Microsoft Hits, then Misses Mark with KIN 1

Microsoft Hits, then Misses Mark with KIN

Microsoft announces a semi-Smartphone – Bonus! Microsoft announces great pricing – Bonus! Then Microsoft gives the phone to Verizon…. ONLY. Then, Verizon puts a high price on the plan. What were they thinking? The Good Let’s start with the first part – Microsoft comes out with a phone for “the rest of us”. You can get to your facebook, Twitter and email without having a full-fledged smartphone. The Microsoft KIN will have a price of $50 and $100. While I wouldn’t get a phone like that, I do know some that would. All some do is go up on those social network sites. They don’t need the iBeer, or any other application. It also keeps the price of the phone low – $50 vs. $199. The Bad I don’t understand the next part. Microsoft unveils this great idea in the mid-grade market, then tells everyone it’s only on...

Bleem! Re-Emerges with Bleem! 360 and Bleem! PS3 Emulators for PC, Mac and iPad

Edititor’s Note 4-01-2010 20:48:00: **This story is not true. It was part of Geekazine’s Annual April Fools Joke 2010** I have to admit, back in 1999, I had a copy of Bleem! With a quick burn of a Playstation disc and my trusty PS – USB controller, I could play a lot of Playstation games from my computer, which worked well if someone else was watching TV. When the company went bankrupt, I was saddened, but moved on with my life. Now that has all changed. According to an undisclosed source, new contracts have been created and Bleem! will begin producing once again for not only the Bleem! for Playstation, PS2 and PS3, but also for the Bleem! for XBOX 360! Further, contract negotiations for Nintendo Wii are expected to be complete by July 1. The new emulator also has a new twist: It will be available for not...

Status Update: “Busted”–FBI Uses Social Networking 0

Status Update: “Busted”–FBI Uses Social Networking

This really should come as no surprise: the Guardian reports that FBI agents have been going undercover on Facebook and other social networking sites looking for criminals. And they’ve been finding them. This doesn’t refer to persons promoting bogus FB apps designed to steal identities. They are finding criminals who maintain profiles, sometimes public profiles, under their real names with photographs of their real faces: Law enforcement agencies have long used internet chatrooms to lure child pornography traffickers and suspected sex predators and with a warrant, can seize suspects and defendants’ email records. But Facebook, MySpace and other social networking sites provide a wealth of additional information, in photographs, status updates and friend lists. In many cases, the information is publicly accessible. In a section entitled “utility in criminal cases”, the document says agents can scan suspects’ profiles to establish motives, determine a person’s location, and tap into...

You Might Be A Deccabillitweeter – 10 Billionth Twitter Soon

600 tweets a second. That might just jump up a little in the next 18 hours as the Deccabillitweeter will be crowned. What is a Deccabillitweeter? Well that is the person who will make the 10 Billionth Twitter. I know I will be trying for that. Therefore, you will see me tweet all day tomorrow. 1st tweet: Got out of bed. 2nd tweet: Jumped in shower 3rd tweet: showering. 4th Tweet: still showering… I looked, but couldn’t find out who the 1 billionth tweet was. All I know is it happened around Nov. 10, 2008. The 5 Billionth Twitter was sent by Robin Slone with the post “Oh lord”. He hit enter before he could finish it with “…it’s hard to be humble, when you’re perfect in every way…” So what do you give a Deccabillitweeter? Well if it’s anything like an anniversary, it’s tin/aluminum or Diamond. So would...

Madison Wisconsin Social Media Club Kickoff Party 1

Madison Wisconsin Social Media Club Kickoff Party

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSOn Wednesday, the Social Media Club Madison chapter held their first kickoff meet at the Brocach by the Capitol. About 125 were in attendance as the board of directors was introduced. We met one another and learned a lot about how everyone can work together. The sponsors of the event created gift bags for the registered guests. Each table had products and a sign that said either Facebook, Flickr, Twitter or YouTube. You had to sit at each station and write out how you would promote the products on your given Social Network site. However, with the larger turnout, it was more difficult to move around, therefore I am not sure if they got the response they expected for that social game. I went through the crowd and talked to a lot of Social Media and PR people. I ran into...

