Canon 80D Camera with headphone jack

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSCanon EOS cameras are great for not only capturing quality photos, but also for creating video for your YouTube channel, or other video projects. At NAB, I got to see one of the latest versions – the Canon 80d Camera. With a wide-area, 45-point, all cross-type AF system, this camera will work in lower light with a luminance performance to EV-3. The camera has a 24.2 Megapixels CMOS sensor to create high-resolution images. The 80D camera will also work well as a video camera. Fast autofocus, built-in Wi-Fi, NFC, and 1080p 60fps MP4 video will allow for great video shots. The base unit comes with an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 Stabilized USM lens. An optional Røde microphone can be added for capturing video. But the 80D also includes something videographers have been asking for – a headphone jack to monitor audio capture. Canon...

ChromaKey using ReflecMedia light, backdrop

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSMost of us that use Chromakey have painted a wall green or blue. But what if you didn’t have to paint a wall? What if you could put down a grey backdrop, then, with a light, create the chromakey so you can wear that green shirt or blue pants? ReflecMedia has a great solution for your chromakey need. Using a specialized backdrop and a ring-style light around the camera, the backdrop turns the color of the light. A simple system starts at $1900.

Switcher Studio Uses Your Phone for Facebook Live Cameras

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThis is not a new idea, but it is a newer innovation. Systems have tried to incorporate mobile video in their production switchers, but there has normally been a fail, especially when audio is involved. Switcher Studio has worked out that problem and turned their program to all mobile devices. I first saw this program at SXSW when a one-on-one interview was being conducted. Two phones, one iPad (for switching the video content). The phones would connect to the iPad via WiFi, then the iPad would not only swap out the video, but also add lower 3rds, graphics, and pre-recorded scenes. I grilled Switcher Studio on the latency issues. The biggest issue being lag from a phone to the audio track being supplied. I was assured that as long as audio came into the iPad via Lightning or headset, it will...

Duplicator 4K Makes 25 SD Card Copies at Once

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSImagine being at a conference or wedding with camera crews capturing the event. As you get ready to leave the event, you are given an SD card with the festivities inside for you to consume again and again. That is what the Blackmagic Design Duplicator 4K does. While at NAB I talked with Kendall with Blackmagic Designs on the Duplicator 4K. You can copy up to 25 cards per rack mount at a time. You can also daisy-chain the units together to record more for larger events. Each unit can take a SD card and fill it with the event you recorded in multiple formats up to Ultra HD at 2160p 60fps. Each video is encoded in H.265 for smaller file sizes but also 4K resolution. Weddings, sporting events, live concerts, conferences and more can benefit from the Duplicator 4K. It can...

Sony URXP03D Easily Connects Wired and Wireless Microphones

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIf you wanted to mic up a guest to an interview such as this one, you would need two wireless receivers to do it. Sony is now helping fix that with the UWP-D series wireless mics. The URXP03D is a receiver that not only can connect two wireless sources but also allows for two more inputs for many different operations. While at NAB 2016, I talked with Andy and learned about all the types of wireless they offer. The UWP-D series includes in-camera adapters and external adapters such as the URXP03D. This receiver is a 4-input, 2 output device. This means you can connect 2 wireless microphones – lavaliere or handheld – and either one or two microphones through the Mic Input (stereo connection). This will give you ability to mic the room and the speakers, then adjust for maximum performance. The...

NewTek Open Source NDI Standard for Video Production

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSIn a video production environment, spreading out tasks between computers can help in many different ways. From producing the video for public consumption to creating archive and even monitoring systems. Network Device Interface (NDI) is a standard that can bridge devices together – and you don’t even have to own a Tricaster. While at NAB, I talked with Phillip Nelson of NewTek about this open standard. NDI was announced back in 2015 to communicate with devices over Gigabit Ethernet. A standard that almost all corporate and video production buildings (even home studios) have. The idea is to have one computer send video or other items over to the production machine without having to convert or render. The end result is a reduction in production workflow. Many different programs have already adopted NDI into their systems. You don’t even need NewTek products...

