Twitter’s IPO: Is it Facebook IPO all Over Again? Geek Smack! 6th Anniversary Episode

Subscribe: iTunes | Android | RSS 6th anniversary of the podcast is upon us! I started this show back in 2007 – named “The Show”. Fourth pair of Google Glass is going back to Google. This time, the camera died. I talk about it on TWIGG. My EmpireAvenue account is at 112 but more interesting is the numbers watching and listening increased. Crowdfund for CES is looking great – we’re planning T-shirts for backer levels. Getting closer to launching the new website to bring more validation to podcasts. I’ve been trying out StreetJelly in the last week – a website where you can listen to musicians playing live. You can even tip them tokens. I spent about 10 hours over the weekend working on my acoustic show once again. Mobile Games on the Rise 0

Mobile Gaming on the Rise, Big Business for Some [Infographic]

I talk about them on my show iPad365. You might have a few of them on your smartphone or tablet. They might be simple games – sliding a wood block around – to complex games that take you to new worlds to destroy beasts. They could even just connect you with others to show your mental capacities. These are the games of the mobile device. And they are proving to become big business for some. Companies like Zynga grow on the mobile gaming platform. They produce games that are free, and paid games. Usually, the free games come with in-app upgrades. Sometimes to turn off the iAds, other times to add levels, get more power-ups so you can do something a little faster, and more. This has all added up to big dollars for some. Just to the point that more people play games on their device than...

Careverge: A Social Approach To Health – CES 2012

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSEngaging people for good health can be a tough job. Careverge  is helping with this. Careverge can help as a one-stop health and well-being site. Instead of buying something, they bring together fitness, health and support in one place. Social networking is the way people can engage. Health care should be no different. They have a recommendation engine that will get people to do things. People want to be talked to as an individual, as Henry said. You can compete with other people on your health.  You can then match your goals, and encourage others to do the same with healthy competition. Careverge is free to use for consumers. There are corporate memberships available, too. Interview by Jamie Davies of the MedicCast and the Nursing Show. [cessponsor]

Social Media Breakfast Madison 4-20-11: Jacob Harlow, Century House

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSIn the first half of the Social Media House – Madison, Jacob Harlow from Century House talks about how his business uses social media. He talks about making the experience personal and not being a “bot” on your Twitter or Facebook. Don’t worry about getting lots of followers, just the ones that give or bring you business. During the video, you will see shots of the Century House showroom. Social Media Breakfast is a non-profit organization with focus on educating people on networking. More than just social networking, it’s a morning meeting (usually around 7:30 am) to talk about how you can increase business using different social means. The video was shot looking at a window, which doesn’t always make for best picture.

Did the 3rd Annual Geekazine and Friends 2010 Predictions Come True? 0

Did the 3rd Annual Geekazine and Friends 2010 Predictions Come True?

It’s that time again. Time to get out the Eggnog and sing holiday carols. Time to put up lights and bells. Time to run to the store and return that gift so you can get the loot. More important, it’s time to see if the crew was correct in their 2010 predictions. For 4 years, Geekazine has been asking people to put on their turbans and decipher what is going to happen in the coming year. The last few sessions have been pretty interesting. Let’s see what happened with 2010’s predictions. And yes, we will be putting together a list for 2011. Therefore, if you would like, feel free to email your predictions to me. Just like the 2009 predictions. In 2010, I think corporate collaboration and knowledge management will continue to grow as departmental installs morph into enterprise-wide usage. Once departments see the true value of enterprise 2.0 efforts,...

Internal Social Networks with Brainpark – 4G World 0

Internal Social Networks with Brainpark – 4G World

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSSome companies embrace open social networking. Some decide to ban it. Others really have no choice – they must keep it off the network for legal reasons. But what if you can have a privatized social network in your company that actually helps you? Step in Brainpark Brainpark is a social network and an internal helpdesk. It’s an answer queue and a company directory. Connecting with Outlook, it also makes searching for employees easily. Don’t expect pictures of that great party the other night. Don’t expect relationship statuses. Don’t expect friending options. DO expect a better communication within your organization. Ask a question, Brainpark will point you in the right direction.

Madison Social Media Club Foursquare Pub Crawl Entertaining, Educational 2

Madison Social Media Club Foursquare Pub Crawl Entertaining, Educational

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | Android | RSSOn Wed, September 29th, 2010, the Madison Social Media Club held their first Foursquare pub crawl. Included were 4 venues that were big Foursquare stops in the Madison area. Logans, State Street Brats, Ian’s Pizza and Barriques. We started by an Intro with Wendy Soucie, followed by a little education of Foursquare and how to obtain badges by Marvic. Then it was off to talk with people, eat, drink and check in. It was an interesting night that was spawned by the social networking application. We were able to see everyone that checked in and added them as friends. I didn’t receive any new badges (because I had most of the ones we could get). I did meet some new peers and talked a lot about Social networking. Ian’s Pizza was the most interesting stop of the group. Between open mic night...

Digital Disinfectant

Digital Disinfectant

New opportunities in the internet world. The Boston Globe tells of consultants who are making a career enhancing and, in some cases, cleaning up, clients’ digital images–images as in PR, not as in pictures: Michael Fertik knows all about how online searches can damage reputations. The 2005 Harvard Law School graduate founded ReputationDefender four years ago because he didn’t like how young people’s online behavior could be permanently recorded on the Internet and haunt them later. “People were losing control of their digital selves, and there was something fundamentally un-American about that,’’ said Fertik, 31. “I don’t think the random product of a Google machine needs to define your life.’’ For a fee that ranges between $10 a month and $1,000 a year, the Redwood City, Calif.-based company works to counteract negative reviews, comments, or blog entries for clients. I found the article fascinating. What offended me about...

Facebook Privacy Fazing 0

Facebook Privacy Fazing

Facebook’s privacy practices have been in the headlines this week, not just in the tech world, but also in the main stream press. The New York Times pointed out that the Facebook privacy policy is longer than the United States Constitution (this is hardly a fair comparison–the U. S. Constitution is remarkably short, shorter than constitutions of most of the individual united states). More to the point, the Times also counted up the settings: The new opt-out settings certainly are complex. Facebook users who hope to make their personal information private should be prepared to spend a lot of time pressing a lot of buttons. To opt out of full disclosure of most information, it is necessary to click through more than 50 privacy buttons, which then require choosing among a total of more than 170 options. The BBC today published a brief but helpful guide to Facebook...

American Journey: Social Networking Road Trip to Maker Faire 0

American Journey: Social Networking Road Trip to Maker Faire

I remember trekking across the country in caravan in 1994. I was in the 1978 Ford Fairmont. The poor thing had a hard time in West Virginia, but we made it to our destination. The caravan was 6 cars, with 20 people going cross-country. I wish we would have had Twitter and other Social Networking tools back then. It would have made the trip more exciting. Today, Ford has announced the American Journey 2.0. Two Ford Fiesta cars with customized applications will embark on what is called “American Journey 2.0”. They will drive from Detroit to California to the Maker Faire. The Ford Cars, nicknamed “A.J.” and “UM” will house three applications: One will allow the car to tweet, just like the Mars Rover did during it’s trek. Follow it at @AJtheFiesta. “We believe this is the first time vehicles will be socially connected through the Internet during...
