Westworld Experience at SXSW: Walk Through Sweetwater With Me

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhen I’m at a major conference, I try not to take on anything that consumes 4-5 hours of my time. Of course, I make exceptions – which you have to do from time to time at SXSW. Long lines for movie premieres or major events are a common thing. When I found that Westworld was going to have an experience at SXSW, I knew I couldn’t pass this up – no matter how long it took. The end result was an event I will never forget. How HBO Built Westworld at SXSW About 30 miles northwest of Austin sits the J. Lorraine TX Ghost Town. A theme park open year round and host to many different events. Therefore, it would make sense that HBO and Westworld would use this to set up the town of Sweetwater – the main town in...

World View Experience: Travel 100,000 feet, See Earth’s Skyline

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSLast year, Felix Baumgartner travelled 125,000 feet into the air for his record free-fall jump. As the pictures show, you can get a great view of the Earth this way without actually travelling in space. Well, the folks at World View want to give you that similar experience – 100,000 feet in the air with a lot slower decent. At Tech Cocktail startup event in Las Vegas, I got to find out more about this plan to send groups in a 5 hour tour. The process includes a 2 hour ascent to 100,000 feet via balloon, a one-hour stationary period, and finally a 2 hour decent using a ParaWing. I also found out that Astronaut Mark Kelly will serve as “Director of Crew Operations” for the trip. This trip will not come cheap, though. Each passenger will be paying $75,000 for their seat....

16 Tech Innovations that didn’t quite stick

16 Tech Innovations that didn’t quite stick

You might remember the products. You might remember the hype. Then, you are tooling down highway 41 years later and all of a sudden you think to yourself – “Hey, whatever happened to…” Failed ideas. Maybe it was a great idea, but wasn’t made right, or design errors brought it down. Maybe it was just a bad product. Well, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and see if we cannot repeat these errors again. Oh yeah, why 16? Well because we could. The Computer Watch: Whether it was the Ruputer, the MSN Direct ‘Smart’ Watches, the Timex Data Link Watch or another gadget watch – BTW – I remember having a “Transformers watch”. It was awesome! Still, the Dick Tracey style communication watches, the “Computer on a wrist”, never really hit it off. I even remember a watch that gave you directions. You would put in the...

You’ve made lots of money for the company and are the most loyal employee they know of. Yet, tough times are ahead and the company decides you are one of the 10% they have to let go to stay afloat. It’s a frustrating thing to have happen, but what are you gonna do? Now let’s flip that: You are at your job and survive the cut, but now you are in the position to take up a part of that person who was laid off. As companies like Intel and Google are looking at trimming the fat, it makes the average consumer wonder – what will our customer experience be without 10% of the workforce?

CES – Day 4 p.1 Blogging from NBC Universal

CES – Day 4 p.1 Blogging from NBC Universal

Well I didn’t expect this to happen, but when we got to CES today, our first order of business was to interview Jon Accarrino with NBCUniversal. What turned out was not only the interview with Jon, but also Bill Hartnett. We talked about their little Blogger lounge and how NBC has contributed to this new media. Andy interviewed the event on the Primary channel, and I took Backchannel video coverage. The best part is the fact that Jon set me up with a station where I could not only upload the Video in High Speed, but also put up this Blog. Therefore, I am sitting in this comfortable chair connected to a real high speed pipe (300 MB Video was posted in no time flat). Sure beats the 170 minute upload at the Hotel.
