Geek Smack: Its been a Blast. 300 and out – For now

I remember when I started this podcast. October 2007 I finished up a run with another show – the Independent Music Podcast. I wanted to create something new revolving around technology and I found it – what would become Geekazine.

The first show was a little rough – using the music and intros to the last podcast because I still didn’t have a name for it. The podcast was simply called “The Show – with Jeffrey Powers”.

It wasn’t until November 7th that the official name “Geekazine Weekly Podcast” came about. Reading off tech news and geek happenings. I didn’t know what was going to happen with the show and where it would take me. But I am glad I jumped over to build my Geekazine brand.

My weekly process would include: Getting up and packing the laptop to head to the coffee shop. Eventually, it would become the local Panera Bread – their Wi-Fi would turn into a 30 minute use at 11:30 AM. It kept me on task to get the show notes set up. It also got me out of the house to focus on the tech news of the week.

The show got a major face-lift in June 2011. I wanted to bring a new direction – especially since I was going all-in on video. The studio got upgraded so you had something to watch while the talking head moved.

As I continued on I upgraded the intro, graphics and more. Even moved from the original intro music I created over 6 years ago.

Here we are at episode 300. A great milestone to head out on. For now.

A couple weeks ago, I started thinking about what shows are working and what are not. While Geek Smack! does a good job with unique viewers, it still is the lower of the watched shows. Further, expirable content gave this show a shelf life of maybe 2 weeks at best. Whereas other episodes were climbing in the 30 day mark, Geek Smack! would stay stagnant.

I have been going out to some major events this year. This caused some very big gaps in Geek Smack! which ultimately hurts an expirable content show. To also compete with other tech news shows such as Tech News Today and the Daily Tech News Show – which run 5 days a week – my weekly show of news and an editorial were definitely lacking.

The schedule for Geek Smack! took me 4 hours to pre-produce, 1 hour to record, and up to 8 hours to finish (2 hours on a good day). The reason why simply was the waiting game. Waiting for video to post – waiting to edit and repost to the masses – could take me up to the 10 PM hour before I was done. Sure, I could remove the live element from the show and make it easier, but that was not the direction I wanted to go.

My crazy schedule also affected other shows that do make some serious numbers and bring in more revenue. iPad365, for example, has been on a hiatus due to this. Day in Tech History also has been suffering – Sometimes I was getting to the show last minute, which ultimately hurts its direction.

Finally, Google Penguin has really affected podcasters’ websites. Doing any podcast with a series of links in the post gets downgraded no matter what you do. I have attempted everything – including a very text-heavy set of show notes. The end result is good posts that don’t go anywhere via discovery.

I talked with Jennifer about all this and tried to figure out a new direction. We assessed the shows and planned where I am going with Geekazine.

We decided its time for me to take a hiatus from this show. Not sure what type of hiatus, but I will definitely be taking the summer off from Geek Smack! I am hoping this will rejuvenate me to where I can possibly come back and really kick this into higher gear.

During the summer I will be focusing on the other parts of Geekazine – Special Events feed with more reviews and possibly interviews of technology – Day in Tech History with full rundowns of tech history – iPad365 with iPad apps for you to use – This Week in Google Glass with my co-host Luke Wallace. HowToRecordPodcasts.com where I will have time to write some great articles on how to podcast and the finalization of my first two e-books on podcasting.

I have 3 major events I’ll be covering during the summer and the Podcast Movement in August where I’ll be speaking.

I might even take some time to soak in the sun…. Yeah. Right.

I am already freaking out on this decision. How do I stop doing something that I have been working on for 6 1/2 years. But then some inspiration hit me via a post last night from a friend – Scott Monty. Apparently, Scott also made a life-changing decision and announced yesterday he left his position at Ford Motor Company.

If Scott can do it, so can I.

While I am not leaving the brand altogether, I am taking the main show out of commission. The video will be turned off, and – to keep the audio side from going completely idle – I will probably run a monthly “What’s happening” section until the time the Smack comes back.

I want to thank all my sponsors over the years. They have helped keep the lights on and I appreciate that. Thanks to all the people who watched and listened to the show. You truely kept me going all these years. Thanks to those who even emailed and called in. I’ll never forget the first email I got. The guy was very blunt and it shook up my show a bit.

Now, its time to smack this show to bed for a while. Not an easy thing to do – but a necessary one.

