NoiseVision: How Ford lets Good Sounds In, Keeps Bad Sound Out – #fordtrends

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSGood sound, bad sound. We don’t want to hear that over-volumed “Thump” of the clipping speaker in the car driving next to us, but we do want to hear when someone is honking their horn. We do want to hear a noise that illicits a reaction. That is what NoiseVision works on. The people at Ford created a sphere that listens for sounds. With 31 microphones and 12 digital cameras. They take the pictures of the sound and overlay a 3D image of the sound. We turned on a metronome to see how the microphones are taking measurements. The cameras will photo the area of the sound. If there is a noise that the engineers cannot get rid of, they can pinpoint it and find ways to mute the sound. It might be by layering or another method. So by doing...

World of Warcraft offers free ‘Starter Edition’ – GameBreak

The biggest MMO known to man or beast has released a more in depth and arguably a ‘better’ introduction to the game that has been dominating the market for nearly seven years. Originally Blizzard offered a 14 day free trial to it’s cash cow World of Warcraft. However, now it’s giving players something better; it’s giving players free game play up to level 20 for those who obtain it through their online store. That means you can take as long as you want getting there, testing the game out from different angles, before finally getting to the point where you need to make the decision to buy the game or not. Mind you there are some restrictions. You can only amass 10 gold on your character, can only get trade skills up to level 100, and are unable to trade with auction houses, mail boxes, or other players....

That is why we have wireless USB to HDMI. Using a simple dongle, you connect one machine to the TV. No wires, no hassles. Warpia has created a wireless USB to HDMI controller called StreamHD. How Ford Learned from Avatar: Motion Capture – #fordtrends

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSLast year when I went out to Dearborn, MI, we saw a lot with virtualization. A mock-up car where you put on the gloves and glasses, then saw yourself move around in that virtual world. However, Ford has taken it to a new level – by simply watching how Hollywood does it. More to the point – the movie Avatar. In this area, we look at how a person gets into and out of a car. They can go from a compact, to a heavy duty cab. The frame and bucket seats will re-adjust for the next vehicle. It’s called HOPS – Human Occupant Package Simulator. It not only can record a driver getting in and out, but also a passenger. Using the motion capture suit, the subject will get into and out of the car. The motion capture cameras will...

The Panel consists of host J Mays, Barbara Bylenga – Youth trend expert, Travis Lee – A designer with IDEO, and Anthony Prozzi – Interior designer at Ford. The first question J Mays asked was “Where do you get your ideas?” Whether through interaction or analytics, there are many ways to figure out a trend. J Mays suggests there is a difference between fads, Trends and Movements. “For me it’s when something you might call a trend becomes a value, becomes more than just a fad.” Anthony states. “The concept of Internet – how we have access to creation communication. Using a Legacy Screensaver in Windows 7 0

Using a Legacy Screensaver in Windows 7

Back in my Windows days, my favorite graphics program was Vueprint and my favorite sceensaver was its associated screensaver. Vueprint is small–less than a meg to download–fast, and versatile. For lighweight editing, such as resizing, cropping, and simple color adjustments, I found it unmatched in either the Windows or the Linux world. (The closest thing I’ve found in terms of lightweight and fast for Linux is XNView, and it’s not very close.) I decided to see whether Vueprint was still around, and it was. Ed Hamrick, its creator, is no longer developing it; he is concentrating on a sister program for scanners called Vuescan, but Vueprint is still available for download. Furthermore, it is now free as in beer; a registration code is published on that same page. It works just fine on Windows 7. However, when I tried to install the screensaver, nothing happened. It stalled because...

Ford Session Breakout, Day 2 – #fordtrends

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSDay 2 of the Ford Trends event started at an early as we started with a great breakfast. It was needed, for we were off to different sessions throughout the day. 5 sessions in all, we got to chose three. The first session was on Emerging Technology. The host was Paul Hochman and the discussion was about how technology is changing. He pulls out an iPhone and mentioned how it revolutionized the world. But now it’s going to change as all technologies implement touch. “It was more human in it’s interaction with the customer. ” Hochman says “I have a 2 1/2 year old named  Oscar. Oscar has figured out a way not only to completely scramble everything in my iPhone, but also get access to all the pictures. He knows that if he does this (swiping fingers across), the pictures...

Merging IT as a service so customers can get scalable storage. A Spirit in the Clouds? Pictures of Mysterious Light on My Flight. 0

A Spirit in the Clouds? Pictures of Mysterious Light on My Flight.