Google Buzz vs Friend Feed vs Facebook vs Twitter: Who will Replace Who? 1

Google Buzz vs Friend Feed vs Facebook vs Twitter: Who will Replace Who?

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSLast week when Google Buzz came out, all the Social Mediates jumped on board like the last boat of the day starting to leave the dock. Instantly, we saw everyone posting “I am Buzzing”, and others rebuilding their Social Media lists. The big names pretty much dominated the Buzz. But it did become an opportunity for a new name or two to get in there. And – as far as I know – Ashton Kutcher is not on Buzz.. Yet. Two big questions people had about Buzz in the first week – Is Buzz like which Social Media Micro Blogging device, and which one is Buzz going to replace? In this video, we look at Google Buzz, Friend Feed, Twitter and Facebook. Jeffrey talks about what Buzz is close to and gives answers to these two questions. What do you think? Will Buzz replace...

Google Buzz: The Next Generation in Gmail 1

Google Buzz: The Next Generation in Gmail

Well the big news from Google today was Google Buzz. Not to be confused with Yahoo Buzz – which might cause some  friction because they are both social networks. Some even say it’s trying to be Facebook. Google Buzz is GMail in real time. You can add to email in real time. Kinda like Wave does, except it can be on a personal level. It has some Twitter functionality – @geekazine will be recognized. You can even speak in your comments and they will be transcribed. Buzz will also be available for the mobile phone. A little Augemented 2D action – Hit the Nearby option on Google Maps in the phone and find out what others are saying. Geotagged Buzz posts will show you what is being said. Another movie premier killer option right there. Here is where you can see a commercial about Google Buzz. It won’t...

File-Sharing Phishing Scam 0

File-Sharing Phishing Scam

The BBC reports that a phishing scam involving torrents has been uncovered. Their headline implies that it targets Twitter. It doesn’t, not specifically. Twitter seems to have been responsible for revealing it. The way it worked was really quite clever. After “doing some digging” the firm (Twitter) found a network of compromised torrent sites that had been set up with the sole aim of stealing logon information. “It appears that for a number of years, a person has been creating torrent sites that require a login and password as well as creating forums set up for torrent site usage and then selling these purportedly well-crafted sites and forums to other people innocently looking to start a download site of their very own,” said the firm. The sites also contained security exploits allowing the person to steal usernames and passwords. After a while, the malware would phone home with...

Possible Twitter Security Flaw 0

Possible Twitter Security Flaw

Reuters is reporting that a security flaw in Twitter exposes users’ login credentials. It’s related to a known vulnerability in the Adobe Flash programming language. From the article: Adobe has told programmers how to address the vulnerability, which was first discovered in 2006, he added, but noted the operators of many websites have failed to respond to the warnings from Adobe. Some of the comments I’ve seen are wondering why Twitter hasn’t fixed this. I was starting to wonder why the flaw still exists in the Flash programming language, then I realized Adobe can’t be responsible for programmers’ not keeping up. I’m not an Adobe fan (I don’t use the Acrobat reader on any of my machines and I use Flash only because there’s not much point to surfing the web without it), but I have to say that Adobe has gotten a lot of undeserved bad press...

Status Updates and Mad Men 0

Status Updates and Mad Men

I started my career answering hate mail from customers in customer service. Statistics at that time, back when persons communicated by telephone, letter, or even occasionally face-to-face, showed that someone who got bad service would tell, on the average, 10 persons; someone who got good service–that is, someone who got what he or she paid for–might tell one person. Social media may be increasing the reach of negative comments, as Bloomberg reports. A negative review or comment on the Twitter, Facebook or Youtube Web sites can lose companies as many as 30 customers, according to a survey by Convergys Corp. A customer review on one of the sites reaches an average audience of 45 people, two-thirds of whom would avoid or completely stop doing business with a company they heard bad things about, Convergys said, citing its own survey.

#bwe09 day 4 – Anthony Edwards first tweet

Got up. Showered. Shaved. Walked to convention center. Then I woke up. The opening keynote jumped us into gear. A panel of Andrew Edwards,Robyn Antone, Mark Gross and Jermaine Durpri. The subject: Celebrities and Social Media. Really great discussion about how they look at social media. Anthony Edwards promoted his efforts in Africa. Jermaine talked about how he talks with people until they show that ended with Anthony Edwards making his first tweet ever. Took in some sessions. Flash animations was a great show. We learned how to make the podcast lively with flash video. Different approach to casting. Cali Lewis was next as she talked about video cameras and green screens. She, along with her producer Neil, showed off the cameras they use and how they produce video for Geekbrief.tv. The day then took me to walking the floor and talking to various bloggers and casters. That...