6th anniversary of the podcast is upon us! I started this show back in 2007 – named “The Show”. Fourth pair of Google Glass is going back to Google. This time, the camera died. I talk about it on TWIGG. My EmpireAvenue account is at 112 but more interesting is the numbers watching and listening increased. Crowdfund for CES is looking great – we’re planning T-shirts for backer levels. Getting closer to launching the new website to bring more validation to podcasts.

I’ve been trying out StreetJelly in the last week – a website where you can listen to musicians playing live. You can even tip them tokens. I spent about 10 hours over the weekend working on my acoustic show once again.

Last week Google announced people will be getting livestream ability to their YouTube account. I am not a big LiveStream fan on my podcast because its just another thing to go wrong. I decided to stream and record this episode. A couple glitches but overall not a bad job.

Did record episode #2 of This Week in Google Glass with new Co-Host Luk Wallace. Check out the news of Google Glass on this new show. My 10,000 step challenge has taken some new turns as Drumming and lawn mowing really help. I ran out of gas so I have a half-mown lawn. Will Finish later today.

Geek Smack: YouTube Streaming – Does it Change the Game?

As you can see (or maybe you can’t), I am trying YouTube streaming. This is a feature that people will get once they hit 1,000 subscribers, have a “Good Standing” approval and agree to the terms. I used to stream my podcasts all the time on service “uStream”. I’ve had this YouTube ability for a while (since I have 2,000 subscribers and opted into the partner program) but I normally don’t stream because its one more option that could cause failure.

However, I do see its enticement – Record once, monitize forever. If you need to make edits – YouTube has a process for that (which will most likely get better in the months to come). Therefore, this test of the Geek Smack! YouTube system has been re-initialized.

It makes me wonder how live streaming will change. Its not like we haven’t been able to do that already – uStream, Livestream and Justin.tv – the major players in livestreaming – have been around since 2007. Only problem for these three is they needed to have a solid pay model to cover costs. Ads were inserted without direction of the streamer – that is unless they paid a large monthly fee to get ads taken off or your own ads to be put up.

A lot has also changed since 2007. Codecs are better built and more stable, bandwidth is greater at home and on mobile devices and people are accepting the fact they can watch video on their computers, mobile devices and more.

With YouTube getting into this game, it can really make a uStream, Justin.tv or Livestream re-evaluate their models. After all, they don’t have the #1 video search engine behind their systems. They also don’t have the power of a $800 / share giant like Google powering them.

There can also be downfalls to YouTube livestreaming. Congestion is a big concern. If your video freezes, you can’t do much to fix. My biggest concern is I overtax my recording/streaming machine and the whole thing falls apart. If it does, I might have to record all over again – then find a way to split the duties with another computer.

We are going toward more video on demand models for entertainment. YouTube gets it. TBS/TNT gets it. HBO Go gets it. Its now a question if they can sustain it. Otherwise we might see YouTube Live getting closed down like Google Checkout is.

Geek Smack: Geek Smack Year 5

Back in 2007, I started a new podcast that was to focus on Tech. Next week, the flagship podcast will enter into it’s 5th season. The first episode was recorded October 7th, 2007.

The show has seen it’s changes – from audio to video, from “The Show” to “Geekazine Podcast” to “Geek Smack!”. 237 episodes later, I am continuing to give you the show in audio and video formats.

I’m not stopping. At least, not yet. There is still a few questions on how to make the show more popular. I am always looking for ideas and people to help with those ideas.

Thanks to everyone that has been with Geekazine podcasts since 2007. Thanks to everyone that has jumped on along the way. I hope this show will go another 5 years.

Geek Smack: Yahoo! Drama Continues – Scott Thompson Steps Down.

So Yahoo! is looking for another CEO. It’s another disappointment for the online search giant, as they hold on to their former glory. Scott Thompson stepped down because of questions about his resume. But it does ask the question – who doesn’t fudge their resumes a bit to get a job?

I know I’ve padded my resume a bit to show my experience. But a CEO position is a bit different than an IT job, I suppose. Still, if he was doing the job, who really cares? So that brings the question: Did Scott Thompson do the job? It looked like he was on the right direction.

He had to make some hard choices, and did them. Yet, I am not behind the scenes, so I don’t know what happened. As Thompson stepped down, he brought a bombshell with him: He has cancer. Thyroid cancer, to be exact. But how do we know if he’s telling the truth now? After all, he did fudge his resume…

Geek Smack: Can Hulu Become a Cable Walled Service?

