Saramonic Camera Audio Mixers and Microphones

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSA couple months ago I purchased the Saramonic Smart Mixer for my phone and have been happy with the results for covering live shows. While at NAB I stopped by the Saramonic booth to find out what other great products they have for my video and audio production on the go. Turns out Saramonic has a lot of great audio solutions – wired and wireless. I started with the SmartMixer 2 channel Audio Mixer Kit for iOS or Android. As I was recording via the device, you can hear how this cuts out background noise to get the interview. I looked at a very interesting microphone for GoPro cameras for $35. They also have lavaliere microphones if you do vlogging or simple on-camera spots. I then went over the large array of DSLR Camera Microphone Pre-Amps, such as the SR-AX101. You can...

Saramonic Smartmix for iPhone, Android, DSLR Camera

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI always try to find a good solution for audio when recording out. When I am portable, I need a rig that has a small footprint but can do much more. When I first saw the Saramonic Smartmix, I thought it could be a great video companion for my smartphone. Yet, it does a lot more. The Smartmix is a microphone preamp that allows you to record up to 3 microphones to your camera or smartphone. The mixer also gives those DSLR cameras a headphone jack so you know what type of sound is coming out. The Unboxing First part of the video is the unboxing, which unveils the main unit, clamp and handle for most Smartphones (iOS or Android), two position-able microphones, mini XLR to XLR adapter cable, and two cables to connect to your smartphone. The Specs: Saramonic Smartmixer...

Audio Technica 8004L vs. Sennheiser MD 46 Long Handled Interview Microphones

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThis video was created with no audio changes. The idea is for you to hear the raw version of each microphone and make your own decision. A few months ago, I compared this Audio Technica vs the SM58 and AT2100 microphones for use in interviews. I got a comment on the YouTube video from CapWKidd asking “What about the Sennheiser MD 46 microphone?” I turned around and tweeted SennheiserUSA, who actually got back to me within 24 hours. They sent me the MD46 long handle microphone. These are two different types of microphones that you can use for getting interviews, capturing speeches or podium announcements, and more. As always, I’ll review each microphone while talking through the microphone. For my receiver, I’ll be using my Sony UWPV6 wireless camera microphone capsule for each, as if I was at a live event....

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIK Multimedia showed off a stereo/mono audio device for your iOS device that allows for cleaner audio in the iRig Mic Field. Perfect when capturing that song you love at a concert or even when capturing video of your kids playing outside. The iRig Mic Field connects to the lightning jack of your iOS device. With the iRig Recorder, you can capture and edit your audio easily. Turn the Field to a landscape mode and record in stereo. Flip it the other way for a mono recording. The lighting plug allows for digital recording of up to 24-bit with a 44.1/48 kHz sampling rate. The mic contains two condenser capsules that have a 115 dB SPL rating and built in low-noise preamp. TASCAM DR-44WL Four Track Recorder with iPhone, Android Remote

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile at the International CES 2015, I got to sit down with Jeff Laity of TASCAM to learn about new products coming soon. A fan of TASCAM recorders for many years (I still have my TASCAM 4-track tape recorder in the basement) and owner of the DR-60D, I was excited to learn about the DR-44WL and other new recorders coming out. TASCAM DR-22WL and 44WL Jeff showed off the DR-44WL in the video. This is a 4 track recorder with 2 XLR inputs, XY pattern microphone and dual recording feature so you can record a high-quality .WAV file and a lower quality audio file which could be transferred quickly to the web. Both devices handle sound pressure up to 132dB and reduce noise if you are holding the recorder in your hand with cradled shock mounts. The Microphone preamp in the...

Podcast Microphones: Audio-Technica ATR2100 vs. IK Multimedia iRig mic HD

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWe have another podcast microphone showdown as I look at two USB podcast mics that you can use for recording audio. Audio-Technica’s popular ATR2100 USB/XLR hybrid microphone and IK Multimedia’s iRig Mic HD USB/iPad microphone. I have pitted the 2100 against the 2500 but now we’re looking at podcast microphone vs. podcast microphone. You can use these microphones with all iOS, Mac and PC software. These microphones will not work on an Android phone without 3rd party adapters. IK Multimedia iRig Mic HD This is a Condenser microphone only in USB format. The micro USB cord is interchangable with USB, iOS 30-pin and lightning cables. One side of the microphone is a db volume dial and the other is an indicator light. The light is blue during passive sound states, green when signal is coming through and red if the signal is clipping. The...

Zoom H6 Handy High Resolution Audio Recording Device – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI got to see some great recording devices for getting that interview or keynote recorded. One in particular – the Zoom H6 Handy Recorder – is a multi-function recorder that I could use to mic a 6 person interview, a room for an event, a 2-3 person band, and more. The H6 is designed for everyone – musicians to journalists – videographers to sound professionals that don’t want to carry the whole studio with them. The H6 has multiple attachments along with the 4 XLR/TRS inputs. The Zoom H6 can track 6 channels for many different options. At the top is an attachment for a XY microphone, boom mic (with dead cat) or a mid/size capsule for up-close interviews. The unit is fairly small for what it can do. Weighing in at less than 10 ounces you will be able to...

Day 4: Microphones, Sliders, Recorders – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSFinal day at NAB. This is my chance to get around and catch the interviews I missed before. Especially for those audio podcasters out there. I’m intrigued how radio broadcasting is further from audio podcasting. Sure, you can get a radio mixer for a podcast but it would be a little overkill. Still, there are some who like sliders over dials – and are willing to spring for the good stuff if it makes their podcasts better. Omnirax Broadcast Furniture I spent some time talking with Phillip of Omnirax – a company that creates furniture for the broadcaster. We talked about how a podcaster, videocaster, or even voice-over artists could use a well organized desk setup for their recordings. The desk I was at felt good to sit at and record. I was able to get up to the microphone and...
