Is Hulu Live TV Worth the $40 a Month? I Install on Different Platforms to Test

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSTVoIP (Television over IP) is really gaining momentum. So much that your cable company might be your Internet provider only and you’ll have many options to choose from. Hulu wants to be one of those to deliver live tv, and they put together a great plan so you can start watching right away. It does come with some limitations, though. What is Hulu Live TV? Hulu.com has added 55 channels which you can stream at any time from your devices at home. Starting at $39.99, you will get favorite cable channels from AMC to USA. In some locations, you will also get local stations. The channel lineup is dependent on where you live, so check with the channel lineup in your zip code. Advantages of Hulu Live TV You can watch on many different devices. It’s in Beta, so more options...

How to Get HBO, Showtime, or Starz Without a Cable Contract

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIt’s a new age for watching TV. Netflix, Amazon and Hulu have been growing while premium TV channels like HBO, Showtime, and Starz sat behind cable contracts. Last year the premium channels started to break free and offered TV and movie content without the cable subscription. You can watch on your Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, XBox One, PC, Mac, and other devices, ultimately saving you more and possibly cutting your cable. Let’s look at some ways you can get these services. **Note: prices and offers can change at any time.** HBO Now through the App In order to subscribe, you need a provider. Companies like Roku, Apple, Google Play, XBox Store and Amazon can act as the provider over your cable company. Once you get the HBO Now app, simply choose which method you want to subscribe. Geekazine and the Blip.tv Channel – Blip Closing on August 20, 2015

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIf you haven’t heard, Blip.tv will be closing its doors on August 20,2015. I have used Blip to host video since 2009, so I have to find a new home for over 900 videos. In the meantime, I put together a little video on what’s going on and what you can expect in the next couple weeks. Will Geekazine become a part of MaxMakers? I have not made that decision yet. They ask for a 2 year commitment, which I get a little weary on. I have put in a request to meet with them, we’ll see what happens. What is Happening to the Videos You Posted? I have to download all 900+ videos and find a new home for them. Yes – Find a new home. Some will be archived at Archive.org. I am still working on a CDN option....

Top 5 Videos of Geekazine in 2014

Its been a fun ride creating videos this last year. I made some major changes with shows, which really paid off in the end. Geek Smack! got a major overhaul to something more manageable. Here are the top videos you watched: Chromecast vs. Apple TV vs. Roku Throwdown You guys were very interested in Over the Top Television (OTT) and set top boxes. This video had audio issues but you watched it. I even made another version which corrected the audio issues but you still watched this one. That is the power of Social media! Netflix, Amazon or Hulu – the Throwdown It makes sense this would be the 2nd most watched in 2014. You purchased your set top box, you want to know about the programs you can get for it. I talk over each streaming service and which one you might be interested in putting your...

Amazon Fire TV Stick vs. Fire TV: A Two TV Solution Under $200

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSEarlier this year Amazon announced the FireTV – a competitor to the Roku and Apple TV. Doubling the specs of both devices, this became my goto choice for over the top television. Now, Amazon has come out with their lower cost version in the Fire TV Stick – mostly to compete with Chromecast and Roku Stick. This $40 device plugs right into your HDMI port in the TV, with a combined power USB cable which – depending on the TV you own – can be powered right through the USB port for a cord-free TV. Before we accellerate on the subject: keep in mind you DO NOT need an Amazon Prime subscription to own or use Fire TV. It does enhance the experience with more content. You can easily just run Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and other apps on Fire TV but...

Apple Beats: What is Tim Cook-ing up at Apple?

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Last week I was in New York for TechCrunch Disrupt. I got some great videos and tons of awesome footage of Times Square. However, when I returned my back decided to rebel from carrying 40 lbs throughout the city. Its been a tough weekend of recouping. Before the back siezed up I was able to hit some Friday garage sales with my brother. We hit an ultimate score – 2 totes full of in-box Spawn and Star Wars figures. We got it for a deal and are figuring out the next steps. If anyone wants to buy some, let me know. Last night’s TWIGG had a lot of great news. The Glass teardown found the device cost $150 to make – $200-250 with software and R&D. We had to ask why Glass was still $1,500. HP sent me 2 new devices...

Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, Chromecast – the Throwdown II

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSLast year when the Chromecast came out, I wanted to highlight the pros and cons of the top set top box devices. That included the Apple TV and Roku. What I called the Throwdown. Yesterday, Amazon announced their entry into the streaming box market. Their set top box made a big splash with the community. Faster than the other media boxes, the Fire TV also plans to compete with the gaming market and an additional wireless controller system. Therefore, I had to bring the competitors back for… The Set Top Box Throwdown II Amazon Fire TV If you have an Amazon Prime account and want to use it more, this box is for you. The Fire TV is  the larger of the four – at 4.5 inches by 4.5 inches. Inside the box is a Snapdragon quad-core processor – just like...

Roku 2 Set Top Box Changes the OTT Game, adds Angry Birds [Unbox Me]

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSEver since I got my Roku last year, I was completely sold. This set top box was the David to Apple’s Goliath (Apple TV). The prices matched Apple’s and the content was plentiful – It even had content Apple didn’t. Now, it’s taking the game one step further. By making this into a gaming system. Why I Choose Roku, Boxee (Application) Over Apple TV, Google TV 0

Why I Choose Roku, Boxee (Application) Over Apple TV, Google TV

330 days from now, TV as we know it will have changed. I’ve been saying that for a long time, but on Sept. 1st 2010, I decided to put it on the countdown. Why? Because Apple and Google came out with their set top boxes (Apple, finally taking it seriously). When companies like Apple and Google get into this game, you know the wind is about to change. The Comparison GigaOM has a nice write-up comparing the applications on the boxes. Each one has their own advantages and disadvantages. For example, if you want the iTunes store, you will have Apple TV and that is it. Expect this playing field to grow. The easiest box to program for is Boxee. If you know XML, you can get a channel on for nothing. The 0ther boxes might have you pay a fee for their SDK kits. There are also...

Nuu Media Shows their Stuff with The Nuu Player: Streaming, WebKit and More – CES 2010

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThe media player of CES this year was Nuu Media’s Nuu Player, not the Boxee Box. Hidden in one of the back corners of the South Hall of the Consumer Electronics Show was the people at Nuu Media with their player that will retail for a bit more than the other media player boxes, but it’ll also do more than the other media player boxes. The Nuu Player from Nuu Media does Boxee, so let’s shelve the comparisons right there. It does Boxee and has a 160 GB internal hard drive, which lets us place aside the Apple TV comparisons. On top of that, it streams media from most places that allow it, like CNN, Pandora, YouTube, Facebook video, last.fm, Netflix, MLB.TV, Comedy Central and Flickr. The press release states it plays “all available codecs in any form – video, music,...

Mommy, Can I Have an iPhone 2.0? No.

Today I was perusing the news and so far everything I have seen and heard is over the iPhone 2.0. Within the next few hours we are going to be sitting at the edge of our seats listening to Steve Jobs give a keynote at the World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA. What will he talk about? Will it be the iPhone? Will we all be wowed or disappointed? The truth is…. I don’t care. Yes, this is a great phone with a lot of innovation and ingenuity. Yes, it can do a plethora of things that my current phone might or might not do. But what is the big turn-on with this device? It’s not a magic genie that will grant you 3 wishes. There are 5 million iPhones out there right now. That is not even 1% of the cell phone population. At $400...
