Death of The Crunchies

Death of The Crunchies

At the TechCrunch Winter Party that took place in San Francisco last week, there was a pinata bashing that signified the death of the much maligned awards show, The Crunchies, which after a decade of highs and lows has finally been shuttered by Verizon, TechCrunch’s new parent company. Launched in 2007 by legendary TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington, the show’s mission was to showcase the best in tech, but it soon became mired in controversy for becoming an over-the-top, glitzy, star-studded affair that repeatedly celebrated the same industry heavyweights: Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Google/Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer, Uber’s Travis Kalanick, Salesforce’s Marc Benioff, Snapchat’s Evan Spiegel. Broad, overreaching categories like Best App, Best Startup, Best Founder seemed to exclude many who were toiling away, revolutionizing the industry. “They had an award for ‘Best VC’ which pretty much says it all right there,” recalled BitTorrent Founder Bram Cohen. BitTorrent’s...

Sony HT-Z9F Sound Bar is Wireless, 4k HDR 3.1 Sound

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSSony showed off the Sony HT-Z9F Sound Bar at CES this year. This sound bar promises total immersion, with exceptional realism, which is exactly what we want in a sound bar. We want to become a part of the movie we are watching and audio is a big part of that. This 3.1ch Dolby Atmos/DTS:X soundbar still has the great horizontal sound engine from previous models, but Sony has added the new Vertical Surround Engine in a soundbar that will fit perfectly in your home. The horizontal engine delivers that virtual sound you already know, while the vertical engine will deliver still richer sounds. Think height, like rain falling, maybe an explosion from up high. This is accomplished with two front speakers facing up. Everything you watch will be in maximum 7.1.2ch sound thanks to digital signal processing that converts any audio...

Roadie Bass Prototype, Roadie 2 Tuner for Guitar

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI sat down with the folks at Roadie to check out their new guitar tuners at NAMM 2018. Roadie 2, which is available now, is the update to their popular guitar / mandolin / ukulele tuner. They were also showing off a prototype for the new Roadie Bass, which will give low string musicians a tuner for quick fixes. How the Roadie Tuner Works Simply choose the string, what you want it to tune to (such as an Open E guitar), then go through the strings by placing the device on the tuning nut. When you hit the string, the tuner will determine the note, and make adjustments. Once you’ve tuned up all strings, you can put it back in it’s carrying pouch to play. Roadie 2 and Roadie Bass are $129 each, with the Roadie Bass available later this year....

Skully AR Helmets Makes it Right Again With New Ownership

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS It’s been a bit of a wild ride for Skully. If you have been following the troubled saga, you know that they failed to deliver on IndieGoGo crowdfunding promises. There were delays, missed shipping deadlines and hurt backers. For a while many thought that the company was dead. Well, things have been happening behind the scenes and it looks like the company has plenty of life left in it. What Happened at Skully The company has some new owners who are determined to steer things right. Now known as Skully Technologies, the assets of Skully, Inc. have been acquired by Ivan Contreras and Rafael Contreras, who are successful businessmen known for reinvigorating technology companies. This all means that development of its AI-guided, AR-enabled motorcycle helmets resumed. They plan to ship by this summer in fact. It has been a roller...

The Robots Uprise at CES 2018: Yamaha MOTOROiD and UBTech Stormtrooper

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSRobots have been a part of CES for a long time. This year, they got their own wing in South Hall to show off all the cool things they can do. From utility to sport, and even getting you a beer at the end of the day. You’d be surprised how many people have robots in their homes already. Maybe it’s a vacuum. It could be that stationary personal assistant you call Alexa, Google, or Siri. So why not embrace these cool robots as well… Omron Plays Ping Pong It’s simply a concept, as Omron is not in the business of making ping pong table robots. Still, it was cool to see them serve, and react to oncoming ping pongs. Omron does create many different types of autonomous devices, mostly for the workplace – Agriculture, Manufacturing, Health care, and mobility. Still, pitting...

Meet Qoobo: A Headless Robotic Pillow Pet that Wags its Tail When you Cuddle it

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSDo you live alone in a place that doesn’t allow pets? Maybe you grew up with a cat or dog that cuddled up on your lap, wagged it’s tail, and fell asleep – and you miss that interaction. Well fear not, because Qoobo will help you with that. What is Qoobo Qoobo is an animatronic pillow that wags it’s tail when you give it attention. Whether from stroking or patting, Qoobo will react to your movement with it’s own. As Martine Paris talked with Shunsuke Aoki about this pet, we learned it was from Yukai Engineering – the same team that gave people “cat ears” that reacted to brain waves. This is a part in a long line of robotic dolls, hangers that interact, and other unique devices. How to Get Qoobo This is currently a project that you can pre-order...

Sony FutureLab Program N Prototype Unboxing

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile at SXSW, I stopped by Sony’s Wow Experience, where I got to see the Program N headset at it’s next phase. Sony was looking for testers of this prototype (along with future items), and I was all too eager to join. For that, I got the product right on site. What is FutureLab Program Sony FutureLab is an R&D division to gain real-use feedback. Instead of having the programmers and employees use the prototypes, they put them out in the wild to see what the population thinks. Currently, there are two prototypes out there. N – the headset I have, and T – an interactive table. What is Program N I am guessing N stands for Nigel – the assistant that comes through this wearable device. The case completely protects conceals the wearable really well. This device comes with two...