This week, reports of Hulu possibly changing their TOS surfaced. The service was looking at requiring a cable subscription be tied to your Hulu account for you to see certain content. If this happens, there may be a major uproar, and possible loss for the online viewing service. It might be a setback for cable cutters, too. Also, what would this mean to HuluPlus?

Now keep in mind, this would most likely NOT affect all of Hulu. ABC, NBC and FOX would most likely be content you could watch the next day. It’s the shows like Comedy Central’s Daily Show with Jon Stewart, SyFy’s Eureka and Tosh.0, along with other cable premium content.

It would actually make sense – If you have the show in your cable line-up, you would get the show on Hulu. That could poise Hulu to take over the OnDemand section on your cable box. Hulu, in return, might just get more shows to offer, like Pawn Stars and Storage Wars. American Chopper, American Pickers, and American Restoration. Dr. Drew and Workaholics.

I would actually watch the Hulu version over my cable. It would come in high-definition, as opposed to SD, which I only have cable because it didn’t cost any more than the internet connection I already have.

Now Hulu says they have been looking at this idea for a couple years now. They also say it might not happen. However, if cable channels start to pressure Hulu, you may see this come to reality. There would still be a free part of Hulu, but only if you want to watch the new episode of the Simpsons on PC 4 weeks later…

Geek Smack: What will happen to Instagram?

Yesterday, we learned that Facebook purchased Instagram for $1 billion. They also said Instagram will will continue to work independently. This is something I have been expecting ever since Instagram started. But is it good or bad for this company?

Lots of negative comments to users that don’t seem to like Facebook. Alas, this morning, we learned that over 5 million downloads happened in the last 24 hours. So unless more than 5 million have moved their pictures and discontinued use, I would say this purchase is a good idea.

I have had Instagram on my phone since it’s Beta. It was a fun app – for a while. But the reality is: I needed something to post to more than Twitter and Facebook. Since I used Tweetdeck anyway, I just continued to do it that way.

I really didn’t care if the picture looked like something from my childhood. I have hundreds of those pictures over at my parents house.

Nowadays, the convenience factor doesn’t come into play. There is no service that posts to Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Pinterest. I wish there were.

Maybe that is what Instagram should focus on. They are going to be an independent company from Facebook. So why not?

Geek Smack: Is Apple Stock Heading to the Heavens, or Heading for a Crash?

$1000 a share. That is what some analysts are seeing in Applestock. It is looking like Apple could also poise to become the first company to hit $1 Trillion in revenue. An amazing feat, and they have their fanboys to thank for that.

I do have to admit, my household has more Apple products than ever before. A Macbook to the left of me, an iPad in my bag, and an iPhone on the table. While I still have PCs, and my Macbook lives in a Windows world 90% of the time, I am still amazed how much I drank the proverbial Kool-Aid.

Some people are heralding CEO Tim Cook for continuing the trend that Steve Jobs started. I said it before – Jobs was the Pirate, now Cook’s job is to solidify the business so it leads the pack. Many issues arose after Jobs untimely departure. Foxconn’s staffing issues, the President indirectly calling out Apple for taking jobs overseas.

With any other CEO, that could have taken down the company. Cook is like an experienced ship captain, sailing effortlessly through the storm. Apple rides high after pioneering the MP3 music player, smartphone and (technically) the tablet. Think about it – how many people said in 2010 they wouldn’t own a tablet? I was one of them. All during this time, Apple stock rose. Ten years ago, it only would have cost you $12.37 a share to be a part of Apple.

This time last year, AAPL was at $238 a share. Now, it trades at $628, and grows at least $25-50 a share when a new product rolls out. If you had invested 1,000 shares last year, you saw a 3 time return. And according to the Analysts, it’s not done yet. If shares continue like this, you could see $1800 a share by next year (but more likely around $1200)! Is this a good thing?

Apple sits on top of a tall heap. It looks stable, and feels stable, but if this pile is to ever tumble, billionaires could become penniless within days. It may not happen. But I still wish I would have invested in Apple when I had the chance over 10 years ago…

Geek Smack NanoSIM Cards

Apple wants your SIM card. Nokia does too. Who will win?

