The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Sale for $4.99 (£2.49)

As part of the Steam Summer Sale, one of the huge deals of the promotion is Skyrim.  The game is normally £9.99 but has been reduced to £2.49($4.99). At the time of publishing, there is only one hour left on this deal. So if you’ve been waiting for a good discount on this game, then now is the best time to jump on it. And jump on it now because this is a great game with a metascore of 94/100. For the record, I never actually played Skyrim. I wanted to do so but could not afford the hefty price tag when the game came out. However, now that the game is at a superb discount, I have already pulled the trigger. If this metascore rating is anything to go by, then it clearly is a great game and one you should download for PC. In case if...

Game Sale Alert: GOG.com’s 2014 Summer Sale

Hot on the heels of E3, GOG.com have started their own summer sale across their library of PC games both old and recent. Best of all, these games are DRM-free, meaning that you can put them on as many computers as you want. To give you an idea, the majority of their catalogue has been discounted by at least 50% and some games have been discounted by as much as 90%. Long story short, there are some great deals to be had right now. There will be some flash deals which will come and go pretty quickly, so if you see a game you like at a good price, then jump on it. Personally, I am going to make sure that I buy Unreal Tournament (Game of The Year Edition). I am really into first-person shooters at the moment.  Since the new unreal tournament is being developed, I...

XBox One Controllers Now Work on The PC

If you have an XBox One, then there is some really good news for you. As of today, Microsoft has officially released their own drivers/software for the XBox One controller. You will be able to download and install the drivers, connecting your XBox One controller to the PC and just like that you will be able to play your favourite PC games with the XBox One controller. At this time, we’ve not been able to confirm if any other third party XBox One controllers (like the Mad Catz Killer Instinct FightStick TE2) will also work with these drivers. However, if anyone has been able to test a third party XBox One controller, please leave a comment below. Personally, this is a move that I predicted ever since I first heard that Microsoft were working on the XBox One. I predicted that the controller would be compatible with the...

Gaijin Confirms the Release Date for War Thunder on PlayStation 4

The folks at Gaijin Entertainment have confirmed that the PlayStation4 version of War Thunder is going to be available for download on 3rd June 2014 in the USA. Those of you in Europe can get it now. Just like the PC version, the PlayStation 4 version will also be a free-to-play game. On top of that, those of you on the PS4 will also be able to pick up the Ground Forces expansion. This is an expansion pack which adds tanks into the game. In a future addition to the PS4 and PC versions, War Thunder will have cross platform compatibility so that those on PS4 can play online with those on the PC. I have not played War Thunder before. However I have definitely seen enough game play footage and enough screenshots to say that this is a game that looks really exciting. I have always been...

Free Game Alert: Battlefield 3 Goes Free on PC

Some of you might already know about EA’s “On The House” promotion. This allows you to download full version PC games for free. Now we’re not talking about any rubbish ones, we are talking about some good ones. Previously, they’ve made Dead Space free and they currently have Plants vs Zombies available for free until 16th June 2014(at the time of publishing).  However, the folks at Origin have made Battlefield 3: Standard Edition free. Again, it’s the full version of Battlefield 3 for PC. Battlefield 3 will be On The House until 6th June 2014, so I would highly recommend downloading it for free as soon as you can. I am so excited that they’ve made this game free. I only played the original Battlefield back when it was released. But now I am so glad that this Battlefield 3 is available for free. I am always looking...

Booting Knoppix: A Short Photo Tour

In my post on Tasting Linux, I mentioned Live CDs as a way of sticking your toe in the Linux pool to see whether it might be fun to dive in. I thought it would be fun to show some pictures of what a Knoppix Live CD boot looks like. This is just an intro, not a detailed HOWTO.

CES – Day 1 3

CES – Day 1

Well, it’s day 1 and we have walked through half the Sands convention center with cameras in hand. Todd, Andy, Andy and myself took the morning to record the first half of the floor. We found some pretty interesting booths and did some great interviews. I am downloading some of the content as we speak. We also talked to a couple companies that dealt with e-readers, LED lighting systems, Mogulus, TV-armor and one of the products I was waiting for in Vuzix (oLED technology). With the four man team, we were able to get some great content. 2nd Half

When Streaming TV and Movies Go Mobile – Joost and iPhone

As a kid I had this really cool TV. it was a Bentley with a 5″ Black and White screen and ran on AC power or 9 “D” batteries. It went all the way up to Channel 83, so if I hooked it up to the cable today, I would get the Big 10 network, MTV, and Disney. Yeah, Black and White, but sometimes you have to go old school. Joost is no Bentley, but they might have finally pulled into a niche here. Last week they made an iPhone app for the Joost service. It’s not the best thing in the world, but it’s better than nothing.

When I get to a specific client, sometimes I am asked to sign a waiver that states I will not take company data. I sign it because I am not going to ruin any relationship by walking out with secrets or customer lists. Data nowadays can be controlled. We at the Quickcast have talked about how that can happen many a time. However, the most important thing in a work environment is to make sure the data stays within the company – even after a person has left. Citrix Systems has given  Employees a bonus payment to buy their own laptop for corporate use. While it does give advantage, could the company lose control of the data? However they simultaneously opened Fancast – a Video Download site which won’t go against that cap. They also have Comcast.net, Disney Connection and Rhapsody Player Plus – All within their community. There was another company that tried to keep their members contained within their virtual fence. That company was AOL.  However, AOL has been opening up for all to use. Still, I have to ask the question: Is Comcast becoming the next AOL?

Firefox Download Manager Slow and Annoying. Please Fix. 8

Firefox Download Manager Slow and Annoying. Please Fix.

On my podcast, I ran through a TechTweak to continue a download if the download is taking a longer time. Little did I know that issue was more Firefox than receiving packets. When I was beta testing Firefox, I noticed that downloading files took a lot longer and caused the browser to actually run slower. I posted a bug report on Mozilla.org. I mentioned that I downloaded several items via Firefox and IE, and I saw IE not only did a better job in downloading, it did not affect my browsing habits. I also told them I had seen this happen on more than one machine and plugins do not make any difference. They said (in so many words) this was not a big issue and marked the case “Unconfirmed”.
