Ghastley Crud Zombies Book: From Kickstarter to Reality – SXSW 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile I was at Buffalo Billards for a SXSW event, I ran into Martin Whitmore – which was easy to do because he was the only one with a kilt on at the event (Sorry Ewan, but you were not there). I found out that Martin is an illustrator and ran a successful Kickstarter program for a book – The Ghastley Crud Zombies. Now if you are a fan of Edward Gorey then you will like this book. Whitmore used the similar style to put together a simple coffee table reader on 26 children who had to deal with Zombies. While probably not something to read to the children at bedtime (Whitmore states: You’ll laugh, your children will have nightmares), it is a fun book to page through. I talked with Martin about the book, we had a small reading of...

Dyn: DNS for Consumers, SMB and Enterprise – SXSW 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile at SXSW I stopped by the DYN party. They had an extensive line-up of Americana, folk and roots rock bands, headed up by feature artist: The Dawes. While at the event, I got to speak with Matt Toy – VP of client services. He works with all customers, from free to Enterprise customers. For the last couple months I have been talking about Dyn for Enterprise, but with the home users version, you can do simple consumer items. For example, if you want to connect your DVR or a webcam to your DNS so you can log on and watch, you can do it. Twitter started on Dyn’s $30 service. They grew from there. Small mom and pop shops can also utilize Dyn’s lower-priced features to get their business running on the internet. You can find out more by going to...

Instructables.com Carbon Fiber Acoustic Guitar – SXSW 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIts not going to be a Taylor, Martin, Atkins, or Guild acoustic guitar but it is your own. Instructables.com is a website to learn how to do things like upscale an old hard drive into a USB flashdrive or make furniture out of old road signs. Today we found out about an effort to make a guitar. The class was held where people spent 5 nights – 6 hours a night to create their own version of an acoustic guitar. We see the frame, fiberglass backing and his finished creation. I tried to play it – unfortunately it needs some more work. But the concept looks pretty solid.

AMD Shows the Case Mod Still is Alive With Ben Heck Creations – SXSW 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSDuring the first night of SXSW I was able to catch the AMD party. Upstairs on Congress avenue we were treated to an old idea reborn. The computer case mod. Modding a computer was something I thought was extinct but AMD showed us otherwise. They had about 10 case mods – mostly from Madison native Ben Heckendorn. We started with Chris Hook from AMD. He showed me an old gas pump turned into an Android controlled MP3 station. The player had screens on both sides of the Texico Fire Chief pump. Complete with the lighted bulb sign on the top. It wasn’t SXSW without some musical instruments. A bass drum and a guitar both were fixed up with AMD computers inside. The guitar was even playable (once the strings were put back on). It was pretty amazing the AMD boards inside...

Shaq on Twitter, Beam Personal Assistant – SXSW 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIt’s the last day of my SXSW coverage. I started the day with breakfast tacos 16 floors above Austin. We learned about an analytics took that included Tumblr. From there I stopped by the blogger lounge where I found my friend Calvin won a Samsung camera. What was really funny was the fact he took a few pictures with it, someone from Samsung saw it and awarded him a Galaxy Tab 2. Congrats, Calvin! I stopped in another session – this one asking if Podcasting needed a reboot. The show had Colin Anderson, Roman Mars, Jesse Thorn and Helen Zaltzman. The group talked monitization, if Listeners are plateauing, Challenges and opportunities and What a podcast reboot looks like. Then it was back to the Blogger lounge as Shaquille O’Neil stopped by. He talked about how he got on Twitter and how he remembers when SXSW was music only....

Rare Gibson “Lucy” Les Paul in Austin – SXSW 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI was told this guitar was the only one available in the US and that not even Gibson employee have not seen it yet. I am talking about the recreation of the famous Lucy Les Paul Guitar. A guitar that has a history just as ragged as any rock star out there. I am joined by Jon Accarrino of Red Touch Media to show off this beautiful guitar. The History of the Gibson “Lucy” This guitar started out as a Les Paul 57-58 Goldtop – a pretty rare guitar to start with. John Sebastian of the Lovin Spoonful eventually was the first notable name to hold and use this guitar in 1965. Sebastian didn’t have it for long as he traded it to Rick Derringer for a new amplifier. Derringer – who was with the McCoys at the time – liked...

AllHat V, MashBash Parties – SXSW 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIt was a great Sunday at SXSW as I started at one of my favorite places in Guero’s and AllHat V. It once again was sponsored by Chevy. One thing you need when going to this event is a cowboy hat. My band hat for some reason did not make the trip, so I used the next best thing – the Horse head. I got to talk with some great people and make new connections. It was a fun time. I also learned about Horse Boy – a group that uses horses for children with Autism. They were letting people sit on top of the horses as the trainer got them on their hind legs. No – I didn’t get on a horse. From there I stopped by the Fast Company Grill to find out what was going on. They had...

WWE’s John Cena, Google Shoes – SXSW 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI attended a couple sessions today, one being how the WWE is crushing social media. Did you know the WWE trends more than most other sports? Did you know that WWE’s John Cena has more Twitter followers than Kim Kardashian? The panel included Cena, Stephanie McMahon (EVP,Creative Developer), Perkins Miller (EVP of Digital Media) and hosted by Khris Loux of Echo. They talked some impressive numbers on how WWE is not only taking social media to new levels but also creating ways for fans to be fully interactive. Turning to the internet and iPad app when the show is on break, for example. But the WWE’s numbers can speak for themselves. Almost 100 million likes on Facebook, 45 million Twitter followers. John Cena himself has 3.5 million followers – placing him around 246 in the top followers list. Whats more impressive...

Rain in Austin, PBS Kids, Innovative Cener – SXSW 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSDay 1 of SXSW Interactive started out with rain. Everyone piled into the convention center to dry off and attend the first sessions of the event. The Samsung Blogger lounge opened and I met Brian Solis who gave me a copy of #WTF. While going from session to session, I ran into Pete Cashmore of Mashable. We had a brief but great conversation. I got to stop by the Roku – PBS booth where I not only learned about the new Roku 3 but also the 2 new channels from PBS on Roku. You will now be able to watch local public programming or shows like Downton Abbey. I then went to a couple events including Toys for Techies where I enjoyed some cool innovations. Finally I stopped outside the convention center to see the maker-booths. From 3D printers to banana piano...

SXSW Registration, Game of Thrones – SXSW 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSToday I stopped at the registration booth at SXSW. This is where you get your passes, bag, press tags and even housing information. Within the first day I ran into a bunch of friends including Jeff Cutler, C.C Chapman and Ewan Spence whom I saw while sitting on the Game of Thrones throne. Actually, I got to see more of Ewan Spence than I wanted to. I also walked around the center a bit to talk about merchandise of SXSW and how people get around the event. An amazing day with some great parties in the evening.

TechShop at SXSW 2013

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI got to head to SXSW a little early this year. I stopped in the SXSWedu area where they were building models from LEGO, 3D printer models from a Makerbot and more. TechShop was supplying the materials and equipment to make some cool items. I got to talk with them and also got a dog tag laser etched. Techshop is a place where inventors can get their ideas off the ground. They have the space and tools for you to use. www.techshop.com
