HP Pavilion x2 is a Laptop, Tablet, Kiosk and More

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSHP calls it their most versatile detachable PC. It’s a laptop that easily converts to a tablet and even a table tent for kiosk options. The folks at HP gave me one to play with and although I am getting compensated for this review, the review itself is my own opinion. So let’s get started with the specs, then see if this machine is worth the sub-$500 price tag. Pavilion x2 12 inch comes in 2 models – with an Intel ATOM x5 series processor and Intel Core M – thier 6th generation processor. The machine I have is the Intel core m3 at 1.51 GHz, 100 MHz Bus, 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage supplied by Samsung. Windows 10 64-bit home is on the machine and it can be configured for PC or tablet mode depending on what...

7 Inch $50 Tablet Throwdown: Amazon Fire, RCA Voyager, ProScan 7

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSGood tablets are getting more affordable and very useful. Amazon launched the Fire 7 inch tablet in their line of Fire products. While a great tablet, I had to wonder how this stacked up to other $50 7 inch tablets. Therefore I found two tablets you might see during your holiday shopping. The RCA Voyager tablet from Walmart and the ProScan tablet which you can find in many different stores. Keep in mind these are not HD resolution tablets and will show slower results than a Fire HD or iPad Air. Nonetheless, these affordable tablets could become second tablets for some and replace laptops for others. Amazon Fire 7 Inch Tablet The Fire 7 inch has a screen resolution of 1024×600 (also known as WSVGA). The Fire is a Quad-Core ARM Cortex A7 processor at 1.3 GHz, and a Mali-450 GPU....

$35 Indian Tablet? Not Really 1

$35 Indian Tablet? Not Really

No, it’s not going to be on sale for $35.00. The Guardian reports that the Indian Ministry of Education has announced a “laptop” for students at a cost of $35 dollars. There is short demonstration video at the link. The $35 refers to the cost of the components, not to a price point, a detail that a lot of news sites seem to have overlooked. The story quotes India’s human resource development minister, Kapil Sibal, as saying: “We have reached a [developmental] stage that today, the motherboard, its chip, the processing, connectivity, all of them cumulatively cost around $35, including memory, display, everything,” he told a news conference in New Delhi. The Guardian story includes no speculation as to the final retail cost. Indeed, as this is a project of the Ministry of Education designed for students, there may well be no plans to make it commercially available....

Windows 7 Too Big To Be Taken in Tablet Form 2

Windows 7 Too Big To Be Taken in Tablet Form

Bloomberg reports that it will be a while before a Windows 7 tablet becomes feasible. The target for a tablet compatible version of the OS is the last quarter of this year. iPad sales have manufacturers wanting to jump on the tablet bandwagon, but Windows is just too much of a resource hog. The iPad’s success caught much of the PC industry by surprise. Within two months of the April 3 release, Apple sold 2 million iPads — more than IDC expected for the entire tablet industry in 2010. To catch up, Dell and Hewlett-Packard are turning to Google Inc.’s Android operating system. Taiwanese manufacturers that build most of the world’s PCs said they’re dissatisfied with Microsoft’s current lineup. “We don’t have any choice for now,” said Joseph Hsu, chairman and president of Taipei-based manufacturer Micro-Star International Co., a maker of laptops and computer parts. Windows 7 is...

Jeffrey posted his prediction that the tablet computer hoopla will turn out to be just that–hoopla–last week. As I mentioned in a comment to his post, tablets have been around for a long time in various forms. So why don’t we see more persons using them? I do not think it’s because the market is waiting for a break-through product. I think it’s because most persons just don’t care. That something is technologically possible does not make it desirable.
