In 2005, Google purchased a company called Android Inc. They were making a Linux – based OS entitled Android. Google then took the idea and made it Open Source. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) was created to further the development of Android. Android code is licensed under the Apache license.
Android is a mobile OS. It is part of the Open Handset Alliance, which is a group of 80 hardware, software and telecom companies. The OS is written primarily in Java. Android development is free, just download the Android SDK. There are several apps for Android, with more coming daily.
Other mobile devices are the Android Tablet (in development by multiple companies) and Android television, which is an Over the Top Television (OTT) system. Since Android is Open Source, anyone can create new ideas with this Operating System.
