Death of The Crunchies

Death of The Crunchies

At the TechCrunch Winter Party that took place in San Francisco last week, there was a pinata bashing that signified the death of the much maligned awards show, The Crunchies, which after a decade of highs and lows has finally been shuttered by Verizon, TechCrunch’s new parent company. Launched in 2007 by legendary TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington, the show’s mission was to showcase the best in tech, but it soon became mired in controversy for becoming an over-the-top, glitzy, star-studded affair that repeatedly celebrated the same industry heavyweights: Twitter’s Jack Dorsey, Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, Google/Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer, Uber’s Travis Kalanick, Salesforce’s Marc Benioff, Snapchat’s Evan Spiegel. Broad, overreaching categories like Best App, Best Startup, Best Founder seemed to exclude many who were toiling away, revolutionizing the industry. “They had an award for ‘Best VC’ which pretty much says it all right there,” recalled BitTorrent Founder Bram Cohen. Did Google Buy Nest to Spy on You?

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Lots to talk about on CES and the Downtown Las Vegas startup project that Tony Hsieh is working on. I will be going back to Vegas for Tech Cocktail next month, which already have plans to really rock it out. CES was another success as we pulled out about 250 videos. Now I have to get to processing those, but my main PC died. Looking for people who will help in getting a new machine for video editing and I have some great sponsor opportunities because of it. TWIGG will start back up next week, as will iPad365. Orb Audio Speakers

Orb Audio Speakers Bring Design, Scalibility

Looking to get some new speakers for the home entertainment center? Maybe you want something in your computer room. Something with performance and something that looks good. That is where Orb Audio comes in. Orb Audio is a modular speaker system that can give you simple or complex sound in your home. You can choose 2 speakers, or get the full 5.1 surround system for high definition movies and TV. Designed in the US, these speakers are no bigger than a softball – yet there is nothing soft about them. Connecting to a receiver, these speakers put out some sound. Starting with the Quick Pack – a two speaker system – you can use these at the computer or for a smaller system. However, if you are going to pay for these speakers, you might just get the subwoofer to round out the sound (although I figure the...
