If you are a small-to-medium business (SMB) you try to find items for your office that don’t cost you an arm and a leg. It seems printing (especially color printing) is always a problem for cost and ease of use. HP has been looking into this problem and come out with the X series multi-function printer (MFP).
The officejet pro x576dw MFP is a desktop printer that can print up to 70 pages per minute in general office mode. The printer prints a 4 ink system (Yellow,Cyan, Magenta and black) with color matching when one inkwell is empty. The ink is expected to have a long shelf life and the ink head system is completely changed to avoid clotting and clumping.
HP Product manager Larry Tracy stepped us through the Officejet printer and all its inner-workings. The printer has a roller system and duplexer that can be accessed from the back of the unit. This is the only area a paper jam can happen – just open the back and pull out the paper.
“This product is our first page-wide array product” says Larry Tracy. “so rather than have a head, this print head is a little over 8 1/2 inches wide and you can see the components (chicklets) stitched together. Each one has four rows of nozzles, 40,000 nozzles in this array. This is what we call a page-wide array. This print head is fixed and static in this device. What that allows us to do is move paper at a high amount of speed.”
The officejet pro has a LCD interface and network print interface like in all other HP printer products. The officejet pro has wi-fi built in.
The print cartridges are designed to print up to 4,200 pages per month. Cartridges are expected to handle 9600 pages (black) and 6000 pages (color array). Replacement prices are not official but expected around $100 for black and $100 for the 3 color to replace but also come with a recycling program through HP Planet Partners.
The Officejet pro will start shipping next year. No prices are set but Larry Tracy assured this will be a sub-thousand dollar product. Other printers in the series set to release are the x476 MFP and Officejet Pro x451 / x551.