Saramonic Camera Audio Mixers and Microphones

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSA couple months ago I purchased the Saramonic Smart Mixer for my phone and have been happy with the results for covering live shows. While at NAB I stopped by the Saramonic booth to find out what other great products they have for my video and audio production on the go. Turns out Saramonic has a lot of great audio solutions – wired and wireless. I started with the SmartMixer 2 channel Audio Mixer Kit for iOS or Android. As I was recording via the device, you can hear how this cuts out background noise to get the interview. I looked at a very interesting microphone for GoPro cameras for $35. They also have lavaliere microphones if you do vlogging or simple on-camera spots. I then went over the large array of DSLR Camera Microphone Pre-Amps, such as the SR-AX101. You can...

Nokia Ozo Camera Broadcasts Live 360 Video

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSCapturing 360 video got a whole lot powerful with the Nokia Ozo 360 spherical video and 360×360 surround sound. Everything from creating movies to live broadcasts can now be captured and streamed for all to see instantly. I got a chance to talk with Guido Voltolina, Head of Presence Capture at Nokia to learn more about this powerful camera. While it looks like some alien pod getting ready to decend on the earth, the Ozo is a 360 camera that can be attached to a stand, drone, or other device to stream and record events. During NAB, Ozo was live streaming in 3 different spots around the convention center. Not only will the Ozo capture 360 video, the system contains “spatial audio mixing”. Tags are placed on the musicians so as they move, you can hear it in binaural audio. This...

DJI Osmo with Z-Axis Gimbal at NAB

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSDJI added to their new Osmo 4k stabilization gimbal with the Z-axis attachment. For an additional $129, you can get this for your Osmo. It adds the ability to reduce vertical shaking for a more stable video. I took the Osmo with Z-Axis for a run and the iPhone video was very solid. Using the joystick to move the camera around, the new Z-axis can keep you moving. It also allows for re-positioning so you can run the camera across the ground or way up high. Get the Osmo here. Z-Axis is $129.

HP Z1 G2 All-In-One Workstations for Powerful Editing

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhile at NAB 2015, I checked out the powerful Z desktops and the Z1 G2 All-in-one workstation. This is a 27-inch touchscreen all-in-one. Inside is an Intel – i3,i5, i7 or Xeon E3 processor – DDR3 non-ECC RAM at 1866 MHz, Intel or NVidia graphics and more. The HP Z1 G2 is easy to open to fix or replace parts. Simply slide it down, and open the top up from the latches in the front. The hydraulic arms keep the unit from crashing down. Green tabs show you where you unlock-and-pull to take out hard drives, memory, fans, and more. Other features include an internal USB for wireless mice or any special dongles that need to be locked up. DPA d:fine headset microphones

DPA d:fine Headset Microphones – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI am always looking for a good microphone to create content with. Recently I ditched the big microphone for most of my video content with a headset mic. I might just be switching again as I checked out the DPA Microphones d:fine series. The d:fine headsets have one big advantage over some of the others on the market – the earpiece isn’t a solid piece of metal. In fact, the DPA d:fine has an interesting curly-q design (I was calling a pig tail). The flexible hook allows to go over anybody’s ear comfortably. Get DPA d:fine microphones at Amazon You can get the d:fine series in 4088 directional or 4066 omnidirectional capsules. The boom arm is completely adjustable and removeable from the ear mount and cable. What this does is allows you to easily adjust the boom (even move the boom...

One Man Crew Camera Slider with Tablet Control – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSWhen I set up my home studio I tried to find ways to make my cameras work better for me. I thought a slider would be a fun addition – at the time there were no tablets and anything remote controlled would cost an arm and a leg. When I saw Redrock Micro’s One Man Crew, I knew I found something I could use at a decent price. Keep in mind the slider is still $1,495. If you can afford one it will add movement via the camera so you are not in the same static talking head pattern. Even the slightest movement can really help in the production and storytelling. Get the One Man Crew at B&H Photo This device also allows you to set up some great time-lapses. Set the slider to the slowest movement and hit the record...

Sony HandyCam HXR-NX30u Production Camera – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI use the pro-sumer version of the Sony Handycam HXRNX30u in getting interviews for Geekazine. When I heard there was a broadcast level version, I was intrigued. Adding sound options and more made this the next camera on my list. The Sony Handcam HXR series came out in 2011. Their current version – the HXR-NX30u – brings high definition in a small footprint. Add the Optical SteadyShot image stabilization technology and you can be holding this in your hand and still get a pretty stable shot. This is because the camera eye moves to keep the shake from happening. Get the Sony HXR-NX30u at B&H For example, I have done some time-lapses in Las Vegas with an older camera. Whether you are in a building or on a bridge you know that after watching the footage there is some shaking or swaying that...

