How to Get HBO, Showtime, or Starz Without a Cable Contract

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIt’s a new age for watching TV. Netflix, Amazon and Hulu have been growing while premium TV channels like HBO, Showtime, and Starz sat behind cable contracts. Last year the premium channels started to break free and offered TV and movie content without the cable subscription. You can watch on your Amazon Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, XBox One, PC, Mac, and other devices, ultimately saving you more and possibly cutting your cable. Let’s look at some ways you can get these services. **Note: prices and offers can change at any time.** HBO Now through the App In order to subscribe, you need a provider. Companies like Roku, Apple, Google Play, XBox Store and Amazon can act as the provider over your cable company. Once you get the HBO Now app, simply choose which method you want to subscribe. Cowboys and Aliens, what’s not to love?

Cowboys and Aliens, what’s not to love?

If the title Cowboys and Aliens doesn’t spark something in you, then your imagination might need some tweaking. Just the idea of it was enough to get me interested from the start, then I saw the trailer and saw the people who was involved and I got really excited. So what happened? The film revolves around Daniel Craig as a cowboy with amnesia and a mysterious weapon attached to his wrist. And it’s not long before the aliens from the title make a appearance and the major conflict begins, bringing together western archetypes together to do what we all came for, kick ass. So with this all going on why was I just entertained by this film and not in love with it? Like to read before you watch? Get the Book Cowboys and Aliens I think it can be summed up in one word; potential. The main problem...

Captain America stirs up more anticipation for The Avengers

Captain America stirs up more anticipation for The Avengers

This is it, the last of Marvel’s single superhero focused movies that started way back in 2008 with Iron Man in a attempt to bring them all under one universe and set up The Avengers. So how does Captain America, a hero that could be argued is nothing more than a walking flag stand up to the other giants that have come before him? Plain and simple, this movie is fantastic. The movie’s pacing is absolutely brilliant, giving us plenty of time with pre-super serum Steve Rogers to learn what is behind the iconic Captain America. We are given a show of what a good and courageous person he is and why he was chosen above others who were much more qualified for becoming the first super soldier. That doesn’t mean this movie is without it’s action. From moments after Steve Rogers is injected with the serum the...

16 Tech Innovations that didn’t quite stick

16 Tech Innovations that didn’t quite stick

You might remember the products. You might remember the hype. Then, you are tooling down highway 41 years later and all of a sudden you think to yourself – “Hey, whatever happened to…” Failed ideas. Maybe it was a great idea, but wasn’t made right, or design errors brought it down. Maybe it was just a bad product. Well, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and see if we cannot repeat these errors again. Oh yeah, why 16? Well because we could. The Computer Watch: Whether it was the Ruputer, the MSN Direct ‘Smart’ Watches, the Timex Data Link Watch or another gadget watch – BTW – I remember having a “Transformers watch”. It was awesome! Still, the Dick Tracey style communication watches, the “Computer on a wrist”, never really hit it off. I even remember a watch that gave you directions. You would put in the...

Ramblings – 6-21-09 – Las Vegas

Day Off – Sort of A late Ramblings this week as I decided to stay offline last week. It was a long week and I was playing all weekend. It has been a while since I last took more than 24 hours off a computer, so that is a big feat for me. HP Tech Forum I had a fun time talking and working with Andy McCaskey and Kara Karsten with SDRNews. We had such a blast. We also put forward the mobile interview booth rig. We call it the “MacGyver” rig. Nonetheless, it was connected to uStream and we were able to conduct a few interviews for the event. Check out all the info on the Twitter log at #HPTF. Great to meet some new bloggers: Shane Pitman of Neowin, John Obeto of AbsoluteWindows. We had a great week along with Halley, Tom, Calvin and Rebecca from...

Most Interesting Error in Going to Hulu…

Most Interesting Error in Going to Hulu…

I went to Hulu this afternoon to catch up on my HEROES. I didn’t get to see it on Monday, so I knew that I could go up there and watch the show without issue. Or COULD I? Turns out Avast won’t have it. It is blocking the SWF from playing and saying “Malicious Code”. Tried a few times in Firefox and IE. Every show or movie I try to play comes up with the same thing. Here’s the kicker – neither Avast nor the Event viewer is showing any more info. In fact, it’s not even logging the event! Could this be a malicious code? Could it be that Avasts’ database is off? Maybe Hulu changed some stuff to thwart Boxee from going through the RSS backdoor? Well, there is a way around that. I went to NBC.com and watched the episode. I hope it’s not a...

