Zenfone 7 with Flip Camera at 8K from ASUS

I bought my first Android phone in a long time. I am building an “At home” kit – a video system that I send to people for one-on-one interviews. But for this video, I’ll be unboxing and setting up the phone for everyday use.
Asus Zenfone 7 Specs
The Zenfone 7 is an Android phone with AMOLED display measuring 6.67 inches of viewing screen. The display also emits up to 700 nits for outdoor reading, and protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6. Finally, the screen is SGS certified for eye comfort.
The Zenfone 7 uses the 7 nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 5G mobile chip, and is a 64-bit Octa-core processor. Qualcomm Adreno 650 is the GPU, and runs LPDDR5 RAM at either 6 or 8 GB.
Audio
Speakers are stereo dynamic, 5 magnet speakers with dula NXP TFA9874 smart amplifiers. The phone runs the Qualcomm Audio CODEC.
3 Microphones on the Zenfone 7, with ASUS noise reduction technology.
Connection and Storage
This phone is GSM based, but you can get at WCDMA phone if needed. Dual SIM tray allows for 2 carriers on the phone. Both slots can be equipped with a nano SIM card and support 2G to 5G speeds.
WiFi 6 inside, with dual band 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz connections. Bluetooth 5.1, supporting Qualcomm aptX Adaptive. Add a USB-C adapter for Ethernet connection, along with USB options.
The SIM tray also holds a microSD card, up to 2 TB in size.
And Then There’s the Camera…
Most notable feature of this phone is simply the camera. There is only one set of lenses, and they can move to the subject. Therefore, you can have your best camera shooting, and watch from the screen of the phone.
This phone holds a Sony IMX686 64 MP image sensor, capable of up to 16MP pixel size. It’s F1.8 aperture can give give you a good field of depth, along with letting in enough light to get shots during the day or evening. 3 Lenses
With a Wide camera, Ultra-Wide camera, and Telephoto lens, you can get the group selfie, or a zoom in of your cat doing something cute or funny. The Ultrawide camera is a 12 MP dual pixel sensor with f2.2 aperture, and the Tele camera is 8MP with a 3x optical zoom (up to 12x with digital).
Video Recording
The Zenfone 7 can record up to 8K UHD (7680×4320 at 30 fps, 4K (3840×2160) at up to 60 fps, 1080p 60fps, or 720p at 30 fps. The phone has 3-axis electronic image stabilization so you don’t get blurry photos of your cat.
Finally, the phone can record motion tracking video at 4K, Time lapse at 4K, and Slow motion video – 120fps at 4K, 240 fps at 1080p, and 480 fps at 720p.
And with the lens gimbal, you can create some fun video panning left-to-right, or up and down. The camera will also create panoramas and do some motion tracking of subects.
Initial Thoughts
I got this for video at-home kits. The idea was to take the phone out of the case, set on a tripod, and go. Along with an external microphone and LED light, the setup only takes minutes by the user.
I then connect up via Teamviewer, and remote control the settings of the presenter – adjusting light, screen zoom, and more.
The phone works really well for this, and the video that comes back is perfect for post-production recording. Unfortunately, this phone cannot produce great quality for a Zoom call, but we are not using video that way.
We have recorded several videos, then pulled the footage off the phone to a Google drive. Keep in mind, a 15 minute 4K video will generate a 10GB file, therefore, reserve some time for uploading if you need it right away.
Connecting to a USB-C dock lets you turn this phone into a small form factor computer with the best internet speed available.
The only issue I run into with the camera is the person looking at the screen too much. And front-facing phone will do that. I have countered that with carrots to help them focus on the lens over the screen.
Bottom line is the presenters enjoy the reassurance of seeing themselves so they can confidently talk on the subjects interviewed on.
Price
The ASUS Zenfone 7 is available for $650. ASUS has also released the Zenfone 7 Pro (256 GB), for $800. Get the Zenfone 7 here.