You might basically know what it is – If you have a phone, you have a SIM card. This was the card that allowed your information to move from one phone to the next. Only problem was, it was always “Upgraded” before you could put it into another phone.

I think in all the phones I had, there was only one time where I could move the SIM card from one to the other (and I went from one Nokia phone to another).

SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module, and was first introduced in 1991 by Giesecke & Devrient,a german company that provides security solutions to bank notes, smart cards, and more. It’s designed to keep your personal information just that, but sometimes there was room to put on a few SMS messages and phone numbers.

The official “Name” of the new SIM is called 4FF UICC. Both Apple, and Nokia filed for this standard. Apple’s standard looks like today’s SIM card with jagged edges. Nokia has more of an SD card feel to their SIM – which may cause for some patent issues.

Why does this matter to you? Well, like I said, if you have a cell phone, you have a SIM card. If you Whoever gets the standard, will get a small amount of the cost for the phone. For Apple, it’s more cash for their pocket. For Nokia, it might be the one thing that keeps them from going bankrupt.

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: SXSW Preview

Today, we look at the big show – South by SouthWest, aka SXSW is starting this Friday the 9th, and goes to the 18th. SXSW Interactive, or SXSWi, for the tech crowd, SXSW Film and SXSW Music.

This will be my first SXSW show, and I am pumped to see what is going to happen. I still don’t have a ticket, but I hear there is a lot to do outside SXSW. Nonetheless, I am going to soak up as much SXSW as I can.

Still, I plan for if I was going in there. SXSW has a lot of sessions, but I am hoping to get into the expo hall and talk with a lot of startups. Learn about the new products and gadgets coming out.

Some sessions I hope to get into include Richard Garriot’s Continuing Space Mission, How to Read the World by Baratunde Thurston, Frank Abagnale’s Catch Me if you Can, A Carlin Home Companion with Kelly Carlin, Jeffrey Tambor’s Acting Workshop, Jason Fall’s Social Media Comes of Age without the Help of Porn, Beer and Bots with Dean Kamen and Maywa Denki, and a bunch more sessions.

Some of the parties in the evening include TechKaraoke, Mashable SXSW, FormSpring, GeekyBeach party and more. I am also going to attend my friend Wesley’s company – SnoBall party. Of course, I will be bringing the video camera and trying to get as much footage as possible.

Geek Smack! 217: Leap Year Edition – Apple Going in a New Direction?

I took a week off because of health issues and also needed to get the CES videos out. The last 48 hours I unplugged myself as best I could just to try and get assemblence. Lots of things are bleak right now as I am waiting for contracts to pay me. Did go to the Milwaukee Auto Show and joined the Milwaukee Social Media Club learn a little bit more about Ford and their Social Media practices. Also, thanks to Coke for sending some original prints because of a hangout at the Coke archives I attended two weeks ago. Also talk about plans for SXSW and what’s going on with me and BlogWorld

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Could Siri Break out of Apple? What other Software Could Break Free?

Today, we found out that Siri, the voice assistant of Apple iPhone 4S – will be incorporated into Mercedes Benz vehicles. They are doing it to make hands-free voice assistance easier. It also sets a new model for Apple – going in-market outside of a self-controlled Apple environment.

Back in 1998, Apple cancelled all of their 3rd party contracts so they could control the hardware and software environment. That has been like that ever since (with the exceptions of iTunes, Quicktime and Safari, which have Windows solutions). But with Mercedes Benz getting the Siri software, this starts to ask a question – Is Apple ready to concede the proprietary hardware – software solution?

First, let’s look at Siri, and where it could go. You might not see Siri on an XBox anytime soon, but why not a PlayStation or Wii? Siri is in Benz right now, but could they also find the software in Ford, Chevy, Honda, and more? What about your refrigerator or washing machine?

We know that Apple is turning a new corner with CEO Tim Cook – doing things that Steve Jobs would have cringed at. Would Tim break the cardinal rules of Jobs and let the dogs run wild?

If Apple was to break their walled hardware-software garden and put other software on competing devices, people would start getting used to the environment, and possibly migrate over. Now I’m not talking about having Psystar start back up and making Hackintosh computers. But what if Garage Band or Final Cut Pro was available for a Linux based computer? Heck, what if you could get an Apple app store for Windows?

It would change the computer topagraphic immensely.

Then again, this might be a one-time occurrance. Never to repeat again. But wouldn’t it be cool?

