Is Hulu Live TV Worth the $40 a Month? I Install on Different Platforms to Test

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSTVoIP (Television over IP) is really gaining momentum. So much that your cable company might be your Internet provider only and you’ll have many options to choose from. Hulu wants to be one of those to deliver live tv, and they put together a great plan so you can start watching right away. It does come with some limitations, though. What is Hulu Live TV? Hulu.com has added 55 channels which you can stream at any time from your devices at home. Starting at $39.99, you will get favorite cable channels from AMC to USA. In some locations, you will also get local stations. The channel lineup is dependent on where you live, so check with the channel lineup in your zip code. Amazon Fire TV Stick vs. Fire TV: A Two TV Solution Under $200

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSEarlier this year Amazon announced the FireTV – a competitor to the Roku and Apple TV. Doubling the specs of both devices, this became my goto choice for over the top television. Now, Amazon has come out with their lower cost version in the Fire TV Stick – mostly to compete with Chromecast and Roku Stick. This $40 device plugs right into your HDMI port in the TV, with a combined power USB cable which – depending on the TV you own – can be powered right through the USB port for a cord-free TV. Before we accellerate on the subject: keep in mind you DO NOT need an Amazon Prime subscription to own or use Fire TV. It does enhance the experience with more content. You can easily just run Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and other apps on Fire TV but...

A More In-Depth Look at Amazon FireTV

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Lots of great stuff this week as I prepare for NYC and TechCrunch Disrupt. Finishing up the NAB videos this week. Also catching up on some products I had in the wings for a couple months. The studio is getting a spring cleaning so it may look a little different. My office is a mess with boxes and gear I set to the side. I can barely walk through the room anymore! Still waiting on the Aereo vs ABC supreme court ruling. I’ll keep you updated if anything changes. TWIGG was awesome last night but I am having a hard time trying to really understand Google Hangouts. The service took my microphone sound and clipped it. Since I can’t hear my own voice, I had no idea until it posted. I’ll have it fixed by next show. Thanks to all that...

Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast – the Throwdown II

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSLast year when the Chromecast came out, I wanted to highlight the pros and cons of the top set top box devices. That included the Apple TV and Roku. What I called the Throwdown. Yesterday, Amazon announced their entry into the streaming box market. Their set top box made a big splash with the community. Faster than the other media boxes, the Fire TV also plans to compete with the gaming market and an additional wireless controller system. Therefore, I had to bring the competitors back for… The Set Top Box Throwdown II Amazon Fire TV If you have an Amazon Prime account and want to use it more, this box is for you. The Fire TV is  the larger of the four – at 4.5 inches by 4.5 inches. Inside the box is a Snapdragon quad-core processor – just like...

Roku Streaming Stick, WWE Network at SXSW 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI caught up with Roku in their streaming lounge where WWE Hall of Famer Sgt. Slaughter was going to be there later in the day. The hall was decked out with WWE merchandise and videos of classic matches on each of the Roku machines. I got to talk with Kristin about Roku’s newest device – the streaming media stick. This is an HDMI stick which allows you to watch your favorite channels without having a box under the TV. The stick is similar to the Roku 1 – no gaming and no headphone jack – but the stick will have Youtube and the ability to cast videos from your mobile device to your Roku. Also, the smaller size connects and only needs a USB or wall jack to power the device. Roku Streaming Stick will be available soon, pre-orders are happening...

Netflix courts Cable. Roku, Apple TV Should do the Same?

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Monday was a long but productive day. At Midnight, we launched the TPN at CES crowdfund – a crowdfund project for our trip out to CES. I talk about why we need it. Last night on TWIGG.TV we talked with Kathi Browne about Google Glass and Healthcare. It was a great hour worth of content about what the medical profession is planning for Glass. I’m also in the hunt for a new computer. Roku Stick: Now on Available for MHL Compliant TVs – CES 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSMobile High-Definition Link. That is what an MHL port is. It looks like an HDMI port but MHL does more. For example, it can power small devices like the Roku Streaming Stick. An MHL port in a MHL compliant TV is indicated with a purple enclosure. Roku has utilized this port to take the Set top box out of the equation. No more cables and the stick gets powered through the TV. You do get the power of Roku’s 700 channels, games and more through this small stick. When TV shopping, look for the “Roku compliant” or “MHL Ready” stickers. You can then shop between those models. Best part of Roku – Price point is still $100. It comes with remote or you can use the iOS Roku app to change channels.   TPN Interview by Andy McCaskey of SDRNews.com [cessponsor] Also Check...

Why I Cancelled Netflix and Switched to Amazon Prime

It’s really simple. I was tired of not seeing anything new. I was frustrated in looking at the new releases section on my Roku, and seeing Rescue Me there for the last 6 months. I was annoyed at playing the game “Find a movie I really want to watch”. Fact is, I stopped going to Netflix 3 weeks ago. Crackle.com has more variety than Netflix, and it’s free! I was watching more of my HuluPlus subscription, also. It became very apparent to me that I didn’t watch this service anymore. So I finally ditched it.

Roku: New Roku HDMI Stick Makes Smart TVs – #CES 2012

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIn this world of over-the-top television, there are a lot of different choices. If your TV does not have a “smart” feature, you end up having to purchase a third-party solution. And with many boxes to choose from, it’s a tough decision at times. However, Roku is working to make that decision very straightforward. At CES, Roku debuted their Roku streaming stick. Ed from Roku joins Todd in showing off this little dongle that connects up to your HDMI port on your TV. Since the Roku stick plugs directly into the HDMI port, there is no need for extra cables, or even a power cable. Therefore, if you have your TV mounted to a wall, there are no extra ugly cables to go with it. Further, this new Roku connects wirelessly (just like the previous versions), so you can stream your...

Geekazine on WISC-TV Talking Cyber Monday Deals

This morning I was on WISC-TV 3 for News 3 This Morning. I talked about Cyber Monday deals for a 3 minute segment at 6:20 am. Charolette Deleste interviewed me for this segment. We started out talking about the history of Cyber Monday. Simply put – 10 years ago, with a lot of homes not having a good internet connection, and a big bulky computer in the public area – Not to mention the kids running around so you can’t shop for their gifts – most people reverted to Monday at lunch time to do their shopping. However, this year we saw a jump in sales because retailers used the whole weekend to give deals. Add to that, a 14% increase in people using their mobile devices to make purchases this weekend, they had a great Black Friday weekend. So now Cyber Monday is here. Charolette asked which websites...