I got to talk with Jason Megit of AMD about their use of Thunderbolt 3 in their systems, but we also talked about Linux use and their newest line of video graphics cards in AMD Vega. AMD and Thunderbolt 3 Even though Thunderbolt is an Intel technology, it’s also a standard for all to use. That is why you will see Thunderbolt 3 in AMD laptops as well. After all, everyone needs the 40 GB data transfer, ability to connect dual 4K monitors and even a way to power the laptop. AMD with Linux on Thunderbolt 3 A lot of Linux systems and STEAM game systems also will benefit from the use of Thunderbolt 3. With the use of AMD’s Crimson drivers, you will be able to utilize your machine and the...

Rosewill SP 7260 Computer Speakers for Movies, Music, Gaming

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIf you are looking for a sub-$100 set of stereo speakers for gaming, movies, or music, the Rosewill SP-7260 speakers will fit the job. These 60 Watt speakers have a range of 60 Hz – 20 kHz to capture a full range of sound. I tested these speakers in multiple capacities – as the replacement speakers at the TV and in the studio for music and podcasting. My results were a decent 4 ohm speaker for your listening needs. One issue I found with the speaker was the “wood case”. Inside I saw press board, over an oak board they had in the graphic. While pressboard does also give a fuller sound over plastic casing, I was a little disappointing over this feature that Rosewill mentioned. Another issue was the 6 foot 4-pin cable used to patch speakers together. While it...

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSGoing to Disneyland is an experience, so keeping the positive vibe is key. You will be taking lots of photos and video, along with running around the park all day. No placed to charge, no places to really relax for after the hour or more wait, you have a 10 minute ride and it’s off to the next attraction. Having some key tech gear to keep you going really helps. I brought a few items with me to Disneyland that kept me going all day. Here are what I recommend you should have. Tough Tested Rugged Weatherproof Charger With 8000 mAh inside, a fully charged Tough Tested USB charger is a great addition to your gear. It might be a little bulky, but it’s worth it’s weight at 10 AM when you need to charge your phone back up for the...

Rowkin Bit Charge Wireless Headphones

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWith the iPhone 7’s loss of headphone jack, you might be looking at wireless headphones for your music or movie listening needs. While I was on travel last week, I checked out the Rowkin Bit Charge. This is a Bluetooth headset that will give you about 2 hours of music and recharge in an hour. I can even use this for phone calls and as a headset microphone. While the latency won’t let you create music in Garageband, it will let you listen to music and watch TV or movies without issue. Pairing the headset is easy and it can pair with multiple items. The headset also has a microphone, so it can be used to answer phone calls, talk to Siri, or even record on Facebook Live, YouTube, Periscope and more. I recorded a couple Instagram stories using the headset...

Does the Blackberry PRIV Give You the Blackberry Experience?

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSBlackberry phones were popular because they were meant for business. Their security features were better than any other phone at the time. Some CEO’s would lose their minds if they didn’t have it. Even President Obama had to have a Blackberry over an iPhone 10 years ago. Fast forward to today. Blackberry broke down and created the Android version called PRIV, hoping it would bring those CEOs back. I got this phone from my friends at Verizon Wireless to find out if they accomplished the job. Let’s look at the specs. This is an Android phone running the Qualcomm 8992 Snapdragon 808 Heza-Core processor at 64-bit. An Adreno 418 GPU at 600 mHz and 32 GB Flash memory, upgradable to 2 TB. The phone runs a display of 2560×1440 – or 1440p. The screen size is 5.4″ and has a 24-bit...

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Sale for $4.99 (£2.49)

As part of the Steam Summer Sale, one of the huge deals of the promotion is Skyrim.  The game is normally £9.99 but has been reduced to £2.49($4.99). At the time of publishing, there is only one hour left on this deal. So if you’ve been waiting for a good discount on this game, then now is the best time to jump on it. And jump on it now because this is a great game with a metascore of 94/100. For the record, I never actually played Skyrim. I wanted to do so but could not afford the hefty price tag when the game came out. However, now that the game is at a superb discount, I have already pulled the trigger. If this metascore rating is anything to go by, then it clearly is a great game and one you should download for PC. In case if...

Game Sale Alert: Steam’s 2014 Summer Sale is Live

It’s that time of the year again folks. Valve has started it’s annual Steam Summer sale as of today. As of today, a lot of games on the Steam Store are going to be heavily discounted. There will be some daily deals which last for 24 hours, flash deals which last for up to half a day and deals voted for by the steam community. There will be new deals every single day. For me, the best deals to be had on day one are Mirror’s Edge(£2.45), Skyrim(£4.99) and The Witcher 2(£2.99). With new deals every day, it’s important to keep an eye out to see if you find a game you like on sale. If you see game that you like, jump on it! There is a good chance that you won’t see a good deal like this one on steam until around Christmas time. Some these...
