CommvaultGo 2019 Wrap Up: Metallic, Hedvig Added to Commvault Portfolio

CommvaultGo happened last week in Denver, CO. I joined the Tech Field Day group to learn more about Commvault, their acquisition with Hedvig, and the new SaaS – Metallic.
Hedvig Acquisition
Back in September, Commvault acquired Hedvig for $225 Million. Hedvig is a storage vendor with an existing HCI stack.
Don Foster, VP of storage solutions, walked us through the announcement.
This gives Commvault a storage solution for their Backup and Recovery solutions. It also gives a customer options to who they want for their storage solution. They can still use an HPE, Dell, or other solution without issue.
It does give you one vendor for storage, backup and recovery needs.
Metallic Cloud SaaS
The other major announcement is Commvault’s new venture, called Metallic by Commvault. David Ngo, senior director of managed services talked us through the new offering.
This is a cloud offering for backup and recovery for your Enterprise data. From backing up VM, file servers, and SQL, to Office 365 backup and recovery, and even endpoint (laptop, desktop) solutions.
This is a new offering, and although it’s in general release, it is only available (at this time) to the U.S. market.
Metallic is not replacing the Commvault enterprise backup and recovery, but more of a new layer to backing up and recovering. That way, companies that don’t need this Saas do not have to pay for it.
Pricing is by TB for core backup (starting at $200), per user for Office 365 ($4/user) and endpoint backup ($9.25/user).
There is a 45 day free trial available for testing. Try it out at Metallic.io
CommvaultGO Event
This was a fun week in Denver, CO. The hall was setup for product demonstrations, learning, and hands-on. Two “Campfire” theaters for a different way to learn, a fun digital sign that shows how Metallic is disrupting cloud backup, and a puppy therapy area you can go in to decompress.
The keynote featured customer stories, Hollywood stunt doubles Chloe Bruce and Bobby Holland Hanton (to help explain how backups are important), and Jimmy Chin – the filmmaker who brought the movie “Free Solo” to the screen.
