to .  My personal favorite is how he got free pizza. Other events that happened this week – Suspenders were patented by Mark Twain. Microsoft stops supporting IE for the Mac. There was a lot of controversy over this issue at the time – whether an item that is pretty volitile should be regulated and monitored more closely. It was then discovered…. well, you’ll have to listen to the Quickcast to find out what happened next. Also, Microsoft is first spoken of, Fortran 2003 is released, Ken Jennings looses, Roxio buys Napster and so much more on the Quickcast.

Love or Hate the iPhone – Where Do You Stand? 1

Love or Hate the iPhone – Where Do You Stand?

It’s been a year and a few months since the first iPhone was sold. Since the release of the 3G model, I’ve been seeing people with iPhones I would have never expected have one. The iPhone has brought up a new way to use the internet, the phone and a computer. Apple is under a lot of scrutiny: AT&T being the sole carrier, the Apps store program take downs and the 3G services being poor. Yet the iPhone still is the 2nd best selling phone behind the Motorola RAZR. Apple itself is set to continue through these tough times. There has been a lot of good and bad said about the iPhone. I have seen a lot of Forum posts, even more twitters and more. I decided to go ahead and ask a small group of people over at Help A Reporter what their thoughts were. I asked...

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThis week we have a lot of great history, including the event on Oct. 28th, 1955. William Gates III came into this world. Of course we all know him as the funny man in those Seinfeld commercials. However, he ran a little ole company we like to call “Micro.. Micro..” Wait. What is that called again? Interestingly enough 30 years later (1985), Bill Gates put Microsoft up for IPO. Other cool history notes – the DMCA is signed, the first Ball Point Pen becomes available and OpenSocial.

Microsoft Ads – Poll 0

Microsoft Ads – Poll

Microsoft is making the shift from the Seinfeld – Gates ads to something a little different. Bottom line is Microsoft is creating an Ad campain to let people know that Vista is the way to go. But is it really – would you be better off with a Mac? The “Real Life PC” will be part of the new ads. Microsoft will ad emails on the screen, including Bill Gates (which I already sent one off). The idea is to have the stellar ad that will change the masses ideals. [poll=19] Does a computer ad sway you? Will the new Microsoft ads change your thinking? Of course we did a parody last week of the Seinfeld Ads. We poked fun at it. Ads can change the way someone looks at a product. Unfortunately, most people see the ads and it actually sways their decision. Then again, they just...

History of Apple: Goodbye Steve Jobs, Hello Steve Jobs. 0

History of Apple: Goodbye Steve Jobs, Hello Steve Jobs.

It’s interesting to see the irony in life. You win, you lose. It’s like rain on your wedding day…. Steve Jobs was seeing a bit of resistance from Apple in 1985. By May, Steve was in an internal struggle for CEO against John Sculley. Ultimately, Apple agreed and Steve stepped down as CEO of the Apple Mac division. 4 months later, Steve decided to leave Apple to start NeXt – a new computer company. The NeXt OS was released in 1989 and the NeXtstation and NeXtCube in 1990. Jobs built it into a decent powerhouse while Apple continued to struggle. Ultimately in 1997, NeXt was purchased by Apple for $429 million. They got not only the NeXtSTEP Operating System, but they also got Steve Jobs as a consultant. However, this came to Steve Job’s advantage as in July 1997. CEO Gil Amelio was ousted and Steve Jobs took...