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: MySpace is Back!

MySpace is going back to their roots. It’s about time.

For most of you, MySpace was a word that died around 2007 when you switched to Facebook. Rupert Murdoch’s version of MySpace turned out to become “Not MySpace”. It also became the joke of the internet – To the point that Murdoch recanted Social Media.

But in the last couple years, MySpace did something that you might not have seen, but a lot of bands have. They went back to their roots. Of course, MySpace was first a musician hosting site, then added fans. Now, they focus on the musicians and bands.

When Justin Timberlake bought it in June 29th, 2011, we thought he was just taking from his role from “The Social Network” and do what Sean Parker did with Napster. Instead, he brought music to the forefront.

Now, with focus on MySpaceTV, MySpace could become the MTV of the internet. Their new music player brought back 1 million people in 24 hours.

This also brings a question of how the record companies will see MySpace in the upcoming months. Because MySpace can glaum off those thousands of artists that don’t have record deals. In fact, Who is to say that Timberlake doesn’t capitalize on that with his own record label (MySpace Records).

We’ll see how MySpace evolves. If done right, you will be coming to that social network once again.

I have to admit: I have been seriously thinking of getting rid of my Netflix account. Last week, Starz ended their agreement with Netflix, and Netflix hasn’t updated their online streaming in 3 weeks. How many old TV series can we endure?

I did watch some 2 1/2 star B-movie that I enjoyed three to four nights ago. But I have found I am not going to Netflix as much as I have.

Enter in Redbox and Verizon. Now, I am not keen on heading to the store to drop off a movie 24 hours later, but the prices are a lot better than Amazon. With Verizon adding streaming in the second half of 2012, you could see Redbox compete hard with these online services.

Of course, in order to do so, Redbox will have to get on the Roku, Boxee, XBox360, PS3 and embed in many different TV’s and Blu-Ray players.

What about the DVD rental? Would you choose to get yours in the mail, or drive to the Kiosk to drop off? Mail has convenience whereas Kiosks means you might get that next movie right now. I hope they also initiate a “reserve” option. I can reserve a movie in a queue, then have 20 minutes to go get it from the Kiosk I reserved it from.

We’ll see how this plays out. Maybe Netflix should start thinking about Kiosks themselves?

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: In the Last 3 Weeks…

This last few weeks have been full of news. We saw Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang finally get it and step down. We saw MegaUpload MegaDown. We saw Google Empire get organized with a new privacy policy. We saw a State of the Union that talked about jobs. So what do we talk about?

I say, let’s talk about it all.

First Yahoo – Jerry, this should have happened years ago. MegaUploads – When you go with a questionable company, you get a questionable product. Let’s hope you didn’t put something up there you need and made backups.

Google – It’s nice to have one policy, instead of a series of documents. We’ll have to see if it adversely affects Google.

Finally, the State of the Union. I refer to the line from the movie “Con Air” – Define Irony: A President that says we should penalize a company for taking Jobs overseas, but highlights a company that publicly denounced the workers in the US. If you didn’t notice, the SOTU bumped Apple’s stock up $25 /share.

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Consumer Electronics Show (CES) preview

Every time this year I join Todd Cochrane and Andy McCaskey in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show. We put together many hours of video for you to watch, and with the live stream again this year, we expect to have the best CES coverage we can deliver.

We are joined by Netcast Studios, GeoCaching World and the guys at Plughitz. We have 3 sponsors this year.

CES will be the year of the Ultrabook – The thin notebook using Intel’s soon to be released Ivy-bridge processor. If there is a good amount of meat on that bone, I might be picking up one of those machines.

Also, expect mobile to be very big. With Android pushing smart devices to the masses, tons of companies will be showing off interesting product.

CES is sold out in vendor booths, and the Venetian is the new Sands (which held a part of CES). We expect a lot this year, so get ready for an awesome CES!

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: GoDaddy’s Flip Flop with SOPA

If you have been hearing the news, there is a thing called Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which seems to step all over people’s rights. While we need to combat piracy, and while SOPA does have some good points to it, the act is far from being something less than a dictatorship.

GoDaddy announced they backed SOPA, along with over 390 other companies. Since then, a lot of those companies backed down, but GoDaddy has been getting the most flack. They lost a lot of domains during a 48 hour period.