When Streaming TV and Movies Go Mobile – Joost and iPhone

When Streaming TV and Movies Go Mobile – Joost and iPhone

As a kid I had this really cool TV. it was a Bentley with a 5″ Black and White screen and ran on AC power or 9 “D” batteries. It went all the way up to Channel 83, so if I hooked it up to the cable today, I would get the Big 10 network, MTV, and Disney. Yeah, Black and White, but sometimes you have to go old school. Joost is no Bentley, but they might have finally pulled into a niche here. Last week they made an iPhone app for the Joost service. It’s not the best thing in the world, but it’s better than nothing.

Fakes on the Internet

Fakes on the Internet

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Fakes. Throughout time we’ve had to deal with those who want to pass something off as an original. Sometimes we are not fooled. Other times we go years thinking that it’s the real thing until some new technology tells us different. In the last week I’ve seen many fake photos of different items – most notably the Large GPS picture and Windows 7 screenshots. There is even a video out there that supposedly displays Windows 7 functionality. While impressive, it makes me wonder if someone is trying to pass these off to make a quick buck?

It’s the End of the DVD As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThat’s great, it started with video tapes, movies in the home at 8, Lenny Bruce is still not afraid. I remember when we got our first VCR. It was a Betamax and we had some of the coolest movies. Of course, the Beta went the way of the do do bird. Then it was VHS. Come and almost gone. Now it’s the DVDs turn. Earlier in the year the big question was “Who was going to replace DVD’s: HD DVD or Blu-Ray?” Now we know that answer – but does it matter? Blu-Ray players really haven’t been selling like hotcakes and if you have one, you know that it’s not the fastest thing on the planet. The ultimate irony is that Sony owned Beta and lost to VHS. Now Sony won with Blu-Ray, but will...

Do We Need Comcast to Cap Bandwidth Usage?

Do We Need Comcast to Cap Bandwidth Usage?

Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSS Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIt would be interesting to see how much bandwidth I go through a month. Uploading shows, ustream channel, downloading software updates and media content.  All of it legally. There are some that decide to use their internet connection without abandon. They download movies, music and computer programs without legally paying for it. I have seen many downloading 4 to 5 items at a time, which at gigabytes at a pop, it’s a lot of data that passes through. And with programs like bittorrent, not only does it download the items, but it turns your computer into a “Seed” in which others can use to pull from. Comcast is working on a model to cap bandwidth per month. For some it won’t be noticeable. For the internet Zealot, they might find it tougher to work and...

What do all of these items have in common, well, they all are or will be shutdown. The internet grows daily – new websites start, and new websites fall.  Sometimes you can pick up the pieces and turn it into a profit, sometimes it’s just a name in the dust. On Monday, DivX Stage 6 – a popular video website and used to pirate a lot of videos, has decided to close it’s doors on Feb 28th. The site let users upload their favorite videos to share. Some of them were legal, home-made videos. Others were pirated movies and television series. You could watch them right there, or you could download them and watch them later – considering if you had installed the DivX codecs. –Hear the...

Where is DRM going?

Where is DRM going?

I remember when I got my first MP3. It was 1999, and I was pulling it from a P2P site that doesn’t exist anymore. That, well, and the entire collection of photo shopped Brittany Spears pictures. Back then, rights were being trampled and we did it because we didn’t know better. Nowadays, we have people right and left telling us that downloading music is not legal. Some people have turned to legal methods of music acquisition – 99 cents per song, or through a subscription service like Napster or Rhapsody. Others decided to take their chances and continue downloading and trading music. And because of this, companies have begun the attempt to curb the illegal download of such music. But as they did that, both artists and consumers rights were getting trampled, which lead us to ask the question: Does DRM actually work?

Weekly Roundup 1 – Will Android beat Godzilla, Mothra?

I am reminded of the old Godzilla movies when I hear “Android”. But in all reality, this is not much different. We just don’t see a cardboard city get demolished by 3 guys dressed in costumes. Google has given themselves not only a humungous undertaking in aquiring Android, but also a new buzzword that has been passed back and forth many times in the last few weeks. Since it’s silent aquisition back in August, the news has been anything but ‘quiet’. Companies getting on the bandwagon, putting in the hours to make this thing a success. But the real question is – Is this something that the massess want, or will this become another piece of diregarded technology. It’s safe to say that everyone wants a phone that can do more than take phone calls. Text messaging has become more viable way of communicating. According to www.cellsigns.com, 79% of the...
