Close Encounters of a Vistarious Kind

I had my first hands-on encounter with Windows Vista today. A friend asked me shoot the trouble between his Vista laptop and his HP F380 Deskjet printer. Man, am I glad I use Linux.

Windows 7 and Netbooks

Windows 7 and Netbooks

Netbooks seem to be the newest hot thing. I saw my first one a week ago, and it was slick. It was an XP box, but the user was running Ubuntu Linux under Wubi (we talked geek for almost an hour). Windows is promising a stripped down version of Windows 7 adapted to netbooks. In this storyBloomberg News considers whether it will help Microsoft’s business model.

ATI Catalyst Drivers 9.1 Released

I’m never been a gamer, simply because I knew I would never have the time to get good at it. Asking for frustration is something I try not to do. But my gamer sons were always happy with my ATI cards. The latest ATI drivers are out:

It was a year ago Sunday that started what I called the soap opera “As the MicroYugo turns”. Microsoft put on a bid for Yahoo of $31 a share – 44.6 Billion in cash and stock. Of course the news went on til August as Yahoo said no, then Carl Icahn stepped up, Yahoo gave him a board seat, Jerry Yang stepped down as CEO and finally in January of 2009 Yahoo replaced him with Carol Bartz. However, did you know that the day before the announcement, former CEO Terry Semel broke all ties with Yahoo? Some other items of note you’ll hear on the Podcast – It’s Timothy McVey day! What if Microsoft went Open Source?

What if Microsoft went Open Source?

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSOpen Source seems to be a growing movement. Not everything is part of the “GNU General Public License” though.  Some have even gone as far to make their own Public License standard. Microsoft does have some Open Source to them, but what would happen if they took their Operating System to that standard? Would people accept the Microsoft OS, or would they finally make the switch to Linux? Brought to you by CareerSaver.com – 25% off Training materials if you use code “Geek08”.

Thoughts on Windows 7

Thoughts on Windows 7

I understand that Microsoft needs to move forward with their Operating Systems. What I don’t understand is all the hype that Windows 7 is getting. Especially for something that won’t come out until possibly 2010. I remember sitting at my desk on the Windows 95 support team (yep, I worked for but never was employed by Microsoft) previewing an alpha copy of “Nashville” – technically it was suppose to be Windows 96, but the OS was revamped and then scrapped for 98. All I could think of while playing with the browser was “Why when 95 was doing so well?”

2008 Predictions in Technology by techpodcast members

2008 Predictions in Technology by techpodcast members

“Don’t Tase me, Bro.” is being heralded as the top quote of 2007. Who would have guessed that? Well, some tried to in early 2007. Predicting the future is not just a psychics’ job. Then again, we are not predicting – we are analyzing – Seeing trends in the last year to determine what is coming out next year. I went through some of the predictions of 2007. Some were dead on. Social Networking and Apple devices seemed to top the list in this subject. Other predictions – well, not so much. Now we are fast approaching 2008. There is a lot of technology that was debuted in 2007 and since they are still in their infant stages, we will see them ramp into tools that change the way we compute. 2007 was also a year of rethinking. Going Green is one of the ways we rethought things....