Digital Jukebox Button Broadcaster for Organizing Audio – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSRadio programs use cart software to keep audio files organized. A software solution allows for more than just what a cart can hold and everything at a person’s fingertips. Even with podcasting some people use cart software to organize and keep clips at hand. Digital Jukebox is cart software that does a lot more. I got to talk with Joe over how Button Broadcaster works. Basically, the software allows you to put audio files in a 49 square area. You can organize those from intro music to quick quotes, sound effects, and more. On top is another series of buttons which bring up another set of buttons to use. On the left is the list. Items that you have queued up to play. They can be single items or category list items. Therefore you can play 3 songs and come in to...

Zoom H6 Handy High Resolution Audio Recording Device – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSI got to see some great recording devices for getting that interview or keynote recorded. One in particular – the Zoom H6 Handy Recorder – is a multi-function recorder that I could use to mic a 6 person interview, a room for an event, a 2-3 person band, and more. The H6 is designed for everyone – musicians to journalists – videographers to sound professionals that don’t want to carry the whole studio with them. The H6 has multiple attachments along with the 4 XLR/TRS inputs. The Zoom H6 can track 6 channels for many different options. At the top is an attachment for a XY microphone, boom mic (with dead cat) or a mid/size capsule for up-close interviews. The unit is fairly small for what it can do. Weighing in at less than 10 ounces you will be able to...

The a7scan adapt to become a full cinematic movie camera. What else do you need? The s stands for sensitivity. It supports an ISO range of 50 to 409,600. A down-scaled 4k (2,840×2,160) is achieved through this 12.2 megapixel sensor. You won’t be able to record 4K video directly on the camera but you will be able to make some great video in full 1080p with a XAVC S-format class 10 video card. And it’s still a camera, too. The camera can shoot at 5 fps. with shutter speeds up to 1/8000. The 35mm CMOS sensor can give you some great...

LiveU Streaming Packs LU400, LU500, Smart Grip Stick – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSVideo streaming is a great way to get a show out to the public right now. LiveU has been giving us ways to stream video to a streaming service or back to the station for live coverage. Using packs that have multiple wireless endpoints working in tandem, if one carrier cannot send the signal another one can help out. I talked with Avi Cohen, COO of LiveU about the newest versions of streaming devices. Avi showed us the LU500, a smaller backpack solution that has 6-8 4G cards inside to get the action. The LU500 is only 2.2 lbs and with the backpack allows for a cameraperson to be on the go. The LU500 battery will run for around 3 hours – depending on how you use the pack. You can connect a camera, computer, or used the quick editing feature inside...

HP Z27x DreamColor Monitor for 4K Video – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSMovies such as Frozen, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, and upcoming Shrek – the Final Chapter all have either used or will be using this technology to make the color pop and the movies shine. All because of a computer monitor. I met up with Dan Bennet this year at NAB 2014. Dan knows his stuff when it comes with high-quality HP computers – like the Z1 G2 – and also HP’s monitors in the HP DreamColor Z27x and Z24x. We focused mainly on the Z27x because of everything it had to offer. The HP DreamColor Z27x features a 4k input support screen, 10 bit color, and an integrated calibration engine to color correct the screen when needed. Dan showed me two calibration devices that could be used and could be calibrated to multiple color formats....

Vocalbooth – Portable Soundproof Rooms – NAB 2014

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | RSSThere are many times I wish I had one of these. Not just for podcasting but for playing my drums or rocking out on my guitar. I stopped by Vocalbooth to learn more about sound booth technology. Its more than just putting up some eggshell foam into a room. I talked with Guy from Vocalbooth to learn more about these rooms you can put inside a room. The booth is made by the company where they put attention to detail. For instance: the door is probably the heaviest piece in the system but it also is the place where sound can escape or come in. During the interview I step out and in to show the difference. If the door was shut – you would definitely notice the sound difference. Vocalbooth makes rooms for everyone – including correctional facilities. They become...