Bing! Bang! Bust! The Plateau 0

Bing! Bang! Bust! The Plateau

Reteurs reports that both Twitter and Bing! plateaued in September. What growth Bing! has continues to be at the expense of Yahoo, rather than of Google. According to the Guardian, Twitter growth has stalled before, only to recover the next month. (See the second paragraph of this story, which also reports that Twitter has made reporting spam easier by adding a “spam” button to tweets.) But I suspect the novelty has worn off Bing! An excerpt from the Reuters story: After picking up decent market share every month since its June launch, Bing grew its share by a meagre 10 basis points last month. According to comScore, Bing’s share of the U.S. search market grew to 9.4 percent, versus 9.3 percent the month before. Google widened its lead to 64.9 percent share, from 64.6 percent in August, while Yahoo fell to 18.8 percent from 19.3 percent the month...

TSO: Twitter Search Optimization and how it can work like SEO

Most have heard of SEO – search engine optimization. It seems to be a common phrase nowadays. Every now and then I even hear ads on the radio that promote SEO because it is a viable thing for anybody’s website. The better it is searched, the more traffic that can come to it. However, there is another trend that has been creeping up. The same ideals, but this time In the microblog field. Something that could easily be known as TSO – or Twitter Search Optimization. Some practice this new ideal and others are even really good at it; but no matter what – if you are ignoring TSO, then you are ignoring a lot of new readers, listeners or viewers. The Little Birdies Can Still Sing 1

The Little Birdies Can Still Sing

“Tweet, tweet-tweet, tweet-tweet,” without paying royalties. The Guardian reports that Twitter’s attempt to trademark the word, tweet, has failed, not because the idea is silly, but because someone beat them to it with . Twitter applied to the US patent and trademark office last month for ownership of the word but the request was provisionally denied on the grounds that other companies had filed for trademarks of very similar words. The authority cited three applications by firms called TweetMarks, Cotweet and Tweetphoto, and said there was a “likelihood of confusion” between the various marks. Now, I can see that trademarking terms such as “TweetMarks,” “Cotweet,” and “Tweetphoto,” because they are made up words meant to identify a specific product, much like “Xerox” and Kleenex.” But it rubs against my cranky old man grain to see someone try to trademark a plain English word that dates back to the...

Why Is Twitter So Vulnerable? 0

Why Is Twitter So Vulnerable?

The New York Times reports that another DDOS attack took down Twitter yesterday evening. (Having no interest in Twitter, I wouldn’t know first hand.) The story is here. The article also considers why Twitter is so vulnerable. The expert* they interviewed theorizes that Twitter’s network infrastructure has not kept up with its popularity. Most large sites have more complicated networks and use several providers to ensure they have stay online. But Twitter uses only NTT America. “It might not be hard to take Twitter down, just looking at the way they designed the network,” Mr. Lyon said. “You just have to take little parts of NTT down and the whole thing crumbles.” Mr, Lyon goes on to describe Twitter’s network infrastructure as “very amateurish.” At the same time, it bears noting that, despite its rise in usage, Twitter does not make money, and building a network more resistant...

Down but Not Out 3

Down but Not Out

When I first saw reports–I think on Reuters–that the DDOS attack that brought Twitter down and Facebook to a crawl on Thursday was directed at knocking one blogger in Georgia (country, not state) off line, I was somewhat skeptical. But this morning it was in the New York Times, so It Must Be True ™ there might be something to it. Here’s a link to the story in today’s Times. Here’s one to yesterday’s Reuters story. The blogger is looking back at last year’s Russo-Georgian tussel and someone, probably in Russia, doesn’t like it. There is a moral to this story. The world didn’t end because Twitter was down for a few hours and or because I was unable to load Facebook for 15 or 20 minutes. No buildings fell down, no one died, no great tsunamis crashed into Malibu Beach. (Indeed, in that 15 or 20 minutes,...