I use GoDaddy. Switching for me means a $500 price tag, and I don’t have that kind of cash to throw around like that. Besides, I think they’ve made amends, and their tools saved my rear on Saturday when I messed up.

AT&T decided to take back their $39 billion purchase deal on T-Mobile. It doesn’t mean they wont try again later – that is, if T-Mobile can stay stable.

There have been reports out there that say gaming sales are down. Not to say that gaming is dead, but Microsoft does seem to have plans. A new update launched earlier today gave XBox and Update for Gesture, Voice. Now, you can play a game without a controller, or sort through your media with a comment or wave of the hand.

And it doesn’t stop there – Verizon FIOS is on-board. What would happen if your next XBox had a coaxial cable attached? CES Innovation Honoree Wi3 has a way to attach Ethernet connectors to your coax cable. Day by day, we are planning more for Internet based TV.

So there may now be a time where you want to watch a movie, but the kids want to play a game. What do you do? Buy another XBox 360? Flip a coin to see who wins?

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Black Friday, Cyber Monday shows we might also #OccupySales

Well, we survived another mad dash shopping weekend. With the exception of the person that pepper sprayed for an XBox 360, and the local issues in Wisconsin with the recall efforts of our Governor. Otherwise, it’s been reported that Black Friday was a huge success. Even Apple, who hasn’t participated in the event in the past, hit 4x better sales than years past.

It makes you wonder – all these people sitting outside Wall Street for a reason? How can we say “Occupy” whatever, when we shovel into stores and buy, buy, buy? It’s like if a peasant in mid-evil times were to say “We doth have no food on thine table for thy family”, then pull out and start eating a turkey leg…

By definition, I am one of the 99%. But I don’t use that as an excuse. Yes, I get worried on bills and where my next meal will come from. I am also working on new plans to expand. That is why I started iPad365. That is why I am talking to financial experts and working new deals.

I am glad for shop owners who saw record sales. Black Friday weekend got a 24% boost and Cyber Monday also saw 20% increase in sales. But where does that leave us when it comes to saying we are poor? Or did the stores just provide the right discounts to where we could afford to buy the stuff?

Spotify is the new music service that came over to the US a couple months ago. They have recieved a good amount of attention, so why not strike when the iron is hot. They are announcing a “New Direction” for Spotify on November 30th. What would it be? Some people like Charlie Hoover believe a variant of iTunes Match, yet they don’t have a mobile device for it.

I will go out on a limb to say that it could be an acquisition by Facebook. It would line up pretty good with the Facebook Phone: aka Buffy, which would give them advantage to 800 million users. As long as the phone is under $100, it would be a very powerful trio.

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Is an iPad Price Cut in the Future?

According to Goldman Sachs, they believe the iPad will soon cut their prices. The Kindle Fire and nook color are coming out in the next couple days, at $199 and $250, there is a lot of concern these tablets will finally dig into market share of the iconic tablet.

So the real question is: Will Apple cut the price of iPad? Will they just offer a first generation iPad for a discount price?

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: What is Yahoo! Thinking

It’s more and more prevalent that Yahoo! doesn’t know what direction to go. With the lack of CEO, that (by some strange default) makes Jerry Yang the head of a company he was forced to step down from. Yahoo! has been going like “Business Usual”, trying to hide the ship that is sinking.

USA Today reports Daniel Loeb, a stockholder (5.2%) is not happy. He also claims some conflict of interests because several buyout firms are trying to get a controlling stake. If they succeed, people like Loeb could be in for a long waste of time and no chance to regain profits lost from the 2008 buyout debacle.

Yahoo! needs to take some advice: Just sell it, already!

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Microsoft and Android

It’s not unusual that a phone has some technology in it that is owned by another company. Sometimes you barter for trade – you own a patent, they own a patent and it’s a wash. However, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay a few royalties to another company.

That is the case with Microsoft patents and Android. Now, in some cases, a couple dollars here per phone goes to one patent holder, a couple dollars there goes to another. It’s not unusual in building computers. However, in the building of an Android phone, Goldman Sachs estimated Microsoft getting $444 million for Android phones next year.

Makes you wish you got in the patent game, doesn’t it?

In the end, the question arises: Does it make the phone worth it to you? Do those little additions help you build your business? For me – the answer is yes. It’s not the first time a company has profited from another, and it certainly won’t be the last.

You may not like it, but that’s not going to make it go away.
