iRig UA for Android versus iRig HD for iOS Video Comparison

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI remember building my first pedal board out of an old record player. The size was wide enough that I could hinge onto my Peavey Rage amplifier. I had a Wah/Volume, Reverb and Doubler pedals which I affixed to the board and plugged into the power strip. It was crude, but it worked really well. Today, all you need is a smartphone to not only get all those pedals, but a plethora of amps and microphones as well. Digital guitar modeling has majorly progressed in the last 5 years – especially with companies like IK Multimedia who are pushing the boundaries for musicians. A guitar player might just walk in with their ax and a tablet that plugs right into the soundboard. No more amps. No more pedal boards that lie on the ground to get beer spilled on them. The...

Choetech 5 Port USB Surge Protector, Griffin Reversible Lightning Cable

Today, I take a look at two USB products in the Choetech Surge protected 5-USB port charger, and the Griffin reversible USB to Lightning connector. Both are great products to have for your USB or iOS needs. Griffin Reversible USB to Lightning Cable Don’t you hate it when you can’t plug the USB cable in, so you think it’s backwards and flip it around only to find out the first way was right? Back in January, Griffin showed their solution to this problem in the reversible USB cable.  Now, the cable is out and ready for use. I checked out the 5 foot cable – a braided nylon cable with a more protective jacket at the plug ends. I put it in a high-traffic room to see how it would fair. Whereas my standard iPad/iPhone cable looked very dirty and sticky after a few days in this area,...

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThose of us moving to streaming or recording video are always looking for a good switching unit. While at NAB 2015, I checked with Roland and their VR-50HD and VR-3X mixers. Roland VR-3EX The VR-3EX is a four-channel SD video mixer. Kinoma Create: JavaScript-Powered IoT Construction Kit

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile at SXSW, I got a chance to talk with Andy Carle, Ph.D. about Marvell’s Kinoma Create. This is a device that allows you to create and learn hardware and software through the “Internet of Things” (IoT). We stood in front of a Labyrinth as Andy controlled the marble using the Kinoma. This device does a lot more than that. You can learn how to create and setup many different things. We saw a LED light change colors with the interface and a basic Red Blue Green toggle. Another Kinoma was set up to unlock a door. Sensors attached to another Kinoma could tell the temperature and time. The Kinoma create comes with a capacitive touchscreen, Wifi, Bluetooth, speaker and microphone unit, USB, micro SD card, battery compartment (AA Batteries) and a serial console port. Projects are found through Kinoma, or...

Gibson’s Neat Microphones: King Bee – Stylish and Powerful

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI sat down and talked with Skipper Wise at International CES 2015 while at the Gibson booth. Skipper was part of Blue Microphones until they sold it in 2013. He took some time off, but Gibson wanted him to bring out a line of microphones for their brand. So he came out of retirement to create something pretty sweet. Its called Neat Microphones, and their concept is around the “Bee” line. From Beestro to Beehive, Bumblebee to King Bee. I got to see the Worker and King Bee mics in action when Ryan Whyte Maloney recorded in their Gibson studio. Even the microphones get their own XLR Beeline cables and the shockmounts are open-faced to allow the microphone’s look to pass through. A line for studio recording, a line for home recording and podcasting. Best part – the USB desktop microphones...

Zolt Charger Plus: Alternate Power Brick for Your Laptop – CES 2015

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSOur laptops are getting smaller and smaller. Yet the power brick you use to charge up the battery seems to stay the same large device. The folks at Zolt want to change that with the Zolt Power charger – a laptop charger that is a fraction of the size. The Zolt power charger looks similar to any tablet or smartphone charging wart. Four times smaller than your laptop charger, this could fit into your bag easy. Best part – your laptop charger can stay at home on the desk. Zolt Charges More than Laptops Zolt is for 60 or 70 Watt laptop chargers. Best part – there are two more USB ports for your smartphone or tablet. Podcast Microphones: Audio-Technica ATR2100 vs. IK Multimedia iRig mic HD

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWe have another podcast microphone showdown as I look at two USB podcast mics that you can use for recording audio. Audio-Technica’s popular ATR2100 USB/XLR hybrid microphone and IK Multimedia’s iRig Mic HD USB/iPad microphone. I have pitted the 2100 against the 2500 but now we’re looking at podcast microphone vs. podcast microphone. You can use these microphones with all iOS, Mac and PC software. These microphones will not work on an Android phone without 3rd party adapters. IK Multimedia iRig Mic HD This is a Condenser microphone only in USB format. The micro USB cord is interchangable with USB, iOS 30-pin and lightning cables. One side of the microphone is a db volume dial and the other is an indicator light. The light is blue during passive sound states, green when signal is coming through and red if the signal is clipping. The...

Jabra Solemate Max: More than a Wireless Bluetooth Speaker-Review

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIt’s tailgate time! You have your grill, you have your mini-bar. But do you have an awesome audio system to run the music through? Today, I’m going to show you the Jabra Soulmate Max – a speaker system for whatever you need. The Solemate Max is the largest of the solemate series. This 6.6 pound brick is set to blast some sound for long periods of time. This is also a great speaker system for all devices – mobile to laptop and even works well as a TV bar. The Max is a 90 Watt amplifier with 2 tweeters, 2 woofers and a passive bass radiator. This means it can sound even better if you set it on a wood surface but the rubber footed bottom keeps it from vibrating around. The 3 cell 2200 mAh Lithium Ion battery gives you...

I Convert My Macbook DVD into a USB Drive with OWC SuperSlim

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSSince I put the OWC SSD into my system and moved out the DVD drive for another hard drive, I have parts from the Macbook left over – mainly the optical drive and older hard drive. There may be times I’ll still need the DVD, so I want to put it into an enclosure. Best part is I can use the DVD drive for any Mac or PC in the house. Especially since I just got an Ultrabook that doesn’t come with DVD drive, but did come with discs to install the OS and other drivers. In this video, I show you how to place in the DVD drive to the OWC SuperSlim, and how to place the SATA hard drive into the OWC Express USB enclosure. Get the OWC SuperSlim Get the OWC Express

But this laptop has a lot of great hidden features. You can even watch me dump water on the machine and throw it down! I am no stranger to HP laptops. Zoom H6 Handy High Resolution Audio Recording Device – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI got to see some great recording devices for getting that interview or keynote recorded. One in particular – the Zoom H6 Handy Recorder – is a multi-function recorder that I could use to mic a 6 person interview, a room for an event, a 2-3 person band, and more. The H6 is designed for everyone – musicians to journalists – videographers to sound professionals that don’t want to carry the whole studio with them. The H6 has multiple attachments along with the 4 XLR/TRS inputs. The Zoom H6 can track 6 channels for many different options. At the top is an attachment for a XY microphone, boom mic (with dead cat) or a mid/size capsule for up-close interviews. The unit is fairly small for what it can do. Weighing in at less than 10 ounces you will be able to...

Podcast Microphones: Audio Technica ATR2100 vs. ATR2500

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThe coolest thing about microphone technology is for under $100 you can get a decent microphone for video recording, podcasting or music. A lot of podcasters have been using the Audio-Technica ATR2100, which I reviewed here. But I just got the ATR2500 model and I am truely impressed with the sound it gives. Therefore, this video is a comparison of these two microphones. Audio-Technica ATR2100 This is a handheld dynamic microphone. The mic is meant to be used by musicians, comedians or anyone that needs to hold the microphone at times. It should be placed only a few inches from your mouth. This is a hybrid microphone – XLR to plug into a mixer and USB to plug straight into the computer. You can plug in both XLR and USB, then record from 2 sources. The ATR2100 has a range of...
