If it wasn’t for this innovation, we would be working with levers and punch cards. Forget about the internet as we know it.I would guess that we would eventually find something similar. Other important notes: Sega Dreamcast, Windows XP SP1 and Microsoft ME launched this week. We also saw the birth of ‘Remote Computing’. The Gopher Protocol and Genetic fingerprinting. Of course we also remember 9/11/01. Brought to you by Gotomeeting – Get a 30 day free trial, no CC required.

This week I pulled out an old PC to see if I could use it for a project. It was an HP 800 mHz Celeron with Windows 98 on it. I turned it on and went through the screens and played with the old Operating system. Then it occurred to me: There are probably people out there that still use this Operating System on a day to day basis. It made me wonder why anyone would continue to use this antiquated OS. It’s slow and it doesn’t have the bells and whistles like newer OS’s such as Vista, XP and Ubuntu. Most importantly it can be a security hazard to use nowadays. It’s a watch. It’s a Computer. No – it’s a RUPUTER. RuPuter is a 16-bit 3.6 MHz watch with 128K of Ram. It has a 102×64 pixel monochrome LCD. It also contained a joystick for gaming, and 6 buttons for functionality. It could connect via serial interface or Infra Red to communicate with other devices, like another Ruputer or Windows 95. It really was a marvel of the time – 1998 to be exact. It contained W-PS-DOS version 1.16, and had an icon filled GUI. It also had an expansion option of another 128K. There were some competitors to this like the Fossil Wrist PDA. It had a slightly bigger screen , connected via USB and ran Palm III software. The batteries didn’t last long, but the watch was still impressive. Still, this is about the Ruputer – for on April 9th, 2008, the Ruputer turns 10. It was concidered the first...
