16 Tech Innovations that didn’t quite stick

You might remember the products. You might remember the hype. Then, you are tooling down highway 41 years later and all of a sudden you think to yourself – “Hey, whatever happened to…” Failed ideas. Maybe it was a great idea, but wasn’t made right, or design errors brought it down. Maybe it was just a bad product. Well, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and see if we cannot repeat these errors again. Oh yeah, why 16? Well because we could. The Computer Watch: Whether it was the Ruputer, the MSN Direct ‘Smart’ Watches, the Timex Data Link Watch or another gadget watch – BTW – I remember having a “Transformers watch”. It was awesome! Still, the Dick Tracey style communication watches, the “Computer on a wrist”, never really hit it off. I even remember a watch that gave you directions. You would put in the...

BYOC – Personal Computer As a Corporate Machine?

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSAs a consultant, I use my own equipment all the time. When I get to a specific client, sometimes I am asked to sign a waiver that states I will not take company data. I sign it because I am not going to ruin any relationship by walking out with secrets or customer lists. Data nowadays can be controlled. We at the Quickcast have talked about how that can happen many a time. However, the most important thing in a work environment is to make sure the data stays within the company – even after a person has left. Citrix Systems has given  Employees a bonus payment to buy their own laptop for corporate use. While it does give advantage, could the company lose control of the data? Do We Need Comcast to Cap Bandwidth Usage? 0

Do We Need Comcast to Cap Bandwidth Usage?

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIt would be interesting to see how much bandwidth I go through a month. Uploading shows, ustream channel, downloading software updates and media content.  All of it legally. There are some that decide to use their internet connection without abandon. They download movies, music and computer programs without legally paying for it. I have seen many downloading 4 to 5 items at a time, which at gigabytes at a pop, it’s a lot of data that passes through. And with programs like bittorrent, not only does it download the items, but it turns your computer into a “Seed” in which others can use to pull from. Comcast is working on a model to cap bandwidth per month. For some it won’t be noticeable. For the internet Zealot, they might find it tougher to work and...

WiFi Everywhere – Even at State Parks? 1

WiFi Everywhere – Even at State Parks?

I have 5 great spots I go to if I need to get out of the house, get something to eat or drink and surf the web. Yes, 2 of those spots serve alcohol, but it’s not about the drinking. It’s all about getting out of the house and working. Of course, WiFi is important to only a select few that like to take their laptops out and work or surf while having a bite to eat. With more people switching to mobile devices – whether a laptop, smartphone or Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) – people want to know where they can go to get connected. Even if it means just getting directions, checking over the hours of a store you want to visit, or just checking your email – from home or the office.