First of all, I have to preface by saying the only photoshop I did was put the watermark on. I was in the air from Chicago to Detroit. I decided to take pictures of clouds for an idea I had. There was this one cloud I thought would make a great picture. When I first took the series of pictures, I thought it was a great shot to make. However, I looked a little closer at the 2nd and 3rd pictures, I saw something in the bottom left-hand corner. It was a light in the form of a person standing on a cloud. When I went to the next picture, I saw that light jump up. The third picture showed the light up farther. I was pretty taken back to see the one picture. I thought it was impressive enough. This light on the corner, well, I don’t...

Forward with Ford Event, Alan Mulally, Malcolm Gladwell Keynote – #fordtrends

It was a long afternoon as I flew from Madison, WI to Chicago IL and finally Detroit, MI. However, the trip was worth it just for this first day. The best part, I am here to learn about how Ford is changing the way we drive our cars. I got to my room around 6 pm. A quick assessment of gear, a shower and I was out the door to the opening Keynote. Pretty amazing room – I am in the Oliver Wolcott house for this stay. It’s a replica of his house (from Litchfield, CT). Wolcott, of course, is one of the men who signed the Declaration of Independence. Wolcott later became Governor of Connecticut. In the upper suite – a 2 room hotel with 2 bathrooms, I have a place to work, a place to relax and a nice bed to sleep in. The keynote was held over...

Doug Outhout Answers What is Converged Infrastructure – #HPDiscover 2011

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSFive years ago, to put a project together was a pain. You had to figure out the servers, what type of network connection you need and how it was going to be programmed. Sometimes you got the project out on time and had little change. Other times, parameters changed, dates got set back and even the project didn’t finish. So to counter, HP developed Converged Infrastructure. This is a system that will help you get your project completed as quick as possible. Jeffrey Powers talks with Doug Outhout, Vice President of Converged Infrastructure and Alliances Marketing ESSN, on why you would need it. “It really comes down to the fact, when all the systems were being developed 5 years ago, they were developed in silos” Doug states. “When you deployed, you picked the pieces you need to deploy the right size,...

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSBeing an IT Admin in my life, I know how tough it was to manage a one-man shop. Sometimes a problem would come up where I might not be able to solve it. That is why I would want Greg and Chris Tinker involved. They are part of the escalation team. There are many levels in HP tech support (just like any other help desk). But the best part is these guys are there until the end. Doesn’t matter if it’s HP hardware or something else. “We have the depth to bring to bear on a technical problem.” Chris Tinker says. The two are principal debuggers. Their job is to mitigate the risk and get the system back online. After all, if you have a system down, you lose money by the minute. So their timetable is expected to be quick....

We talk about Converged Infrastructure and the new EcoPOD – how an IT department can use the scalability. It was a great testimony on how the Cowboys were able to change their ratio of what they were spending on IT, which was 80%.” says Campbell. “They were able flip that to spend about 80% on innovation and 20% on operations. “ Duncan mentioned Converged Systems – Appliances that center around Virtualization and Cloud. Scalability with an IT department. Duncan talks about how Dreamworks used the EcoPOD to ramp up for the movie Kung Fu Panda 2. “It’s all about accelerating IT to get better business results.” Duncan mentions. “At the end of the day, customers don’t care about Converged Infrastructure, but they DO care about is what it enables them to do…”...

From a single console, you have management of your Converged Infrastructure in a cost effective and efficient manner.” No more switching from OS to OS, program to program. As Les called it – “meantime to innocence“. When...

Mike Nielsen, director of solutions Marketing at HP Networking talks about how Flex Campus delivers content (including video) across the network. Michael used to work for Cisco. When he got to HP, Michael was astonished on what HP devices were available. So Michael helped bring simplification of the network architecture. “We are now starting to gain a bunch of traction.” Nielson states. ” We are trying to get away from this ‘It’s about the cost of the platform” and really start to talk about ‘It’s the cost of the architecture and the problem we are trying to solve.’” He finishes with “If you are going to design 4 and 5 tier network architectures, it’s going to be more expensive. I don’t care if there are cheap boxes, it’s going to be more...

Patrick Eitenbichler on Converged Application Systems – #HPDiscover 2011

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhen it comes to having multiple systems in your IT infrastructure, making them talk to each other can be a challenge. Integration is key to running a successful Datacenter. Convergence is key to make your Virtual center talk smoothly. “Converged Infrastructure is a architecture or blueprint of a Datacenter” Eitenbichler states. “That helps customers accelerate the  provisioning of infrastructure and services.” He talks about integrating everything into a interoperable pool that gets provisioned centrally. A stunning fact – 32% of applications are completed. That means 68% are stopped due to either budget, hardware change or simply time. Patrick Eitenbichler talks with Jeffrey Powers about creating a Systems portfolio. The idea is to shorten time to implementation. “What percentage of IT helps the business create innovative ideas?” Eitenbichler asks. This is a three part series. Virtual system, app system and cloud system. These three...
